Chapter 59: Cornered

Dapper lost all sense of composure; he couldn’t believe how completely he was left in the dust. Ahead, he saw the white-haired boy standing at the end of the road leading to the Campus, casually tapping his foot against the ground.

Dapper and the rest of the students eventually caught up and laid eyes on him. He was clearly a teenager too, standing about six feet tall. He had two dangling earrings just like Dapper and a sharp jawline with a strikingly handsome face. Girls were already swarming him, which only served to piss Dapper off. More and more students, including those who’d been bitten by the hellhounds, began to gather. Apparently, once enough people reached the finish line, Digos called the hellhounds back.

"Hey, Dapper, you look so fucking pissed, huh?" a familiar voice said behind him. Dapper turned his head and saw Shinro and Riley approaching. Their faces were swollen, and visible bite marks covered their legs, evident through their tattered clothes.

"Hey guys, how are you holding up?" Dapper asked, exchanging a handshake with Shinro. When he reached for Riley, she blushed as their hands met.

’What’s up with her?’

"Man, I’m hanging in there. We’ve been looking for you in the crowd. Riley wouldn’t let me rest until we found you," Shinro said, scratching his head.

"I-I didn’t say that!" Riley quickly denied, her face turning crimson.

"You both got bitten, huh? But it looks like the wounds are healing," Dapper noted, studying the marks.

"It hurts like hell! And they didn’t just bite, we got smacked in the face with their damn paws too," Shinro complained, his mouth still slightly swollen.

"We’re just mages! How do they expect us to outrun those things?" Riley added, clutching her staff tightly.

"I keep telling you both, stop using being a mage as an excuse for being weak. What’s the point of having a massive Mana pool if you die before casting a spell?" Dapper said, his tone firm. Shinro and Riley both lowered their heads.

"Besides... I didn’t know someone like him was among us," Dapper continued, looking toward the white-haired boy. "He’s one of those gifted ones, people blessed with insane power without effort. Monkeys like us can’t relate," he muttered, clenching his fists. His thoughts drifted to the reality of his Rankless system, the need to constantly fuck just to fulfill conditions and unlock system privileges. He also had to kill monsters and train his body nonstop. Even though he had a cheat system, it came with a heavy price.

"That guy’s crazy handsome too, just like you, Dapper. You calling yourself a monkey? Come on. With a face like that, you can bag some rich aristocrat girl. We’re the actual monkeys here," Shinro joked with a laugh.

"D-Dapper is way more handsome than him! That guy is full of himself!" Riley suddenly said with a pout.

"Huh? Do you have a crush on Dapper or something?" Shinro teased. "Girl, stop dreaming! A guy like him won’t marry a plain girl like you. Reality will hit you hard when you end up married to a monkey like me someday, hahaha!"

Dapper let out a quiet chuckle, amused by the banter. He decided to add fuel to the fire.

"I actually have two wives," Dapper said in a low voice.

"...."

Shinro and Riley went silent. Riley’s eyes shimmered as if she were on the verge of tears. But then Dapper spoke again.

"I love women. I don’t mind having more, hehe," he added with a small giggle.

Riley’s expression shifted and brightened, blooming into a small smile.

"So, you’re a pervert..." Riley muttered.

"Haa, yes. I love women with big breasts and thick asses. I also have a soft spot for girls with this size," Dapper said, gesturing toward Riley’s chest with his hands as if cupping something.

"Pervert!!" Shinro and Riley shouted at the same time, bursting into laughter right after.

"You’re probably married to some stinking rich aristocrats. I wonder why you even came to the military academy," Shinro said curiously.

"While it’s true they’re aristocrats, we’ve actually known each other since childhood. They’re sisters, and as for why I joined the academy... well, I have my reasons," Dapper said, slipping his hands into his pockets and glancing up at the sky.

"Romulus, you did well."

The sudden voice made Dapper and the others lift their heads. They saw Digos patting the white-haired boy on the shoulder.

"Thank you, Teacher," the boy said as he accepted the flute.

"Haha! I knew my disciple would win," Digos laughed, flashing his monstrous row of jagged teeth.

’So his name is Romulus... Was he hiding his power? Could it be speed-based?’ Dapper thought, then frowned. It felt like he and the rest had been used. Digos clearly planned this from the start.

"That bastard... He knew his disciple would win from the beginning," Shinro muttered under his breath, his fists clenched. Even Riley looked visibly annoyed.

"My big sister told me there’s a lot of competition between teacher disciples in the academy. I guess it already started... tch," Riley clicked her tongue.

"You mean that mean woman from yesterday?" Dapper asked.

"Yes, but she’s not really mean. She’s actually nice. Her other disciples treated me well too," Riley replied.

"Other disciples?" Dapper and Shinro echoed together.

"Yes. Teachers are allowed to pick one disciple each from year one to three. But this year, it looks like the real competition is among the first years. I mean, we’ve only just arrived, yet..." Riley said, trailing off as something caught her eye.

Digos was staring in their direction—no, at Dapper specifically.

"He’s looking at you. I swear, I don’t know why these teachers have something against you," Shinro muttered, prompting Dapper to glance over as well. As their eyes met, Digos quickly looked away.

"I don’t know... It’s not even like I have a teacher or mentor, unlike Riley," Dapper said with a shrug.

"I think I get it... Maybe it’s because of Deegan. He’s the strongest elite soldier, and he asked about you yesterday. Maybe word got around, and now the others think he wants you as a disciple," Shinro said thoughtfully.

Riley’s eyes widened like something just clicked in her head.

"What a load of crap. I’m not even interested in this whole disciple competition thing," Dapper scoffed, pointing to the side. "Look over there. They’re handing out uniforms."

A hovering bus was parked not far away, and students were lined up, receiving their academy uniforms.

Dapper returned to his dorm, and upon entering his room, he saw a woman seated on his reading chair, legs crossed, her jaw moving subtly as if chewing gum.

"Dapper Freeman, you’re back, huh? You’re one handsome freak," the woman said with a teasing wink.

She was a stunning blonde with an undeniably alluring figure, perfect tits that weren’t too big or too small, a curved ass, and thick thighs that tapered smoothly into shapely legs. She wore a white long-sleeved shirt, a very short skirt, and light stockings through which Dapper could clearly see her underwear from the way she was seated.

She took off her glasses, revealing emerald green eyes. Dapper was left speechless, she was the very definition of a baddie.

"Are you Lily? How did you get into my room?" Dapper asked, skeptical. If she got in easily, then his bed could be stolen just as easily.

"Now, now, show some respect. I’m a teacher, remember? Don’t worry, your lock’s not compromised. As a teacher, I accessed the server and cloned your keycard. So rest easy. Anyway... let’s get to business," Lily said, unbuttoning two buttons of her shirt, revealing the deep valley of her cleavage.

"Wait. I want to ask you something first," Dapper said firmly.

"Why did you accept this deal? I doubt it’s strictly for money. There’s no way someone like you would sleep with a student just for cash. Maybe others might, but you... my intuition says otherwise," Dapper added, his expression scrunched in suspicion.

"What are you implying?" Lily asked, her tone shifting.

"You know what I mean. Why are you really doing this? What’s your true aim?" Dapper pressed, his voice steady and sharp.

A slow, twisted smile crept across Lily’s face.

"Oh my, how can someone be this smart and hot at the same time? You saw through me, fufu. Since you’ve figured it out, you deserve to know," she said, her tone dropping into something more serious.

"You see... I’m a detective. I can sniff out the truth better than most. Teaching? That’s just a hobby to pass time. After the sudden rise of the Freeman family, my interest was piqued. They were good before, yes, but their recent success and uncanny business strategies were too suspicious for someone like me to ignore. During my investigation, I discovered the Freeman heiress and her sister both married the same man. Since then, everything changed for the family. The husband stayed out of the spotlight, almost like a ghost. But I could tell—he was the one pulling the strings."

Lily leaned forward, her emerald gaze locked on him.

"He could also cast magic and possessed traits typical of Combat-type system users. But the final detail? All the dots pointed that he was a Rankless system user. All signs led to you, Dapper Freeman."
