"It is still warm," Selene said, relieved their dinner wasn’t ruined.

Selene sat on the right side of the table and picked up the wine to pour a glass for Xavier.

"Are you sure this is not your way of seducing me?" Xavier asked, hoping it was. However, it would take a lot of wine to affect him.

"No. Nothing about this was to get you in bed with me. Is it wrong for me to want to enjoy dinner alone with my husband without the servants around us? I can send for Harold to have our food placed in the dining hall," Selene said, knowing his answer after Xavier sat down. "I am still thinking of what to give you."

"Give me? For what?" Xavier asked, interested in what weighed on her mind.

"You are a man with everything you want at your fingertips. Since you have greatly helped me, I want to give you something in return but it is hard to find an answer so dinner will have to do for now. Here," Selene placed the glass of wine before him.

"There’s nothing that I need so do not trouble yourself with it. It wasn’t long ago you bought me a sword and I also learned you gifted Lucas something. What did you give him?" asked Xavier.

"Why does it matter what I gave to Lucas? He guards me well so I wanted to give him something as well. I shall have it stay between me and Lucas so you may not take it away from him. Is it wrong in your eyes for me to give him a gift?" Selene asked, picking up on a little jealousy but she had to be wrong.

It couldn’t be that Xavier was jealous over something so small.

Selene laughed. "I do not understand men."

"Men? Would you be happy if I gifted another woman at the same time I gave you something?"

"Ha. You are acting as though I gifted a man courting me. If you were to give Agnes something I would be thrilled since I know you are getting along. I don’t have any feelings for Lucas so it doesn’t matter and with how well I am starting to know you, you wouldn’t hand another woman a gift," Selene said, not the least bit concerned.

If Selene were to witness Xavier giving a gift to another woman, rather than be jealous Selene might feel he was sick.

"So again, men and your jealousy. You are acting like I kissed another man. Perhaps it is bad timing to say that," Selene muttered, looking away from Xavier.

Selene picked up her glass of wine to indulge herself in the taste.

"Is his gift better than mine?"

Selene almost choked on her wine as she laughed while sipping it. "Why in this world would you think that? Jealousy does not suit you but it is funny for me to watch. Why did Lucas even mention I handed him something? I gave him a dagger," she revealed. "While you have the sword. Happy?"

"Don’t give him anything. I already pay him a lot to watch over you," Xavier replied. When he looked at it further, he was paying a man to be near his wife. Protecting her was mostly the job but Lucas spent a lot of time with Selene.

"I like to treat the people around me well. How can I reward Agnes but not Lucas when he was right there with me? I am not going to ask that he return the dagger to me so I hope you will do something about your unwarranted jealousy," said Selene.

Selene was not the kind to take back a gift.

Xavier got over it now that he knew what the gift was. "It makes perfect sense for me to have the sword while he has a mere dagger."

Selene was scared a little by how Xavier smiled after being upset not long ago. "I do wonder how I have managed to last with you for so long. I hope this will be the last of your jealousy."

"Perhaps," Xavier replied. He was certain he would be angry in the future.

Since Selene sat with the women, she was unaware of the gossiping husbands speaking about her appearance at Francesca’s home. While many were wary because of her parents, they could not deny her beauty. Selene carried herself like a true lady which resulted in unnecessary attention.

"I am curious if you would feel the same way if I had given Harold something," Selene said, wondering if it applied to all men. Did he want everything for himself?

"No," Xavier shook his head. "It is Harold."

"You say that as if he is not a handsome man. I’m sure when Harold walks around the town he gets plenty of attention. What is it now?" Selene asked, noticing his frown.

"It is so easy for you to say that Harold is handsome. Can you do the same for me?"

"I recall admitting that you are a handsome man. I’m sure you already know it," Selene replied, not seeing the need to tell him.

"Because it is good to hear from my wife. Doesn’t it make you feel good when I say that you are beautiful?" Xavier questioned. He would like to think his words weren’t all for nothing.

"It does," Selene admitted. His compliments did make her feel good inside. "Then I will tell you that you are more handsome but you mustn’t let it get to your head. What is wrong? Do you not feel well?" She asked, concerned when he winced and set the glass down.

Selene stood up to go to Xavier’s side only to have her hand held and pulled to his lap. "You!"

"It is your fault for being so easy to fool. I already told you that I am fine. Stay still," Xavier said, caging her in his arms. He preferred this seating arrangement.

"You do know it is wrong to use me caring for you to trap me, right?" Selene asked, slowly getting over her anger. There wasn’t a point in being angry over his trick for long.

"I know it is," Xavier replied, still holding onto her. "You may punish me as you like."

"I will do no such thing. A punishment needs to make you regret what you did. Regardless of what I do, you might enjoy it. You are a strange man," Selene said, thinking of herself stranger for having feelings for him. "I was enjoying the comfort of my chair."

"But you can admit this is far better. Let me," Xavier said, shifting her body so he could see her face better. "I will cut your food for you."

"I suppose there is some good in letting you act as my servant. There is something to enjoy about knowing many in town want you to do as they say and fail but here you are acting as my hands. Should I tell them the secret was to become your wife?" Selene wondered.

"No," Xavier replied. He did not need anyone trying to court him. "Maybe it is you who shouldn’t let this get to your head."

"It is too late for that. I am quite enjoying Xavier Blackthorn serving my food but he must move faster before it turns cold," Selene said, enjoying how he didn’t enjoy their position anymore. "It is your fault for having me sit here."

Xavier raised the fork for Selene to eat. "Enjoy this food and leave me alone."

Selene laughed at his behaviour. Xavier was wrong if he thought she didn’t know how to tease him.
