Chapter 137: My Childhood Felt Like Hell
Abigail frowned as she looked at the picture again. She felt confused because the woman in the photo didn’t resemble Walter Jones’s wife.
"Abby, come join me! Let’s watch a movie before we head home," Sawyer called, distracting Abigail from her thoughts.
She nodded, set the photo frame back down, and sat beside Sawyer. She tried to focus on the movie he had chosen. Still, after a few minutes, her curiosity about his mother grew. Some questions, and they may be delicate questions, filled her mind.
Abigail’s gaze had shifted from the television to him.
Noticing her disinterest in the movie, Sawyer glanced over and asked, "Did you not like the film? What kinds of movies do you prefer? Romance? Horror? Thriller? Or maybe a superhero movie?"
She smiled at him and shook her head. "I’m not really interested in watching movies right now because I want to ask you something. Sawyer... can I ask you?"
Sawyer took his time responding, gently placing his hand on her warm cheek and rubbing it affectionately. His eyes traveled from her inviting cherry lips to her delicate nose, finally settling on her beautiful gray eyes. He noticed a flicker of confusion in her gaze.
A loving smile spread across his lips as he said, "Since when do you need my permission to ask? You can ask me anything, Abby. I promise I will answer honestly..."
Abigail blushed at his sweet words, and his warm touch quickened her heartbeat.
"So, what is it? Why do you look like something is bugging your mind?" he inquired.
"Yeah. And I’m sorry for asking this, but I couldn’t help it. It’s about the picture of you and the woman you said is your mother. Am I hearing that right?" Abigail asked, expressing her confusion.
"Yes, she is my mother. Why did you ask?" Sawyer replied, a frown crossing his face. "Do you doubt me? Well, I don’t blame you. My resemblance to her might not be obvious because I inherited many of my father’s traits, so I look more like him..." He chuckled, playfully addressing her concerns.
Abigail let out a silent sigh. She hadn’t intended to ask Sawyer about his mother’s similarities. Still, she wanted to know why the woman in the picture wasn’t Charlotte Morgan, his father’s wife. However, she hesitated because she worried her question would sound impolite.
"I’m sorry, Sawyer, but can I ask you this? Why is that woman different from your father’s wife, Ms. Charlotte Morgan?" Abigail finally expressed her confusion. From what she had read in the news, Walter Jones only had one wife—Charlotte Morgan—but they had divorced long ago. There had been no news of Walter remarrying.
Sawyer’s expression changed slowly. He placed the television remote on the table and turned to look at Abigail calmly.
After taking a few deep breaths, he replied, "Abby, there are many things I want to tell you, but it’s hard to start because this is a family disgrace that has been tightly kept, and it’s embarrassing to share." He stopped for a moment when he saw Abigail looking surprised.
"Sawyer, I’m really sorry if I offended you because my question sounds rude and out of place. You don’t have to answer it." Abigail smiled weakly. She didn’t want him to feel pressured or uncomfortable by her question.
A small smile appeared on the corner of his lips as he observed how panicked Abigail was.
"It’s fine, Abby. You have the right to know about this because you will be an inseparable part of my life until death do us part. And with your intelligence, I’m pretty sure you will find it out sooner rather than later. So, in the end, you will discover the dark secret of my family..." he said while taking her hands.
Abigail felt a wave of nervousness wash over her at his words.
’What is this bitter and disgraced story that has made Sawyer look deeply hurt and sad?’ she wondered.
"I am not Charlotte Morgan’s biological son. My father had me with another woman—my mom—while he was still legally married to Charlotte Morgan," Sawyer said, letting out a deep sigh as he reflected on his childhood, which was filled with drama.
"My biological mother’s name is Hannah Walker. She is currently in Country M with my father. Aah, Walter Jones is indeed my dad; we share similar features, and a DNA test confirmed our relationship before he brought me into the Jones family." He chuckled lightly.
Abigail was taken aback by what she heard but said nothing, waiting for him to continue.
"Because of my father’s forbidden relationship with my mom, my life, from childhood through my teenage years and even now, feels like hell. You know my dad’s legal wife has two children, right?"
"Yes...your siblings," she replied.
"My older brother’s name is Harvey. He is now thirty-nine years old, and my sister Angela is two years older than me. At one point, my father insisted on bringing me into the Jones family, but his wife, Charlotte, firmly refused. She even threatened to divorce him and take away half of his wealth if he persisted. And, of course, her son and daughter also hated me."
Sawyer shook his head with a wry smile as he recalled the turmoil of his past.
"I don’t know what my father did, but eventually, his legal wife agreed to accept me. I became her legal son when I was about five years old. So, by law, my mother is Charlotte Morgan."
Abigail listened quietly, her gaze full of sympathy for Sawyer as he shared his story.
Sawyer gently squeezed Abigail’s hand before saying, "Abby, the woman in the picture was my birth mother."
"She is beautiful, Sawyer," Abigail said sincerely.
"Yes, she is. I heard from my dad that my mom was his lover. But Grandpa forced him to marry Charlotte Morgan for business reasons. They never loved each other."
Abigail was stunned.
"You already heard that my father and Charlotte Morgan divorced long ago?"
"Yes, I read about it in the news," Abigail responded.
