Chapter 125: Helping hand (4)
Ruby couldn’t believe the nerve of Selene to threaten her. Selene was only able to speak up because Xavier was by her side.
Ruby regretted not trapping Selene in this home, keeping her under her control so nothing like this would ever happen. She had underestimated Selene by once believing Selene wouldn’t dare speak back to them since she was all alone.
It would have been best to find a way to claim that Selene was in on her parents’ plans so the court would take her away and they would never have to deal with Selene again.
Ruby refused to back down. "This is Trevor’s home. You already have a large estate to yourself."
"So? This home has always belonged to me and my parents. Don’t you have a home for you and your husband? Why don’t you move elsewhere and give it to Trevor if you are so concerned about him having a home? I am not letting this get back into your hands," said Selene.
This home was out of Selene’s hands for far too long. It was almost unrecognisable with how many changes they made to it. Everything Selene adored about it was gone.
"All of you try to make me the bad one for wanting my home back when it was all of you who waited for me when I was mourning to come take what you could. Instead of pointing fingers at me, you should focus on how you acted. Since none of you treated me like family, I will do the same. Get off what belongs to me," Selene said, her patience gone.
Ruby laughed. "You’ve always been a silly girl lost in a fantasy world. How were we to keep acting like family after what your parents did? Do you think the court only looked into them? All of us were questioned and accused. After what we went through, we were owed something. You should be upset your parents did the unthinkable."
"When you first showed up here after they were killed, I was relieved. I thought I would have a helping hand to look after the home while I dealt with burying them. Little did I know how much you hated my mother and envied the life my father offered her. I wouldn’t be surprised if you spoke lies about them to have them killed," Selene said.
There wasn’t anything Selene could put past Ruby at this point.
Ruby scoffed, offended Selene thought she was jealous. "I wasn’t jealous. Look where he led her."
"I will make sure to remind you every chance I get of how you begged her for things and she was so kind to give it to you. I know how my uncle is. He won’t spoil you as you like so it must have annoyed you to see how my father was. Trevor isn’t smart to pull off taking my home from me so it was all you. You got what you had been eyeing for years," Selene said, seeing right through Ruby.
Ruby had put on a good act for years and only after Selene’s parents died did she reveal her true nature.
"Xavier, an hour was too kind. They didn’t give me that kindness when they tried to get rid of me. Toss everything belonging to them out the gates. I don’t want it piling up at the door and if they try to block the guards’ path, do whatever is necessary to get them out of the way," said Selene.
Why should she be kind to the people who mistreated her?
Selene didn’t care how her words came off to others. If she continued to have a bit of kindness in her heart for these people, they were going to think they could treat her as they liked.
Selene turned around to go back to the carriage, trusting that Xavier would get them out for her. She planned to keep a watchful eye on Ruby to see if she would be foolish to raise her hand to Xavier again. Ruby might face a broken hand if she was not careful.
Ruby looked at Xavier, only to realise that he had been smiling while she spoke to Selene. "You cannot. Please," she pleaded.
It wounded Ruby emotionally to have to plead. She was always a prideful woman yet here she was begging.
Ruby didn’t have a choice. If Trevor lost this home then they needed to rush to find another to keep Paige happy. Unfortunately, they wouldn’t get one of this size so quickly.
Xavier pulled Trevor by his shirt and pushed him in the direction of the gate.
"You!" Ruby exclaimed. Her son was not to be treated like this.
Ruby saw that Trevor’s wound was almost healed up but was he in a state to fight Xavier and all the men present?
"No!" Ruby heard Paige scream.
While Ruby was concerned about Trevor, she was more worried about Paige.
Ruby returned inside to keep the men away from Paige. "Paige!" She called out.
Ruby stumbled upon Paige trying to hold onto her things as the men picked them up. There was nothing to be done when they were outnumbered.
Ruby let off a sigh of defeat. For once, she didn’t know what to do. "Paige, you must leave. Just for now until I can get you back here."
"This is my home!" Paige yelled, frustrated it was being stripped from her hands. Her things were being touched by men she did not know. "You all lied to me. All of the Harrisons did. My father was wary about having me come here after all that happened here but you promised to get rid of the old things and make it my home."
Paige had never been embarrassed like this in her life. She wanted to be angry with Selene for coming to disturb her life but after some thought, Paige was angry with the people who lied to her. Trevor and Ruby fooled her all this time.
Paige covered her face with her right hand as she laughed. "My father was right that I shouldn’t have gotten involved with this family but I was the one who pushed for it. You have no home to your son’s name, no wealth, or a good reputation. Everything good about the Harrisons died with her parents."
Ruby wanted to slap Paige for being disrespectful but she couldn’t. Not with who Paige’s father was. "This will all be settled soon,’ she promised.
Paige laughed at how hopeful Ruby was now. "I heard what she told Lord Blackthorn to do to us if we do not leave. How is it that you think that there is still a way for you to get what belongs to her? There’s only so many men in the court you can sleep with and take my word for it that they don’t keep their promises."
"He told lies about me being with another man. I am faithful to my husband," Ruby defended herself.
Paige slid the wedding ring off her finger and set it down for Xavier’s men to toss out. "For your sake, I hope that it is the truth. If you haven’t noticed by now, nothing stays a secret in this town forever. I am returning to my father and I am sure to tell him of how you deceived us."
"I’ll leave it to you to gather my things they take out and send it to me as an apology. You’ll need to prepare yourself for a very expensive apology to my father," Paige said, knowing her father wouldn’t let them get away with this.
Paige decided to leave before she ended up wounded by Xavier or his men. Unlike Ruby and Trevor, she was not a fool to make an enemy out of a Blackthorn.
