Chapter 149: His Enemies Would Hurt Her
Abigail and Sawyer continued their conversation, and after some time, Abigail remembered her legal battle with Kian Blake. She had been in the dark about it because Sawyer seemed to avoid discussing the case, likely to spare her any stress.
However, Abigail felt it was time to bring it up, as she needed to respond to Andy Bennet about the lawyer fee.
"Sawyer, what about my case? The news on the internet is starting to worry me," she asked.
Sawyer’s expression darkened when the topic was mentioned. He felt anger toward Kian Blake every time he heard about the case.
"Regarding the news, I have already instructed my team to manage the situation. All online articles mentioning Crimson Leaf Cafe will be removed, and only Kian Blake’s actions will be exposed as those of a sexual predator. And Kian Blake’s status will soon be upgraded to that of a perpetrator. We have gathered sufficient evidence to ensure he remains locked in jail for a long time," Sawyer explained.
After hearing Sawyer’s explanation, Abigail felt slightly relieved.
However, deep in her heart, she was still anxious to learn that Kian was still in the hospital. She worried that he might escape and seek revenge on her.
Now, she regretted that she had hurt Kian so severely. "I shouldn’t have broken his bones. That scum must be using that excuse to avoid jail, right?" she asked.
"Yes, he is doing that. But don’t worry; I will ensure he returns to the police station soon." Sawyer had ordered someone to do something about Kian’s health report so it would state that he could attend the investigation at the police station.
"I’m glad to hear that. I won’t feel at ease until he’s locked behind bars."
"Yeah, I feel the same..." Sawyer agreed. He sighed before adding, "I remember you mentioned you learned martial arts, which is why you can subdue him. What kind of martial art do you practice?"
"Tae Kwon do. I’m a dan black belt," Abigail said, pausing momentarily when she noticed Sawyer gasping in surprise. "Well, there’s no need to be shocked about that, Sawyer," she added with a laugh.
"You’re awesome, Abby!" he exclaimed.
"I only practice for exercise and to learn how to defend myself. I’ve never really used my moves to fight in real life. I only had sparring matches when I was still working with Urbangrid Innovation. What happened in the café that night was my first real experience with a fight. That’s why I couldn’t gauge my strength when I kicked Kian. I assume the worst, so I don’t hold back my maximum power. And foolishly slammed my head against him..."
"I’m really impressed by your courage," Sawyer said, unable to hold back his admiration. "Knowing that you can fight makes me feel relieved. I no longer worry about someone hurting you because you can protect yourself, Abby..."
Abigail’s eyes lit up at his words, and suddenly, something clicked in her mind. "Sawyer, speaking of that, you admit I can take care of myself, right?"
"Yes," Sawyer answered quickly.
"That’s great! Well, like I mentioned this morning, I don’t need a bodyguard or a driver to accompany me, Sawyer."
Sawyer immediately understood her intent and felt a bitter laugh forming inside him as he waited for her to continue.
"Can you cancel your plan to have Vincent guard me? I’m not used to having someone follow me, and it feels very uncomfortable," Abigail tried again to convince him.
"Abby, I’m sorry if Vincent makes you feel uncomfortable." Sawyer felt terrible hearing her words, but he had no choice. He had to do this for her safety and his peace of mind.
He continued, "However, Vincent needs to be near you to ensure your safety. I know this is new for you, and you don’t like it, but this is for your own good, Abby..."
Abigail didn’t respond immediately. Her mind was filled with questions about why Sawyer was so concerned about her safety.
"Please don’t be upset with me, Abby. I’m just concerned that what happened to you that night could happen again or that someone on the street with malicious intentions might try to harm you..."
"I’m not upset with you," Abigail smiled before continuing, "but I’m curious about why you’re so worried someone will hurt me. Do you have enemies out there?" She finally expressed her thoughts.
Abigail noticed Sawyer’s expression slowly turned tense. She became more confident that she guessed correctly: ’Sawyer was so concerned because his enemy would hurt me.’
Sawyer chuckled before finally answering, "If I said yes, would you believe me?"
"I believe you," Abigail admitted. After hearing his childhood story, she could guess who his mortal enemy might be.
"I hope you’re not afraid to know about it, Abby," Sawyer asked anxiously. When he saw her looking calm, he continued, "Although not many people know who I am, a few do, and they hate me. I never worried about them coming after me, but I’m concerned that they might come after you if they find out about you..."
Abigail’s heart raced at the thought of Sawyer’s enemy harming her. For someone like Kian, maybe she could handle it on her own. But if the people Sawyer mentioned showed up, she might be unable to face them alone.
"One of them is your big brother?" she asked, trying to confirm her suspicions.
"Oh yeah... of course. He’s the number one person who wanted me dead the moment he found out I existed. From childhood until now, I have never had a peaceful conversation whenever we meet." Sawyer said. A glint appeared in his eyes as he imagined facing his enemy and his eldest brother.
"Sawyer, I’m sorry to hear that..."
"There’s no need to feel that way. Even though he hates me, he can’t touch me. My real concern is if he finds out about you, he might try to use you to get his way on me." Sawyer smiled at her.
This was one of the reasons Sawyer never wanted to start a relationship—having someone he loved would only be his weakness.
However, after meeting Abigail that day, his perspective began to change. He no longer cared about his worries; all he wanted at that moment was to pursue Abigail to become his woman.
