Chapter 152: News of a baby (1)

The next day, Selene woke to her body pressed against Xavier’s. It was a common theme in the morning which she had yet to figure out if it was Xavier’s doing or if she had a habit of seeking him out in her sleep.

How did she go from sleeping near the edge of the bed to lying in the centre with her head lying on his chest?

Selene made no attempts to be sneaky getting out of bed since it was likely Xavier was already awake. She wouldn’t fall for this a second time but before she left the bed, Selene pinched his hand. It had not left her mind that he was getting over the effects of almost going into a deep slumber.

"Will it be a habit for you to pinch me in the morning?" Xavier asked, holding her hand to stop her from leaving the bed. The sky wasn’t bright so he didn’t see any reason to leave their bed yet. "I am fine," he said, knowing the reason behind the pinch.

"I will determine if you are fine. Can you please let go of my hand? The day has started and you should stick with your plan of dealing with who stalks us. Well you," Selene said since there would be no reason to follow her. "I don’t do anything to make them concerned."

"You are with me. That is concerning enough," said Xavier. "You can stay in bed and do me. Let us see if I can make a wonderful hobby for you."

Selene slipped her hand out of Xavier’s hold. "Of all things you had to hear, why must it be that? I won’t ever make you be that to me. I am starting to wonder if it will be a good idea for you and Francesca to be in the same room."

Selene didn’t want Francesca to be giving Xavier any suggestions or gifts. She was already weak in the knees with his playfulness.

"I will be here on the estate for the day so you don’t need to worry about me. I must wait for Francesca to decide what time we need to visit her home. I thought I would wake up and be curious about the ball, but I am not," said Selene.

She wasn’t itching to find out what drama was there.

"I only look forward to speaking with a friend. Have you heard anything about the search for Oliver? It is one thing I am concerned about the guards coming to you for," Selene said, concerned about whether the guards found any hints.

"As long as Lucas did his part, I won’t be taken away. Even if they were to find a clue, I am not going anywhere," Xavier promised. "I once got bored and dangled clues before them yet here I lay now married to a beautiful woman."

"I am curious, how many have you killed? Can I walk around the outside of the estate and know that I am not stepping on anyone’s grave?" Selene asked.

Xavier laughed since it was silly to think he would ruin his land by burying fools on it. "You don’t need to worry about that. No one is here."

"Besides your guards. I am starting to think some are witchers and others are ghosts. I will prove it in the future," Selene said, knowing her search would one day pay off.

Selene got off the bed and walked to the door to see if Agnes was awake.

"Is that why you walk around outside so often?" Xavier wondered.

"It is part of the reason why. The other reason is I enjoy seeing the estate. It is quite beautiful. Now," Selene turned around to have one last look at him on the bed. "While this is a beautiful sight, I need you to hurry up and find that bat because it is all that is on my mind. I am sure whoever it is will be happy to see you."

Xavier knew they wouldn’t since he intended to kill the bat.

Last night, during their return to their room Selene kept glancing at the window. She couldn’t be comfortable in the one place she should be.

Xavier got out of bed with one thing on his mind. How was he going to punish the fool who ruined the progress he was making with Selene? There were too many ways he could do it.

Xavier approached Selene to give her a morning kiss on her cheek. "Do not find yourself in trouble. Somehow, I think you could manage to do that on that estate."

"I will not. Most of the recent trouble which has followed me is because I have become your wife. Too many are interested in our marriage," said Selene.

In Selene’s eyes, she had not done anything to warrant the recent drama. Her only focus had been on Gabriel but now others became her enemies.

"I will make it one less person interested today. Excuse me," Xavier said, leaving first to get ready for the day.

"Wait!" Selene grabbed his arm. "Is it a good idea to harm one of your grandfather’s servants? Isn’t it enough to ask them to stop watching us? At least here? If they watch us at other places around the town, I am not fully against it. What if something happens to me and my guards are not around? You can rely on the servant to tell you."

"I will not need a nosey servant to tell me where my wife is. I will know where you are and keep you safe at all times. If I cannot do that as your husband then all my promises have been for nothing. When I am not there to protect you, Lucas and others will be there. Do not underestimate them," said Xavier.

Selene touched Xavier’s arms. "I am not underestimating them. I simply think it will be smart to make use of someone else following us. You are important to the Blackthorns so I doubt this servant will let it get out that you killed someone. Perhaps they are only following you to make sense of the current state of your family."

Selene continued, "At least find out the reason behind following you before you kill them. We might learn something we should be aware of. Our night was spoiled so you could give them a little hit. Who witnesses a husband and wife alone but does not leave?"

Xavier chuckled, surprised she welcomed hitting the culprit. "A very clumsy servant who doesn’t know when to get lost. I will be gentle with my approach."

"I doubt that means you will not have him fearing for his life. I shall leave it to you. If you do not mind, I will be busy with the maids today as we go through your storage. I am hoping to find an old portrait of you. Do not frown," Selene touched his face. "It cannot be that bad."

"I am not worried about how the portrait looks. I am worried about the reason you want it. Did my mother put you up to this?" Xavier wondered.

"No," Selene shook her head. "I am freshening up my memory of you. I will get out of your way so you may leave and on your way out, do not order Harold to hide your portraits."

"It is possible the talent your family inherited was to read minds," Xavier said since it was what he intended to do.
