Chapter 111: Advice (2)
Selene continued to leave with Xavier by her side. She said everything she had to say to Fiona and didn’t have the time to listen to anything more.
They didn’t need to entertain everyone who came at their gates. Their lives would be constantly disturbed if they did.
"You are letting them walk away," Fiona said, confused as to why the guards weren’t doing anything.
"I cannot stop them from walking away when we are on their land. You did not tell me of your visit to see the lady. Did you speak about your friendship, trying to get her to forgive you for these lies you spoke of?" Eugene asked.
Fiona didn’t think it was important. "You must find my husband."
"And you need to answer me. I am curious if you tried to repair your friendship with someone you suspected took your husband or was it a ploy to get her to confess? You shouldn’t leave anything out because then I have more questions for you," Eugene said, finding Fiona to be suspicious.
Xavier might have been the one behind this but he needed Fiona to be more truthful.
"You are asking that I think clearly to tell you what happened between me and Selene today? My husband is missing therefore I have focused on finding his whereabouts. You should be focused on finding him," Fiona replied.
Fiona was willing to use all the money they gained from their conversation about Selene to find Oliver. They could always make more once he returned.
"I am asking that you be truthful so I know when there are holes in their story. If you truly tried to fix your friendship with her when you suspected her then it is odd. I will continue to have the guards search for him and the coachman," Eugene promised but he knew how this story would end.
Eugene continued, ’You might not know but there have been attacks all over the kingdom. I will put your husband’s name on the list if there isn’t any evidence found that the Blackthorns did it."
"You are doing what you can to avoid pointing out that they did this. My husband didn’t have any problems with anyone for them to target him," Fiona argued.
"It is random attacks. The mere fact he is a vampire would make him a target. I advise you to not travel alone and use this time to think of how you may go forward without your husband if needed," Eugene advised Fiona.
"Go forward without him?" Fiona laughed. "What am I to do without my husband?"
Eugene placed his hat back on his head as he got ready to leave. There was never any point of coming this far without proof but he followed the instructions given to the town guards.
Eugene peered down at the woman who was reluctant to leave the estate without answers. "Why don’t you consider finding yourself instead of clinging to someone to make decisions for you? Plenty of women in this town have made something of themselves. What holds you back is you."
Fiona could not believe the audacity of the man before her. "You are asking that I move on from my husband when he is missing? If you suspect he is dead then you must go after the ones who did this. As a guard, you should handle this matter better."
Eugene took the reins of his horse from another man. "I am not telling you to move on from him. I am telling you to be prepared if the worst happens. If it is that he has passed and I catch the person behind it, you will not get any money from it. All that you have now is what you must survive on."
Eugene saw his words start to dawn on her as she realised her predicament was far worse than she first believed.
"For your sake, I hope he is alive and will search for him. If he is not, I hope both of your families will be kind. If the home is only in his name and you have no children, I have never seen the husband’s family allow the wife to be there. They would not like the idea of you later bringing another suitor there,’ said Eugene.
Fiona knew it was possible Oliver’s family would try to control the home. What was she to do then? Even Selene struggled to get her home back.
"Good day," Eugene said, leaving Fiona to figure out her way.
Fiona looked away from the guards to stare at the estate. It was cruel how the one person who could provide help in all of this was the one she suspected.
"Gabriel," Fiona muttered. This started with him getting Oliver’s help so he might be the solution.
After all, Fiona heard the assumptions about Selene being the one to kill his mother. Gabriel should use this to help point out Selene’s ways. Fiona was too desperate to think about how this would affect Selene.
Inside, Selene stood by a window watching as Fiona was the last to leave. She had a feeling this might not be the last time she ran into Fiona but it was the last she would entertain a conversation about Oliver.
Selene frowned, annoyed by the squeeze on her hand. She was the one who grabbed Xavier’s hand to bring him inside but it turned to him holding her hand and constantly squeezing it.
Selene looked at Xavier. "What is it?"
"I quite like you when you are angry but you mustn’t direct the anger you have towards them toward me," said Xavier.
"I am not angry with anyone but I am annoyed with you constantly squeezing my hand. You can let it go now," Selene said, trying to pull her hand away but it was useless.
Xavier lifted their hands to kiss the back of Selene’s. "It was the only way to get your attention. Do you regret not speaking to her?"
"No," Selene shook her head. "What more must I say to her? Our friendship is over and as you said, it should have ended long ago. I cannot put up with her love for Oliver and I will not take pity on her now to help her. Once betrayed, I cannot find it in my heart to forgive you."
"It is a smart choice," Xavier said, kissing her hand once more.
Selene pulled her hand out of his hold, succeeding this time. "If I must ask you for more then you are not free to kiss my hand as you want."
Selene walked around Xavier to find something to distract her.
"Then, are we close for neither of us to have to ask for more? Can I act freely?" Xavier asked, testing the waters.
"If I am in the mood for it then yes," Selene replied.
After their moment, there wasn’t any use denying what occurred between them and what she felt. She would only understand what she felt for him if they were closer.
"Are you being honest now?" Xavier asked, believing she was getting her revenge by toying with him.
Selene didn’t answer so he would have an inner battle with himself as he thought about it. With her back to him, Selene was able to keep her smile hidden.
Xavier followed Selene, awaiting a moment when they would be alone so he could test if she was fooling him or not.
