Chapter 153: News of a baby (2)

Xavier exited the carriage and looked ahead at the home he never had plans of visiting until his grandfather woke up. It was just as gloomy as he remembered it as if you would drop dead the second you walked through the gates.

His grandfather succeeded in designing his home to scare others away.

Xavier walked up to the gates which opened when he got close enough. All he could think about was how nervous Selene would be if she ever came here so he wouldn’t bring her along at any point.

The closer Xavier got to the front door, the more eyes fell on him but no one approached him since they all knew who he was. Xavier recalled his grandfather not caring for too many interactions with outsiders. At most times, he rarely spoke to the other relatives.

"Lord Blackthorn," a servant greeted him at the door.

The visit from Xavier was quite unexpected since Xavier rarely visited. The servant was worried there would be trouble here. That shouldn’t happen since the master’s house needed to stay quiet so no one would accidentally wake him up. He might fry all of them if woke too early.

"Bring Jasper to me," Xavier said as he walked through the door.

"Right away."

Xavier was quite familiar with the one spying on him since it was the servant his grandfather used to keep by his side, caring for him like he was a son. Jasper was perhaps the one servant his grandfather trusted most to wake him at the right time and to relay to him any news about the Blackthorns.

While Jasper was a good servant to Xavier’s grandfather, he was a fool to Xavier now.

Xavier helped himself to his grandfather’s vast supply of wines he kept to drink when he would wake. Behind him, he heard the servants’ reactions to him picking up a bottle. "Tell him it was me who drank it. He will not do anything to you then."

This was what his grandfather wanted. For Xavier to visit more often. He might be upset it happened while he was asleep but still, Xavier had gone to see him.

Xavier poured himself a glass of wine and after the first sip, he decided to take the bottle with him to give Selene a try. It would be considered a late wedding gift from his grandfather.

Xavier turned around when he heard footsteps behind him and the sound of someone muttering in a panic.

"Young master Blackthorn," Jasper greeted the young Blackthorn. He first worried about the wine Xavier drank since it was his master’s favourite but then he worried about Xavier wanting to speak about him following him. "It’s a pleasure to have you here. The master will be delighted to know you have come."

"Do you value your life, Jasper?" Xavier asked, raising his glass to inspect the perfect ruby colour wine.

"Oh, I do. I wish to live for a long time beside my master," Jasper replied. He gulped and turned to the other servants who unfortunately started to walk away. ’Those traitors!’

"How could a man who values his life be so careless as to be spying on me at a time when I want to be alone with my wife? It sounds like you want to die," Xavier said, setting the glass down. "Doesn’t it sound that way to you?"

"It doesn’t. I was only doing as my master instructed me to. You must understand," Jasper said, backing away from Xavier as he got closer.

"Don’t back away from me, Jasper. I promised my wife I would be gentle with you," said Xavier.

Jasper didn’t think that meant much considering Xavier’s gentle ways still left him in constant pain. I wasn’t going to stay there if you were two- I mean. I was only to rest for the night and then you two showed up. I had already picked that tree."

No one knew how tiring it was to be flying around all day with such little wings.

"You want me to believe that as big as my estate is, I picked the same place you were resting. I was having a good night which I didn’t want to be ruined and you know who ruined it? You," Xavier pointed at Jasper.

Jasper didn’t think all the blame could be placed on him when they were the ones who decided to go outside when they had plenty of rooms inside the estate.

When Xavier got too close to Jasper’s liking, he shifted into a bat and tried to fly away but he was grabbed before getting too far away.

"Please, I was only doing as the master told me to. Please don’t kill me," Jasper cried.

"It’s good you shifted to this shape since I was thinking of feeding you to a cat," Xavier said, his grip on Jasper tight so the little bat could not fly off.

Jasper gasped. "How dare you! I am the cherished servant of your grandfather. The one who has to wake him and if it happens late, he will be angry with all of us. You won’t want to find another servant to do that job so please, let me go and I will stop following you. I won’t speak a word about what you did."

Jasper tried to shift back to his human appearance in an attempt to surprise Xavier and get out of his hold but he was unable to do so. It came back to him now of his master speaking about Xavier inheriting a very special skill.

"Don’t!" Jasper cried out when Xavier squeezed him a little too tightly. "You could hurt me like that."

"That’s the point. Stop getting lost in thought when I am speaking to you. Why does he want you to follow me?" Xavier asked.

"My master left me with many instructions. I am to keep up with any conflict within the family and with many of you starting to gather, I had to look around to find out what was the reason behind it- Why did you squeeze me again?" Jasper questioned, his wings tapping against Xavier’s hand.

"What he asked you to do has nothing to do with me and my wife. It is my father who is gathering everyone else. Follow him," Xavier suggested.

"It has everything to do with you and your wife. They aren’t happy you picked her and others are watching your father as well as every relative he is creating trouble with. It just so happened that I was left to follow you. I didn’t want to do that," Jasper promised.

Out of everyone who needed to be watched, Jasper didn’t want to be the one who followed Xavier.

"You don’t like me?" Xavier asked, squeezing Jasper again.

"How could that be possible? You’re the master’s favourite grandson-"

"I’m his only grandson," Xavier reminded Jasper.

"And most loved as the only one," Jasper smiled.

Xavier grew bored with their conversation. Jasper was just as silly as Xavier remembered him to be. Why his grandfather adored Jasper was a mystery yet to be solved.

Xavier released Jasper, turning away as the small bat fell to the floor.

"Hey!" Jasper exclaimed, his form turning to a human when he hit the floor. "That hurt."

"You were a bat. You could have flown," Xavier replied.

"Oh."
