Chapter 110: Advice (1)

"We’ve got to stop meeting like this, Eugene. I’m starting to think that you’re out to ruin my marriage," said Xavier.

Eugene approached the gate to speak to the pair. "How so? I haven’t been in your wife’s ear to say anything bad about you. She has eyes so she will see a few things."

"You come here so often now that Selene might think I am always doing something wrong. I’ve not long gotten married and you’ve constantly brought nonsense to my door. What is it this time?" Xavier asked, searching for the woman Selene once called a friend.

Eugene turned around to see who Xavier was looking for. "I can’t help that there are always accusations against you and your wife. You’ll be happy to know that it isn’t the man you are thinking of this time."

Xavier knew that Fiona was close by. Did they honestly think he wouldn’t spot her?

"There’s another accusation that you had something to do with the disappearance of Oliver Carleton. His wife is adamant that you had a hand in it. I will say now that we don’t have any proof but we still need to address it," said Eugene.

"Why does it feel like you come running here whenever someone whispers my name? It is getting old, Eugene. Find something better to do with your time. I am not the man you should bother," Xavier gave his final warning.

"Unfortunately, it is a sensitive time in the town with all the attacks. I must look into everything and since others are afraid of you, I am the one always sent. Don’t act like you do not enjoy seeing that it is me at your gates," Eugene said, certain Xavier was fond of him by now.

Selene knew from Xavier’s unamused expression that what Eugene believed Xavier felt was far from the truth.

"How many other ways must I say I dislike you for you to understand it?" Xavier asked.

"As many other ways as you can think of. Now, where can I find Oliver? I was told you have more of a relationship with Oliver than Lord Blackthorn did," Eugene said, turning his attention to Selene.

Since her marriage to Xavier, Selene has been in trouble. Eugene is yet to figure out if the town has something against her because of the past or if she was trouble like the man beside her.

"I once had a friendship with Oliver," Selene replied.

"Had? Did you say that because he is no more?" Eugene probed. It might be hard to trip up Xavier but he was confident he would be better against Selene.

"I said had because our friendship ended some time ago. I’m sure his wife Fiona came to you about us. She accused us hours ago and I was the one who advised her to go to the guards," Selene responded.

"Hmm. I wasn’t told that she came here," Eugene said, finding that to be suspicious.

All that Eugene knew was that the lady had trouble with Selene and suspected it was taken out on her husband. He did not enjoy it when he wasn’t given the full story.

"Do you mind telling me about her visit? This was something she failed to mention to me," said Eugene.

"She came to speak about our friendship and how she had been going around the town saying I had an affair. I said I understood why she followed his lead but our friendship could not go on. Then she informed me that he was missing and accused me," Selene told the story.

"I see. Since they were the ones behind your current gossip, it is easy to see why she would suspect you. If you cared for Fiona more it is understandable why it would be harder for you to do something to her. It doesn’t look good but again, I will need more proof so don’t worry," said Eugene.

Eugene believed it was more Xavier’s doing than Selene but he was curious about the lady. He refused to believe there wasn’t another side to the innocent face he was seeing now.

After all, Selene was married to Xavier Blackthorn.

"I can see how you would think that but there is quite a lot said about me around the town. I don’t have any time to go after everyone speaking as I am trying to settle in on the estate. While you might think Fiona is different because we were close, I have ignored others who I was once close with. Nothing is new here," said Selene.

"Yes well-"

"The people I was close to before my parents’ death are alive, are they not? They said more foul things than Fiona did and I left them be because I had no time for it. Instead of coming to us with these accusations, I would love your help to get my relatives out of the home left for me. Or is your focus on taking my husband from my side?" Selene asked, frustrated.

Eugene glanced at Xavier who was smiling for some reason. He would never understand Xavier. ". There is someone else who will deal with that matter of your family home for you. I apologise for our constant visits but we cannot ignore what is brought to us."

Selene sighed. "She said something about him not returning last night. I was here last night with Xavier after attending a social gathering with ladies from around the town. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a good talk with those women for them to speak the truth about my time there."

Selene continued, "I know after what they said my parents did that it is easy to paint me as someone vile but that is hardly the case. When you succeed at punishing my ex-husband for killing my maid then you may come back here. As for now, I have nothing more to say to you.’

Selene grabbed Xavier’s hand to take him away from the gate. Xavier did not need to speak to anyone. He had done more than enough for her.

"I am not done yet," said Eugene.

"We are done. A lord doesn’t have time to spare standing at his gates like this and no, we shall not invite you in. You said you did not have proof and only wanted to speak. We have spoken," Selene said, done with the conversation.

"You mustn’t let them go in."

"Who let her out of their hold?" Eugene muttered, annoyed that Fiona was coming forward. He instructed her to stay out of sight. "You must go back."

"This is her revenge for what I said about her. It was all lies. I confess to that," Fiona admitted her wrongdoings. "I will tell the town that I have lied. I only want Oliver to return home. Even the coachman is missing so I don’t have any answers. You must return him to me."

’We cannot return who we do not have," Selene replied.

Fiona feared the worst. It was all fun and games for Selene but this was her life. What was she to do without her husband? What she did was wrong but to kill Oliver was taking it a step too far.

Fiona tried to fight her way past the guards but they blocked her path.

Eugene secretly ordered his men to move so he could witness if the tearful conversation between women would reveal the truth.
