Chapter 246: The past 230, two

Li Chengyi only felt his body shudder, his skin prickling with countless stings as if someone were piercing him with numerous needles.

His heart began to beat violently, accelerating. Blood surged through his veins in all directions like the airflow from an exploded balloon.

Thud!!

He stepped down with his right foot and swung his heavy sword forward.

A crack of green lightning shot out, but eerily, the lightning went straight through the woman’s body without any effect.

Glint Flash!

At the same time, a ball of golden light exploded.

Scorching, purifying, the explosive impact, all erupted at once.

But what was horrific was that the scream was still there, continuing! It was as if it hadn’t been affected at all.

As the golden light dissipated, the figure of the woman rippled like disturbed water, twisted for a moment, then returned to normal.

She was still standing at the door, still howling.

Li Chengyi felt the pricking sensation on his skin becoming more and more pronounced. He immediately grabbed the bag containing letters, turned sideways, and leaped.

Thud.

He crashed through the window on the second floor, breaking the glass, and landed on the street outside.

All was quiet.

The howling stopped, and no trace of the woman’s figure followed.

It was as if what he had just heard and seen were all illusions.

Hu...

’What the hell was that!?’ Li Chengyi looked around the empty streets and exhaled sharply.

He lifted his hand and saw, to his surprise, a large patch of purple-red spots had appeared on the back of his hand.

Some spots had merged into one, forming ulcer-like wounds.

The largest was even the size of a green bean.

Meow~

The sound of the striped cat came from the side.

Li Chengyi glanced at it. The cat had somehow gotten out earlier, sitting by the side of the road looking at him, occasionally licking its front paws.

"You’re quite clever," he said.

Li Chengyi looked up at the window he had just leaped from, but there was no movement there.

He simply found a clothing store on the side of the street, went in, sat down, and continued to unfold the letters to read.

The translator was intact, and not a single letter was damaged, which was simply bizarre.

It was clear that the woman’s howl was probably only targeting living creatures.

"Armored Mud Monster’s sword targets dead objects... That kind of howl targets living beings... This place... really is..." Li Chengyi was beginning to understand.

These two types of creatures were probably specific defensive measures for those entering the Dark City.

The howl was tremendously powerful; after all, he had undergone the transformation of the Inferior Shadow Dragon Bloodline, far beyond the strength of a common man.

According to his estimation, his physique was at least three to four times the limit of a pure-blooded Reinforced Human.

Even with such physical strength, he experienced ruptures of capillaries and bleeding all over his body within a few seconds under that howl.

In other words, if it were a common man, they would be doomed the moment they heard the sound.

Unfolding the third letter, he once again pressed the translator onto it. A voice rang out.

"According to the cycle, we need to stay on the street for an hour. The switch between internal and external cycles is getting faster and faster, and my obsessive-compulsive disorder is acting up again. Perhaps dying here is our ultimate fate..."

"Right, I found a strange device here, on the rooftop of Building 2, it only lasted a few minutes, then vanished. I suspect it’s related to what we are looking for."

Below was a simple drawing.

It was a triangular frame with a stone pillar in the middle. On the pillar was an irregularly shaped rock-like object, which had been painted black.

There was no new content below, so Li Chengyi flipped through the small bag only to find it empty. What remained were some colorful hair ties and a somewhat oxidized golden ring.

The ring was engraved with a coiled cyclops snake.

Three letters in total, plus a Cyclops Ring, were Li Chengyi’s new findings.

Isna, that must be the name of the letter’s recipient; it’s unclear whether this person was still alive.

He packed everything back into the bag and stored it in his inner pocket.

Meow~

The striped cat came again.

This time, Li Chengyi examined it carefully and indeed noticed something unusual.

There was a faint ring mark on the cat’s tail, where the fur was shorter and lighter than the surrounding area.

He quickly associated it with the hair ties in the bag and the small pouch...

’Could it be... they use this cat to send letters to each other?’ A peculiar thought crossed his mind.

Otherwise, it made no sense to have so many colorful hair ties in the place where such important letters were stored.

Immediately, Li Chengyi crouched down, took out the bag again, tied it closed with a hair tie, and then shook it in front of the cat.

Meow~

The cat seemed taken aback.

Then, it actually approached step by step, walked up to Li Chengyi, turned around, and stood with its tail erect.

It seemed to be waiting for him to tie the bag to its tail.

Li Chengyi accurately tied the empty bag at the spot with the ring mark.

It fit perfectly.

Meow~~

The striped cat let out another call and confidently headed towards the door.

Li Chengyi followed closely behind.

This time the cat did not stop but moved swiftly and speedily on one side of the street.

About two minutes later...

The cat slowed down, then turned a corner and slipped into an iron gate of some kind of guild hall on the left.

Li Chengyi followed, not slowing down, covered in a Floral Dress, and rammed headlong into the locked iron door.

Thud.

The iron door collapsed, and Li Chengyi, following the cat, reached the redwood-patterned security door inside the guild hall.

The security door was half-open, and beyond was pitch black, eerily silent.

The cat slipped in gracefully, disappearing into the darkness.

Li Chengyi looked left and right to make sure there were no issues, then followed through the security door.

Thud.

The heavy armored boots of the Floral Dress landed on the stone floor with a crisp sound.

Woooo~~

Suddenly, the shrill alarm outside sounded again.

Li Chengyi turned to glance outside.

Outside the guild hall’s iron gate, black tall figures appeared out of nowhere— they were armored mud monsters, each standing three meters tall!

’They’re even taller than the ones we encountered before....’ Li Chengyi’s heart chilled.

Clearly, a pattern began to emerge in the blind spot: after killing a monster, the next one would surely be stronger.

He turned away and began observing the guild hall, using the faint light from outside.

Empty.

That was his only sensation.

The entire hall had elevators on both sides leading to the second floor, and in the middle, there was a large cylindrical showcase pedestal. It seemed designed to display some valuable items, protected by a layer of reinforced glass.

The showcase pedestal had a diameter of about four or five meters, indicating that the items on display were large.

All over the floor were puddles of dark stains, whether they were the result of spilled juice or something else dried up.

Li Chengyi, with the help of the translator’s faint green light, looked around and found that the kitten had moved to a corner on the right front.

There stood a H-shaped sofa and a low table, evidently a temporary resting area.

It was rubbing its tail against a corner of the sofa, continuously.

Li Chengyi approached, halfway turning to look at the sofa.

Suddenly, he halted in his steps.

On the sofa sat a pitch-black, emaciated humanoid figure.

It was a mummified corpse.

The mummy, its head thrown back, sunken eye sockets staring at the ceiling above, arms spread open resting on the top of the sofa.

This was a very relaxed posture.

Meow~

The kitten began to continuously rub against the mummy’s trouser leg. Clearly, it did not realize that the person was dead.

Li Chengyi went over, swiftly examined the body, and found something from the pockets of the mummy’s clothes.

It was a pocket watch.

The dark gold watch sprang open at the push of a button, revealing a photo inside.

In the photo was a baby with a sweet smile and bright eyes.

Below, a line was written in White Star Language, too fine and too small for Li Chengyi to understand.

He closed the pocket watch and noticed a Golden Cyclops Ring on the right pinky finger of the mummy.

’A member of an organization?’ he thought.

He crouched down to remove the bag tied to the kitten’s tail. After pondering, he put the ring and the watch into the bag.

’If the three letters I saw before were all written by this person, then... what among the content he mentioned should I pay attention to?’ Li Chengyi thought carefully.

’Mud Giants, Black Armored Giants, Black Armored Persons, Giant Eye King, and the rooftop of Building No. 2, that tripod...’ he recalled the details.

He continued to search in the mummy’s coat pockets but, sadly, found nothing.

The corpse was dressed in grey, in long sleeves and pants, just like a common manual labourer on an assembly line.

This attire did not seem appropriate for a wealthy person.

Yet, his finger wore a gold ring, a Cyclops Ring.

This caused Li Chengyi to feel a certain dissonance.

He looked over the mummy once more.

"Eh?"

Suddenly, he noticed the other hand of the mummy was clenched tightly into a fist.

"Sorry about this," he said as he reached to pry the fist open. The mummy’s fingers immediately snapped like twigs.

Inside the clenched hand was a tight wad of grey paper.

A glint appeared in Li Chengyi’s eyes as he reached to pick the paper wad out.

He carefully unfolded the paper, revealing a very simplistic map.

The map depicted a circular city.

The city was divided into six districts, each further divided into numerous buildings.

The craftsmanship of the map was crude, but one could barely discern the outlines and meanings.

’So... building No. 2. There are six districts, six places in total?’ he wondered.

He noticed that at three points on the map, additional red dots were marked.

Probably indicating either dangerous areas or their own locations.

There was a sentence written below the map.

Li Chengyi immediately pressed the translator onto it.

"I’ve found the location of... the door... it needs a key to open... Unfortunately... the leader... took my share, survive."

The handwriting at the end had a slight red tinge, perhaps it was written in blood.

Li Chengyi silently put the map away into the bag.

If he didn’t have the Evil Flower, perhaps his end would be the same as this man’s before him.

’So where exactly is the location of the door? Is it one of the red dots on the map, or... a place he did not mark?’ Li Chengyi felt reflective.

No matter how terrifying, dangerous, and despair-inducing the blind spot was.

In the end, there would be elites like the mummy before him, resolute and successive in their attempts to move towards escaping the clutches of the blind spot’s final fate.

’... Door, and key...’ Suddenly, a spark flashed through Li Chengyi’s mind.

He considered the seated posture, the attitude of the mummy.

If he was close to death, why would he manage to adopt such a relaxed position?

Was it because liberation was near? Or... was there another reason, deliberately posed in that position?

Li Chengyi studied the mummy.

Suddenly, he had a realization.

He looked up sharply.

His gaze followed the mummy’s eyes, both looking towards the ceiling of the guild hall.

In this moment, their lines of sight seemed to overlap across time.
