Chapter 122: Helping hand (1)

"I look forward to chasing them out but isn’t going with so many guards a little bit much? I’m sure they are already terrified of you," said Selene.

Selene constantly looked out the window at the guards riding beside their carriage on horses. It felt like they were going off to war not to reclaim her childhood home.

Xavier was fixated on how Selene looked today. "There is plenty they have piled up which needs to be tossed out with them. Certainly, you do not expect me to do it?"

"No, I did not. I have already planned to employ someone to stay there to clean and look after the home. You did not need to task the guards to come with us. If this many are here, how many are watching the estate?" Selene wondered.

When they were leaving the estate, Selene saw many faces she had not seen before. She also learned that there were women among the guards.

"Without our deal, tell me honestly. Are you some kind of witcher?" Selene asked. Was this why his guards could not be easily spotted? "I have heard of witches and vampires falling in love. I don’t mean to say that you aren’t your father’s son but perhaps someone in your family once loved a witch."

"No secrets are for free between us," Xavier replied.

"Yet I told you what I gave Lucas last night. You are not being fair right now. I will assume that something about you is not just a pureblood. It would not be surprising for the Blackthorns to have such a secret," said Selene.

"Many of them would not like to hear that you believe our lineage is tainted with other creatures. I am only a pureblood," Xavier answered to please her.

Selene glanced at the man closest to the carriage. "Then, there is someone amongst your guards who might have ties to a witch or witcher. It makes sense since witches do not like to show themselves and it is not easy to spot most of your guards on the estate. Have you ever used a witch aside from the stones?"

"Yes. They’ve been useless to me for many years. I don’t have any interest in outing where they are to the court so they accept what I need done. We are here," Xavier said, looking out the window at Selene’s home. "Are you ready?"

Selene nodded her head. "I have long been ready to take back my home. It is quite hard to hold back my excitement."

Until Trevor and Ruby were out of the home, Selene did not want to celebrate. She would only feel like a part of her was back when those who did not belong left her home.

"You can stand back here while I handle it. You don’t have to waste your time telling them to leave," Xavier said, exiting the carriage first.

Selene knew Ruby wouldn’t leave without putting up a fight. She had been fighting with her family since her parents died and did not have it in her to pull them out of the home today. "I will wait here for you to be done. Please, do not drop any of their blood inside my parents’ home."

Xavier hesitated to promise her at first but in the end, he replied, ’I will not."

This spoiled his plans but Xavier had a way around it.

Xavier closed the carriage door, leaving behind a few guards to keep Selene safe before he approached the home.

Instead of a welcome from Selene’s cousin, it was a young woman who answered the door.

"Lord Blackthorn," Paige Harrison gasped, her lips parted as she stared at the man before her. What was a lord doing at their home?

Paige straightened out her dress, trying to tidy her appearance. She curtsied to give him a proper greeting. "It is a pleasure to have you here at our home. If you are here for my husband Trevor then he isn’t far."

"I am here for all of you," Xavier answered.

"Everyone?" Paige spoke softly, trying to understand his words. What interest would the lord have with her? "Is it because we are related to your now wife? It is Selene, I think."

"You think? You don’t know the name of the woman whose home you are standing in? Isn’t that a bit rude of you?" Xavier asked.

Xavier’s visit and words confused Paige since she knew the home belonged to only her husband.

"There must be a mistake. This home was left to my husband, Trevor Harrison. His late uncle left it to him. Would you like to come in? I can find my husband or his mother to settle this for you," Paige said, also needing them to settle it for her.

One of the things which convinced Paige to marry Trevor was the home she was standing in. He had already lied to her because the money he spoke of did not add up.

When Xavier moved to step inside, Paige now noticed the number of men he came with. Was it fine to let him enter the home when it was like this?

"Paige," came Ruby’s sweet call.

Xavier noticed the difference in how Ruby spoke to Paige compared to how she spoke to Selene. He had seen Paige’s face before but did not know she had been married to Trevor. There was one big game at play here.

"Lord Blackthorn," Ruby greeted the unwelcomed man at the door. Why was he here again?

Ruby panicked, worried Paige had heard too much. "This is a welcomed surprise. Paige, we should let the men speak in private. Perhaps we should head out to get the shoes you spoke of."

"Before that, there is something which needs to be cleared up. Lord Blackthorn is under the belief that this home belongs to Selene. The very home that I intend to raise my family in," Paige said, hoping she was not lied to.

Ruby laughed. "This home belongs to my son. We had already sorted this with Lord Blackthorn the last time he came. Should I get the papers to show you?"

’Last time?’ Paige thought. No one had told her of Xavier coming here before. Even if they had to turn him away for being misinformed, how could they not tell her what happened?

Paige was thrilled when she saw Trevor coming towards them. He was the one who could properly clear this up.

Trevor wished to be elsewhere when he saw Xavier was present. "Lord Blackthorn."

"Yes, yes. I am Lord Blackthorn," Xavier said, tired of hearing his name. "The matter of who this home belongs to has already been settled. It is time that you get out of my wife’s home. I am giving you a chance to do this peacefully."

Ruby smiled since she had papers which said otherwise. "I do not know what document you forged but this home belongs to my son. I can have someone from the court come here to prove it to you."

"You mean the man you seduced to have him forge your son’s name? The real papers left behind by her parents have been found and that man is no longer in the court. Oh, forgive me," Xavier said, taking notice of Trevor’s reaction. "It seems your son did not know how you helped him."
