Chapter 154: News of a baby (3)
Jasper dusted off his clothes. "I didn’t mean to disturb you. I was only following what my master wanted. He would not like to know the others have attacked you or your wife. I should be thanked for taking care of the other one following you. Nasty little fellow."
"Other one?" Xavier asked.
"The other shifter. I know that one to serve the king’s family. Well, he wasn’t following you. It was your wife," Jasper said since Xavier wasn’t around that time. "She’s got someone following her when she’s out of your estate. I wanted to know why so I could pass it on to the master."
Xavier wasn’t surprised to hear Darius would go so far. Between Vivienne and Darius, Xavier would place his money on Darius to be the one behind this.
"Like my wife said, you might be of some use to us," Xavier said, now seeing why Jasper was kept around.
Jasper didn’t like the sound of this. This was the same man who not long ago wanted to feed him to a cat. His life was already in danger from Xavier’s guards sensing his presence on the estate and trying to kill him.
"When did my grandfather tell you to wake him?" Xavier asked, curious about what his grandfather was waiting for.
"He gave me four reasons to wake him. If the king dies, if conflict within the family gets out of hand, if his father wakes and the most important one is if you are close to having a child," Jasper answered.
This annoyed Xavier for two reasons. One, his grandfather was too invested in matters which shouldn’t concern him and Jasper had interrupted what needed to be done to have a child.
"Jasper, you never want to disappoint your master, right?" Xavier asked.
"Never," Jasper replied, shaking his head. "I always do as my master asks."
"Then, do you know how babies are made?" Xavier questioned, doubting Jasper knew. Jasper was many years older than Xavier but Jasper often acted like a child. Was it because Jasper was always terrified?
Jasper was insulted Xavier had to ask. "Of course I do. I’ve been with women far before you existed. If you need some advice, I am the one to speak to."
Xavier returned to pour himself some more wine. "So, my grandfather would have every reason to be angry when he learns you interrupted my time with my wife."
"Well," Jasper started but couldn’t finish. It would be terrible for him if his master believed he was the reason why Xavier was so behind in having a child. Strangely, the master was quite interested in becoming a great-grandfather.
Despite spending so much time beside his master, Jasper was yet to figure out if his master wanted to hear news of a child from Xavier because he wanted to see if the child inherited Xavier’s power or if he simply wanted to be a great-grandfather. It seemed to be both.
"The second you see me alive with my wife, you need to flap your little wings to get far away from us and if I have to witness my wife uncomfortable in our home because she is afraid you will be at one of the windows, I will feed you to my hounds while you are still alive. Do we understand each other?" Xavier asked.
Jasper nodded his head, just thankful to be alive. He was knocking on death’s doors without realising it. However, Jasper realised something important. What was told to him by the other servants was wrong.
Xavier hadn’t married the Harrison girl to upset her father or to get what the Harrisons were rumoured to be blessed with. The truth was that Xavier loved his wife.
Jasper hadn’t considered love to be a reason but now he did.
Xavier frowned, once again annoyed when Jasper came to touch his forehead. "Get your hand off of me before I break it."
Jasper was quick to move his hand. "It was silly of me to think a strong pureblood like you could be ill. Is that all you need from me? For me to stop following you when you are on the estate?"
"No. Don’t follow me, follow my wife and watch out for any more shifters like you. It is only when you spy on us when we are alone that would make me want to kill you. Do I have to worry about you spying on us again?" Xavier asked, more than happy to kill Jasper if needed.
"No. I will be more mindful of your time with your wife," Jasper replied.
"Good. Now tell me the truth. Why does he want to wake up at the same time as my grandfather? I’m also curious why he wants to wake up if Darius were to die," said Xavier. He had a feeling what the reason could be and didn’t like it.
"There’s been a lot of talk about who would replace Darius as king. There might be another vote soon amongst the families and your grandfather wants you to be considered. It was always Darius and a few others of your peers who wanted to be king. It’s time another family ruled," Jasper honestly answered.
Some might call it biased because Jasper thought it was only fair the Blackthorns ruled. They were the ones who lent others their power. Darius had only been lucky his family were the main ones interested in ruling but now, that had changed.
"As for your great-grandfather, my master was angry about something. Not only about his father but with the other elders. I don’t know what it is. I never questioned what upset him since he would later tell me if I needed to deal with it for him but he didn’t," Jasper replied, just as puzzled as Xavier.
Jasper continued, "My master hasn’t given me a year or day to wake him up. He is simply waiting. I overheard some Blackthorns speaking of waking him. They mustn’t do that. He will be upset if they wake him when it is not time. It is only my job to do."
Jasper had enough spies to know it was Nathaniel trying to convince the others to be the ones to wake his father instead of doing it himself. Nathaniel might be the favourite child but that wouldn’t spare him from his father’s anger.
"Take me to see him. I want to see with my eyes that his coffin is still closed," said Xavier.
Jasper was reluctant to do this since no one roamed where Orlork Blackthorn rested. Jasper and the other servants were too afraid that the slightest noise might wake Orlork. The one positive side to Xavier accidentally waking Orlork would be the servants wouldn’t be blamed and Orlork would be happy to see Xavier.
"It is this way," Jasper said, leading the way to the chamber. "My master and all the other servants are resting."
Jasper stopped before a large door which was off-limits to outsiders and even to some of the Blackthorns.
Xavier opened the door and just like Jasper said, there were many closed coffins for the trusted servants who decided to follow their master and Orlork Blackthorn in the middle of the room. "If anyone comes to wake him, send a servant to tell me right away."
"I will!" Jasper promised.
Jasper let out a sigh of relief when Xavier started to walk away. He lived to fly around another day.
