Chapter 185: Sniffing Him Out
Chapter 185: Sniffing Him Out
DACE
~
I was on the verge of losing my shit, I mean why the fuck was Emma giving this new guy attention? WHY?! I caught her staring at him during lunch and my body and lion have never been on edge. I can’t tell what she was thinking but for certain, her entire focus rested on this guy. I heard he was new, in our class and Emma was propelled to him and I don’t like it.
When she asked me to sniff him out I was more unsettled, even though she told me she wasn’t attracted to him, how was I supposed to believe that? When every now or then she was looking at him like some rare gemstone? It made my bones hot as well as my blood. She was testing me and I didn’t like it, even when she said she would walk to him and talk with him if I didn’t sniff him out, was she that desperate?
I can’t wrap my head around it because I have never seen Emma this engrossed about someone, well except me... but having her peel that attention away from me was alarming. I know I’m sounding selfish right now but I was... I can’t have my baby girl having some attraction toward some guy. She’s mine!
Fuck! Watching this view of her now was meddling with my thoughts, she was peeking at the guy across the hallway so I got a better view of her butt, Emma might be all tiny and petite but she has nice hips, judging from it you could tell she would add more weight as the time comes.
She faces me. "Okay... go no" she urges me but I wasn’t pleased at all because I was suddenly reminded of why I was here, I should be spending quality time with her and not this. One thing led to another and the moment she sounded like she was scared about the guy’s presence, all sense of jealousy was shut down, for now.
I only realized she was worried about him being supernatural because of the mixed feelings she was having toward him that she couldn’t pinpoint. I wanted only to erase that confusion from her mind and give her ease. So I will do it for her, anything for her.
"I will sniff him out, anything out of the ordinary we will bring it to the family hearing," I said. I was curious too because if this guy is a supernatural then there’s a problem because we should have known, we always know.
"Okay," she mumbles.
"Keep your distance" having her near me wasn’t gonna help, I was too attracted to her delicate scent like a moth to a flame, all my senses were shut down when it came to her and focused on just her. I really needed to work on controlling that but when it comes to Emma, that was a lost word in my vocabulary, I was being lenient as much as I could.
I watched as she rushed to the stairs so I turned to the hall and walked towards the guy. He had his ears covered with his headset, working something in his locker, his presence was so subtle that he wasn’t there, he was unique because he could just stand in this crowd like a ghost. Almost like he didn’t want to be seen by the world and to be left alone, well this reminds me of someone.
I walked to my locker which was the opposite of his, I still kept my eyes on him as I pretended to open my locker. Fuck I can’t believe I was doing this, I was curious too, about what this guy was, and Emma has succeeded in making me more curious about this guy. So I took a whiff of the air directed to him, just a slight inhale I was able to pick him up so I closed my eyes trying to register everything about him and what I found was...
I flashed my eyes open, confusion was written all over my face, was this possible? It can’t be even for a human or a supernatural there was always something to distinguish them, so how the fuck is this guy odorless? Not even a slight characteristic, nothing! Absolute nothing... I have never experienced this before because I always knew what the nature of someone smelt like but this guy was nothing.
He shut his locker dragging me back to reality, he adjusted his bag like he wanted to move out after he was done doing whatever in his locker, but he paused almost like he knew I was watching him but he can’t because of the crowded hall and he wasn’t looking my way but seemed like he did or was my mind playing tricks on me. I half expected him to turn in my direction and find me out and that would only mean he did sense me which was impossible.
So he proved me wrong by walking away to class and the bells rang. Suddenly my sense of smell was shut when my female scent crowded my nose.
"So? What did you find out?"
I faced her big green eyes filled with curiosity and then I knew that moment that no matter what, my baby being the detective she is never gonna let this go... this was deja vu over again so I did the only thing I could to set her at ease.
"He smelt normal"
She frowned almost like she didn’t believe the ’Normal’ to be true and not my words. "S-Sure?"
"Yes baby, now can you let this go?"
She sighed heavily and I could tell she was still thinking. "Maybe I’m just being paranoid" she mumbled and I slid my hand on her waist pulling her to my body and she looked up at me.
"Let’s get to class" she nodded but her mood wasn’t lifted, she still felt like something was wrong. I did the right thing... with time her curiosity will fade.
But... I trained my eyes over to where the guy once stood, there was one pressuring thought in my head, how the fuck can someone have no scent?
~
"What do you mean he has no scent?" Emilia said, closing the cupboard before facing me with her puzzled dark hazels. "That’s odd coming from you" she almost huffed at me. I knew she was mocking me and she had every right to because she knew I could sniff out anything or anyone if I wanted to without batting an eye but this was different.
I leaned against the island. "I’m serious he doesn’t"
"O...kay. That is strange" she said finally believing my words, well it was about time because I don’t know how else to spell it to her. "So we don’t know if the new guy is a human or a supernatural"
"He’s definitely not a supernatural, I know that, he feels human but..."
"But what?" she urged.
"I don’t know there’s nothing suspicious about him... yet"
She exhaled sharply. "So what did you tell Emma?"
I returned her question with silence and I made the mistake of letting her read my mind.
"Oh no, you didn’t!" she stormed to me. "You lied to her?!"
"I didn’t have a choice, Em. Look I know her, we BOTH know she won’t let this go"
"Shy but such a detective" she shakes her head. "If it wasn’t for that trait of hers I wonder how you two would have stayed glued to each other"
She was right there... but. "I couldn’t stay away"
"Relatable. So what now? What are you gonna do?"
"I don’t know... he’s normal... what just bugs me is his..." I sighed, folding my arms across my chest. "...scent"
"Look if he was a supernatural we would have known the moment he came here. Wait...new guy, new family. You don’t think he’s from the new family too, do you?"
"Has to be," I shrugged. "Heard anything about this new family?"
"Nope, I think just a regular family who moved to Juneau of all places"
I knew there was nothing to worry about...that odorless scent of his just caught me off guard. He was a normal teen who was isolated and probably the loner type.
"Emma might just be paranoid, it’s good you told her that for it to slide" she tapped my shoulder before attempting to walk away.
"When are you planning to come to school?"
"As soon as I’m done with my break"
"Summer break ended a week ago"
She shrugged.
"You have grown on Emma"
"Aww did she miss me?’ She mused.
I rolled my eyes, it was hard to admit but seems like Emma and Emilia were awfully getting along. I never expected such from Emilia, she was the kind of person to rub anyone off with her attitude, and the only one that can put up with her was me and Lucas but I guess Emma now.
"Oh so tell me... what’s the name of our new guy?"
I pinched the bridge of my nose. "Grayson Yaeger"
