Chapter 136: Eager To Learn More About Sawyer

Chapter 136: Eager To Learn More About Sawyer

No wonder Abigail looked so happy; she had once heard Nathaniel Jones tell an embarrassing story about Sawyer when he was little.

"Oh, Sawyer dear, come here and join us," Martha said excitedly when she spotted him standing in the doorway.

Sawyer, "..."

"Your grandfather told the story of when you got your first horse and insisted on riding it immediately. And the first thing that happened when you rode was that it was being thrown into a puddle by the horse." Martha laughed as she repeated the story.

"Yes, Sawyer, it was so hilarious to recall those wonderful times when you were a shy and cute young boy with fearlessness in his eyes until the horse threw you off his back. Since then, you have become a cautious boy who hated horses and hesitated to take riding lessons, but a cute boy still. Do you remember?" Nathaniel chimed in, still chuckling happily.

Sawyer, "..."

How is he supposed to react to that undeniable fact? He couldn’t do anything but rendered speechless.

Abigail struggled to hold back her laughter. She found the story amusing, not because of the story itself, but because she saw Sawyer’s sour expression. It was clear how upset he was.

"Sawyer, don’t be angry. Abigail is actually proud of you; I told her you’ve been good at marksmanship since you were little," Martha said, trying to cheer up her sulky grandson.

"That’s right, Sawyer. I’m impressed to know that. You should show me how good you are at shooting," Abigail said, trying to cheer him up, aware that his mood had fallen below zero.

"Exactly! Sawyer, you need to show Abigail..." Nathaniel chimed in, smiling at his grandson before turning to Abigail. "Abigail, my grandson, is a talented shooter. I wanted him to pursue a career in shooting sports, but his father disagreed. Instead, he wanted him to join the army and serve under his uncle..."

Abigail was once again taken aback. She had never known that Sawyer had any military involvement. She felt compelled to learn everything about him for the first time: his childhood, teenage years, and everything he had experienced before they met.

Since Abigail started dating Sawyer, she rarely heard him tell her about his family details. Instead, she is the one who opens up about her struggles living with the Swan family.

After a lovely dinner with Martha and Nathaniel, Sawyer was no longer as sulky as he had been before. He could see how much Abigail enjoyed interacting with his grandparents.

Feeling relaxed, he immediately forgot about his plan to leave his grandparents’ house.

"Sawyer, go bring Abigail to rest in your bedroom," Martha suggested excitedly. "After you rest, you can go home, or would you like to sleep here? I could ask someone to prepare clothes for Abigail!" Her eyes sparkled with enthusiasm.

"No, Grandma, we will go home," Sawyer quickly refused. "Abby needs to work tomorrow." He was only making a random excuse.

Abigail, "...."

’Gosh, I no longer have a job...’ She silently laughs inwardly.

The light in Martha’s eyes slowly dimmed, but her smile remained as she looked at Abigail. "Alright, but you must show Abigail your messy bedroom upstairs."

Sawyer glanced at Abigail. "Abby, do you want to go upstairs and check out my room?"

Abigail nodded enthusiastically. "Yes!" she replied with excitement.

She was eager to learn more about him. Sawyer rarely talked about his family, and she sensed his dislike for his father and brother, Harvey Jones.

...

On the third floor,

After they stepped out of the elevator, Sawyer paused. He glanced at Abigail, who stood beside him and looked around at the vast activity room.

Taking her hand, they walked to one of the wooden doors in the corner. He explained, "These three floors are actually for my grandparents’ grandchildren when we visit during the holidays. However, I’m the only one with a bedroom here because all my siblings and cousins prefer to stay in the guest bedrooms downstairs or choose not to stay overnight."

Curious, Abigail looked at him and asked, "Why don’t they spend the night here?"

"I’m not sure. Maybe it’s because my parents’ and uncle’s houses are only a five-minute drive away," he replied. He stopped before opening the door and gestured for her to enter first. "This is my bedroom..."

Abigail was surprised to see how neat and clean the room looked as if it had been tidied and dusted daily.

"A maid cleans it daily, even though I rarely come," Sawyer explained. "I only visit when my grandparents insist I stay overnight or for special occasions."

"No wonder it looks so neat, and the furniture appears brand new," she remarked.

"Yes, they sometimes change the furniture for me. They said they don’t want to make me bored with the room." Sawyer said, amused as he recalled how his grandmother would update the decor every three years.

The room was similar to Sawyer’s bedroom in his house. Still, the furniture was dominated by wood, and the primary colors were white and brown. In Sawyer’s home, gray and natural colors were the most dominant.

Abigail walked inside and looked around. She noticed a few items on the console table near the sofa in the corner.

A gold photo frame caught her attention. It featured a boy with a beautiful woman with long black hair. Abigail doubted this woman was his mother, as Mrs. Jones, whom she usually saw in the news, looked very different from the woman in the photo.

Abigail also believed the woman in the picture couldn’t be Grandma Martha because she looked so young. Curious about the woman’s identity, she turned to Sawyer.

She saw him sitting on the sofa, turning off the television as he searched for a movie. "Sawyer, is this you and your...?" she asked.

Sawyer narrowed his eyes as he glanced at the photo frame in her hand.

"Oh, that’s my mom and me when I was five years old..." he replied before refocusing on the television screen.

Abigail frowned as she looked at the picture again. She felt confused because the woman in the photo didn’t resemble Walter Jones’s wife.
