Chapter 106: Doesn’t add up
Aric opened his eyes, the darkness that had surrounded him vanished, and now all that was around him was the soft glow of the morning, the fresh smell of flowers and warm tea.
He stood in a small garden in the middle of the emotional void. Somehow, only the garden had light, and the outside was completely dark.
At the center of the garden was a pearl white marble table. It shined beautifully under the light. Two chairs were set at either side of the table, and a figure sat on one.
Dressed in a beautiful black gown and a veil covering half of her face, she sipped tea from the small teacup, her pinky finger extended to show elegance.
She took one sip of the tea and paused as if she was savoring the flavor for longer.
"Mortals have really come a long way since the beginning, capable of creating complex mixtures of liquid to soothe the throat and soul of a being.
It is one of the many fascinating things that I love about mortals," she said and slowly placed the cup down.
"You should come sit. Standing there will get you tired, and I also can’t have a chat with you if you are all the way there."
Her voice was like a breath of fresh air. The only person that he had ever seen with such a beautiful voice was the spirit that gave him his name, but he could already tell that this was not her.
He walked through the small path carefully and made his way to the chair. He carefully pulled it out and sat down, his eyes pinned on her in case she made any suspicious moves.
"The shorter the lifespan of a race, the more eager they are to find innovations to leave behind before they die.
Each generation wants to leave something behind for their next generation, and in turn, these new innovations have made life a little more enjoyable for me," she said, picking up the cup and slowly taking it to her lips.
"Who are you, what is this place, are you another spirit?" Aric threw out the questions on his mind.
"Spirit? I am not a spirit, no. I’m a goddess," she said. Her lips curled up into a small smile as she saw a look of confusion show on his face.
"A goddess? You can’t be serious, right? That’s not possible," he said.
"You got transported to a world where spirits and dragons exist, and what you find hard to believe is that goddesses exist?" she asked.
"I guess I should have thought about that, but it doesn’t change anything. Why would I be with a goddess?" he asked.
"Because you got a key from the system. Did you not try to find out what the key was? No appraisal? No nothing?" she asked, slowly placing her tea down again. It was already less than half of the cup.
"I was in a rush to find out what the system had for me. I figured since it was the system, it would not hurt me, so I took the leap of faith," Aric said.
"You trusted the system? That was a very risky move, you could have lost your life, mortal. More importantly, why are you not shocked by the fact that I know about the system?" she asked.
"I’m in the middle of the void, floating on a garden, and seeing a goddess. I think there are bigger issues to handle now than the system.
But since we are on that issue, are you the one that gave me the system? Or are you the one that brought me to this world?" he asked.
"No and no. Both of the things you spoke of now, I don’t have the power to do. I can carry out some reincarnations and other things, but I wouldn’t have the power to carry your soul, because your soul is really something else.
There are many things I can’t tell you here and now, but there are a few things I can say, and one is that the system is never an ally. No matter what happens, use it as a tool to help you and not as your guide.
It is a power that even I have little understanding of, and I have seen the misuses of the system destroy worlds.
I know you have so many questions about being here and about me, but you are a mortal, and I can’t tell you those things.
As a matter of fact, you aren’t supposed to get here now. It should have been long into the future, but the system set this up," she explained and then picked up her cup. She drank from it again, and suddenly the aura around her changed.
The area went ghost-cold, and Aric felt his skin freeze. He looked at her, and it was as though he stared at death itself.
"There is much for you to do in this world, Aric. Secrets lie within the spirits and humans, things that shouldn’t be known.
You are the only one suited to find those truths, and if you fail, the world of Veilrend is on the line. I hope you understand—your time is ticking. Work faster," she said. She picked up the pot of tea and poured some for him, and immediately she dropped the pot, she vanished from her seat.
Aric was shocked by the turn of events. He stared down at the tea, not sure if he should drink it, but he decided to. He picked the cup up and drank it. The water tasted bitter, yet soothing to his throat.
After placing the cup down, a door opened for him. He got on his feet and was about to walk out, only to see the same crest from the key and from Terra on the table. Somehow, he had not noticed it until now.
"Something doesn’t add up," he said and walked through the door, vanishing into the darkness.
