Chapter 58: Making Plans part 1

Aric took what Pentharis said to heart. If he wanted to get the best out of everyone, he would need to know their skills deeper. He made a mental note to do that, though now was not the time for him to be focused on that.

"I understand what you are saying. I’ll do my best," Aric replied. "Now come with me, we have something very crucial to discuss. Tell the others to come as well, to the main house," Aric said and left Pentharis.

He found Ariel and Elisa and asked them to come to the main house as well. If they were going into battle, they needed a proper plan to ensure that they didn’t lose.

Aric didn’t have the time to meet Ron to ask him to make a large table, so he decided he would buy one. He walked into the empty house and went straight to the dining area.

He used 3000 gold to purchase a large table and chairs that would take all the spirits, the three goblins, Ariel, and Elisa.

The table was a beautiful plain table, with a very dark brown wood color. It had been polished until it shined, so smooth that his finger slid over the top.

The chairs were made of the same material, having no particularly special design. He set the table up and laid the chairs, then he sat down and waited.

After a while, the door of the house swung open, and in front was Pentharis, who, of course, had to use a kick to open the door.

"That door took a long time for the goblins to make. Why would you kick it like that?" Unara, who was behind him, asked.

"If it broke after such a small kick, then maybe the goblins need to do better," Pentharis snapped back.

Immediately, it turned into another banter as they walked to the table. They all took their seats while still throwing insults.

Aric overlooked their madness and waited for the others to come. Soon, the representatives of the goblins—Ron, Lucas, and Gunam—came, along with Ariel and Elisa.

They took a seat at the table while watching the spirits go at it. Aric gave them a few more seconds to get it out of their system and then knocked his hand on the table.

The sound pulled their attention and stopped them from talking.

"You guys have argued enough. It’s time for some pressing discussions. I’m sure you felt the meeting was only called for the battle that we will face, but that’s not the only issue here.

The first issue is the issue of food. I have been the one providing that, but with the growing size of this community, I won’t be able to keep up.

I already have a good solution to start with if you’ll listen to me," Aric said. He looked at Ariel and Elisa. "I want to believe that the both of you are the only two capable of reading here?" he asked.

Ariel and Elisa were not expecting the question. They looked around, and all eyes were on them.

"I learned how to long ago—the general language, the ones specific to elves as well," Ariel responded.

"I also learned how to read as well. As a noble, it was a must," Elisa responded.

"I thought as much," Aric said. "The rest of you only have the ability to speak the general language due to evolution, which I have to say is already a cheat. But if you saw what you speak written down, you wouldn’t know," Aric said.

"No need to be harsh," Pentharis said.

"Swallow your feelings," Aric shot back.

’Even I shouldn’t know to read, but in my memories, I did learn how to read. It was one of the few things I was allowed to do from small—though mostly self-taught and watching others,’ Aric thought, pulling the memories of his predecessor.

"Now, the reason I am asking this is simple. Everyone at this table is going to need to know how to read going forward," Aric said. He dramatically made a large book with a hard cover appear and slammed it on the table.

"Is... is that a book?" Elisa asked in shock. She had never seen paper so white and thin.

"It is, but not just any book—a full encyclopedia of farming. Everything that you could possibly want to know about growing your own food.

It also has modified parts to teach what to do if someone amongst you has plant magic and can increase the growth of your plants by a very huge margin.

In this case, I am the one capable of that, so with the help of this book, we will be able to run a proper farm. For now, the only two people that will have access to all this knowledge will be Elisa and Ariel," Aric said, and immediately, unsatisfied grumbles exploded around the table.

While Ariel and Elisa had smiles all over their faces, genuinely happy that they got the book, Aric was quite shocked to see this. The fact that they were so eager to read, and even those that couldn’t read wanted to read—they all wanted to learn new things. f(r)eew(e)bnovel.(c)o(m)

If humans had this same attitude in his former world, a lot of things would be different. He decided to act as if he understood their grumbles and plight to read.

"I understand that you all want to have access to new knowledge and know more, but for now, you can’t. So here is my promise and offer: After the battle, Ariel and Elisa will help me teach you all the basics of reading.

I don’t know how long it will take you all to learn it, but with consistency, it will come," Aric said.

"No, it shouldn’t take too long. If they practice the basics a bit, they should awaken a reading-related skill that will set them up," Ariel said.

"Shit, I forgot this world had things like skills," Aric mumbled. He wondered how they knew they got a skill. They weren’t like him, right? They couldn’t see a floating screen, right?
