Chapter 107: Crimson eyes

Fey reached the bottom of the mountain, reaching a valley of rocks and white sand. There was nothing to see for miles and miles.

She looked back at Elan and the three prodigies, her eyes went sharp as she spoke, "Be careful, this area is filled with earth snakes. They live in large groups, so if we see one, that means there are more of them," she spoke.

"Earth snakes are not worth worrying about, you are the saintess after all," Ella said.

"Your first mistake would be underestimating even the most common monsters," Elan said.

"The earth snakes live here. This is their home, and they know this terrain more than anyone else. They have the advantage," Fey added.

They started walking through the mountain paths, the scorching sun burned their skin harshly.

They traveled quietly without speaking, their surroundings ghost quiet, until suddenly, the ground under their feet started cracking and breaking.

They all reacted to it and got out of the way in an instant. The ground collapsed under them, and a large hole opened in the ground.

They all came close to look into the hole, but suddenly, a massive brown snake with two horns blasted out of the ground.

Its brown scales reflected the light of the sun as it rose high into the sky. It was over thirty feet long and a few feet wide, big enough to easily swallow a full human.

They all moved back immediately. Fey and Elan pulled out their swords at the same time. "Stay back!" they yelled to the kids, and charged in.

Their speed was instant, their feet barely touched the ground before they already got to the snake. The snake recognized the threats and tried to move, but they were too fast.

Both of their blades dug into the scales of the earth snake. They cleanly decapitated it and killed the snake. They landed on the ground after killing it, but they didn’t drop their guard, because they knew when there was one, there would be more.

And just as they thought, more earth snakes blasted out of the ground from all directions. They were a total of four.

"I’ll take two," Elan said and moved. His feet kicked the ground and his body vanished. When he reappeared, he was already above the snake, his blade in the motion of slashing.

In one clean slate, he removed the head of the snake, and then stepped on the sword, using it to jump off into the air. Then he kicked the air and moved through it like a bullet.

His blade stretched out again. The snake opened its mouth to attack, but Elan was faster. He slashed and fired a sword arc. The invisible force traveled through the air and slashed the mouth of the snake.

The head of the snake jerked back, its blood spilling in all directions. Elan didn’t stop there. He landed on the ground and leaped into the air again, going for an overhead slash and killing the snake.

Fey charged at the middle of both snakes. The snakes saw her coming and both attacked at the same time, their mouths slamming into the ground at the same time, but she vanished.

She appeared above both of them, and vanished again. Explosive slash sounds filled the air, dust rose and wind blew in all directions, scattering debris and dirt.

When the dust settled, the butchered bodies of the two snakes lay on the ground. She landed on the ground gracefully, with no speck of dirt on her.

"We have to move now. More will come," she said.

They started running through the mountains, but the earth snakes were still coming. They blasted out of the ground in large numbers, a whole horde of them, chasing after the group.

While the others ran, Fey turned around. She pulled her blade, her hands moving at an impossible speed. In an instant, she fired out several sword arcs.

Each one killed an earth snake, gutting them into two. She stayed put as she moved, her movements were flawless.

Elan and the other three stood watching this. The three were amazed by this—so this was the power of the saintess?

In a few seconds, the bodies of the ground snakes littered the floor. Fey drew a deep breath and calmed herself down. She turned, looking at the awestruck group and Elan.

"That should be all for now. Even if they have more, I doubt they’ll make it here in time," she said. She sheathed her sword and walked up to them.

"You just had to show off," Elan said.

"I didn’t want to. Fighting all of them would expend a lot of energy, but so would running from them, so I decided to take them out," she said and walked past him. He bit into his lower lip as he heard her words.

They continued their path through the mountains without any more worries—or so they thought—as deep within the darkest parts of the Dead Lands, two crimson eyes opened.

Its loud hiss caused the earth to shake. It wriggled its body through the ground, and as it moved, the ground trembled.

It traveled fast, heading in the direction of the saintess.

Fey, on the other hand, was oblivious to this lurking danger.

"Lady Fey, is the whole Dead Lands as dangerous as this?" Ella asked.

"We stay on the outskirts of the Dead Lands. We are far away from what you would consider true danger. The Dead Lands are the most dangerous place on the continent.

The deeper you go, the less your chances of survival are. It was this danger that made the elites build their temple here.

Because with the temple here, we could observe the Dead Lands and also have a good enough place to train new elites.

I am sure that over your training, you have been taken to controlled environments to fight monsters, but along the line, you’ll fight even more dangerous ones," she explained to Ella in detail.
