Chapter 123: Helping hand (2)
Trevor knew Xavier’s words to be lies. He was well aware something had to be done to claim the home but his mother sleeping with someone wasn’t the way to do it. If his father were to ever hear this then his mother would have hell to pay.
"Mother," Trevor said, needing her to deny it. It was absurd to think she would go that far when she was still with his father.
"Certainly you wouldn’t believe him when he is after our home," Ruby said, hoping Trevor trusted her.
"Our home?" Paige questioned, amused by Ruby’s claim of the home. Ruby seemed to forget she had a home with her husband so this was Trevor’s home. "I think I am the only one confused here. When Trevor courted me, he mentioned having a home. This home."
Paige continued, "It had an awful history to it because of what the last owners did but I turned it around to my liking. Now, you are telling me that I must hand it over to someone? Clear this up quickly for me, Trevor."
Paige was not ready to leave her home. It had taken plenty of her time to change this house to make it worth something. It was she who painted a pretty portrait to have her friends and family not worried about what the former Harrisons did here. No one could just come to snatch it away.
Trevor needed to think of how embarrassing it would be for her to leave and have to explain it to the people around her.
"I don’t know what Lord Blackthorn thinks he knows but this home belongs to Trevor. I have seen the papers myself and I will not stand for you accusing me of seducing a man to claim this home," Ruby argued.
Xavier stepped further into the home to inspect it. "Then, I suggest you sit. My kindness to let you leave peacefully is running out. You should start gathering your things."
"I respect you," Trevor spoke up. "But I will not let you come here and claim my home. Where is Selene? She is the one dragging this one. I am sorry you need to waste your time like this. Can we speak in private?"
Xavier smiled, thrilled by every bit of the conversation. "In private? I hope you aren’t planning on offering me something to make this all go away. There is only one thing I want from you and your mother."
Trevor stepped out of the way to let Xavier pass. He had a feeling what Xavier wanted might involve his life so he didn’t bother asking what he wanted. "You’ve come into my home and insulted my mother with accusations. You’ve gone too far, Lord Blackthorn."
Trevor saw Selene as the root of this problem. She was acting as though he had not offered to help her. There was a good marriage proposal set up for Selene but things didn’t go as planned.
"My uncle was smart in his last moments to realise that Selene couldn’t run this. She was spoiled growing up, not knowing what was needed to run a home. I was a fitting choice. A man like you should see it too," Trevor said, knowing that deep down Xavier felt the same way.
What would Selene know about running such a large home? How would she have saved the Harrison name in the past if it was left to her to fix?
Ruby smiled, trying to present herself lovingly. "I meant it when I said I cared for Selene. It was unfortunate that her father didn’t care for her enough to leave the home to her name. She at least got some money but that wasn’t enough. We were kind not to ask for the money she owed Trevor."
Xavier wanted to speed this along but he first wanted to watch how these people truly convinced themselves that nothing belonged to Selene. They didn’t have proper lies to hide their greedy actions.
"Lucas," said Xavier.
Lucas came forward with a paper delivered from Isaac.
Xavier took the old paper. "Last time, I wanted to see the kind people you are. I wanted to understand where Selene stood with the rest of the Harrisons. That patience isn’t here today since Selene is excited about getting this home back in her hands. This is all the proof I need to throw you out."
Xavier held up the paper for the trio to see clearly. "This one is the original you tried to find and destroy but you didn’t so you settled for forging another with your lover. You counted on no one wanting to look into this for the daughter of a traitor so you got away with it for quite some time."
Paige glared at Trevor. There was no denying that this home belonged to someone else.
Ruby dug her nails into the palm of her hand. How was it that Xavier got his hands on that so fast while a man in court could not find it for her after everything she had done? She longed to get her hand on that paper so Trevor could truly have everything.
Ruby smiled. "I am not convinced that is legitimate. My husband is the uncle of your wife and he believed that his brother left everything to my son so the trouble he caused could be fixed. It was the right decision since your wife could barely stand after her parents died. Someone had to step in to do something."
Xavier folded up the paper nicely, tucking it in the pocket of his shirt. "She was mourning the loss of the parents she cared for and you took that as your chance to come in, outnumbering and backing her into a corner at her lowest moment. You underestimated her since she never gave up fighting for what belongs to her. For the last time, gather your things."
"Don’t leave even a piece of paper belonging to you. I will give you an hour to load what you can into your carriage and after that, everything will be thrown out," said Xavier.
Paige could not believe her ears. Why did she have to face such cruelty?
Trevor saw his marriage flash before his eyes. He could not lose Paige. She was part of the key to making the Harrison name mean something again. "I am not stepping foot out of my home. I don’t care how many guards you have come with. Leave now."
Xavier remained where he stood. He wanted to know what Trevor would do to have him moved. This conversation was starting to bore Xavier. He was ready to simply throw all of them out.
Trevor’s hand shook with anger. He would not be insulted like this. Not even by Lord Blackthorn. "If she wanted to save this house back then, Selene would have accepted Mr. Fletcher’s offer. A few nights in exchange for a little control. Instead, she ran to the little mixed blood who made deals with us. She’s always been a fool."
Lucas glanced at Xavier, awaiting his response. The last man who spoke about Selene ended up without a head so what was going to happen to this one? A pureblood was hard to kill but a man like Xavier could do it.
To Trevor’s surprise, Xavier smiled before turning around.
"I would prefer not to embarrass your mother any further so we should step outside to speak," Xavier said as he walked toward the door. It was taking everything in him to keep his promise to Selene. "Perhaps you could convince me to leave."
Ruby grabbed Trevor’s hand. They shouldn’t trust anything Lord Blackthorn was saying. Since they weren’t only up against Selene, they couldn’t do as they liked. If they weren’t careful, Xavier could gravely injure them both.
Trevor removed Ruby’s hand from touching him. "I got this, mother. I will not lose our home today."
