Chapter 154: Be Honest With Her?
Chapter 154: Be Honest With Her?
After their conversation about Abigail’s ex-fiancé, Rosa felt terrible for making Abigail appear sad and angry.
"Ugh, sorry, dear. I won’t talk about him anymore. He’s not worth discussing!"
"Thank you, Aunty Rosa..." Abigail smiled awkwardly. She wasn’t sure how to react and started to worry that Sawyer might feel jealous or uncomfortable if they talked about Ryland—he was standing nearby but could still hear their conversation.
"Oh, right, dear... I wanted to let you know about the CCTV footage you requested. I’ve already asked my friend at the hospital to give you access to it. However, they cannot allow you to see it."
Abigail silently took a deep breath. Even though she had anticipated their refusal, she was still disappointed to hear it confirmed.
After noticing Abigail’s disappointment, Rosa continued: "They said, ’If you still want to see the CCTV footage, you must file a police report. If you can show them the police report and a warrant, they can not refuse your request to access the footage.’"
"I understand, Aunty. Thank you for your help. I’ll find another way to find out who paid for Grandma’s hospital bills."
Abigail didn’t chat with Nurse Rosa for long; after discussing the CCTV footage, she briefly asked about her grandmother’s health condition before walking to her grandmother’s room.
...
Sawyer, who overheard Abigail’s conversation with Nurse Rosa, was surprised that she wanted to find out who had paid her grandma’s hospital bill.
Instantly, his mind flashed back to a few weeks before when he had asked Ethan to erase all evidence of his payment for the bill. He didn’t want Abigail to find out it was him.
However, seeing how disappointed Abigail was now made him hesitate.
’Should I be honest with her? But what if she gets angry with me?’ Sawyer thought to himself. He feared that Abigail would be upset because, at that time, they had no relationship—neither friends nor lovers.
Trying to lighten her mood, he smiled and asked, "Is everything alright? Why do you look so distressed, Abby?"
Abigail halted again and faced him. She glanced around the corridor to ensure they were alone before returning to Sawyer.
"Yes. You remember my grandma had surgery last month?" she asked.
He nodded. "Mmm, I remember. What happened?"
Abigail took a deep breath before continuing, "Well, something strange happened at that time. When I plan to pay my grandma’s hospital bill, someone has already paid it."
Sawyer remained silent, allowing her to finish her thoughts.
"I tried to find out who paid it, so I asked Aunty Rosa to request the hospital show me the CCTV footage from when that person settled the bill."
Sawyer felt increasingly puzzled, torn between revealing the truth and keeping it to himself. But seeing her annoyance, he realized how troubled she was about the situation—she might even be angry with him if he kept silent.
After a few moments, he gathered his courage to ask, "Abby, that’s good, right? Someone paid for your grandma’s expenses. You don’t have to worry about money anymore?"
Abigail frowned at his words. What he said was indeed correct. While she felt relieved at that moment, she was also troubled by Ryland’s claim that he was the one who settled the bill.
"I’m sorry if my words hurt you, Abby. I just can’t—"
"Sawyer, no! I’m not hurt or offended. The truth is I felt relieved when I learned the hospital fee had been paid. At that time, I didn’t have enough money to settle it..."
She paused, taking a deep breath to ease the tightening in her heart as she recalled how dire her situation had been.
Sawyer felt a twinge of sadness as he looked into her eyes. He didn’t know what to say; he could only express his sympathy through his gaze.
Abigail continued when she saw Sawyer’s frown and concern. "However, I’m worried someone might use this situation against me. I mean, someone might try to blackmail me again."
She still feels angry when she remembers what Ryland did that time—using the excuse of her grandmother’s hospital bill to drag her into meeting Andy Bennet. Fortunately, she uncovered his lie quickly so she wouldn’t have to continue crossing paths with Ryland.
"Again?" Sawyer was taken aback when he heard that.
"Hmm, again—" Abigail hesitated to share more about Ryland, who had manipulated her into following his request by claiming he was paying her grandmother’s hospital bill. To this day, she still feels furious when she thinks about it.
Seeing Abigail’s reluctance to speak, Sawyer’s curiosity deepened.
"Abby, did someone try to harm you? Can you please tell me what happened?" Sawyer asked. He needed to hear her story so he could be honest with her about the fact that he had paid her grandmother’s medical fees.
"A few days after my grandmother was discharged from the hospital, I was still completely unclear about who had paid the hospital bill," Abigail explained. "Then, one day, Ryland suddenly admitted that he was the one who had paid it off." Her hands clenched as she felt heartache.
Sawyer was shocked to hear this. His hands, which held the shopping bags, tightened into fists, anger coursing through him as he realized that Ryland was despicable.
"Ryland used that excuse to force me to meet with the company’s client. I had no choice but to agree because I believed him," Abigail explained.
Sawyer gritted his teeth in silence. "That man needs to be taught a lesson. Abby, let me take care of him!" he urged.
Abigail smiled at Sawyer, noting his darkened expression. It was as if a storm raged inside him, and his anger flashed in his eyes. Slowly, she lifted her hand to touch his cheek, trying to calm his fury with a gentle gesture.
"No need for that. After meeting with the client, I discovered that Ryland wasn’t the one who paid the hospital bill," Abigail chuckled. "I called the client and asked him to terminate his contract with Urbangrid. It was purely speculation from me. Fortunately, he agreed to my request..."
