Chapter 58: Warmup

{Her name is Lily.}

"Lily? I don’t know her..." Dapper muttered as Ruth casually dropped the name.

{Yes, there are a lot of teachers in the military academy. As a freshman, you can’t know them all.}

Dapper was a bit surprised at how smoothly Ruth brought up something like this, especially knowing how jealous she usually was. Maybe she was slowly breaking out of her shell.

"How much did you spend?"

{Tee-hee, quite a lot. You know, the teachers in that academy are well-paid and have different endorsements, so they are basically rich. I just had to offer something irresistible. She’s going to satisfy you whenever you want. Thanks to you, we can now afford to live like this. Who knew there were levels to wealth.}

"I see..."

{She’s visiting you tomorrow, so make sure you give it to her good the first time. She was acting like it wasn’t a big deal, even saying a student’s dick won’t satisfy her, and it made me look like a fool wasting money.}

{Don’t forget to take your Impotence Potion, okay? I don’t want some opportunistic bitch getting pregnant by my husband. I wish I could do it myself.} Dapper could hear Belinda grumbling in the background.

{Sigh, at this point, won’t husband go impotent for real before he is even ready, with how much of that potion he’s taking?} Ruth added teasingly.

{Right... I’m worried too. I read the stuff has side effects if used too often. Maybe we should preserve our husband’s sperm, just in case.}

Listening to the sisters banter over the phone, Dapper felt a mix of embarrassment and frustration. Of course, he knew they were just teasing him, but the desperate longing of two baby-craving women was hard to miss. Still, he wasn’t in a rush. He had a plan.

"Hey, you two. Did you get on this call just to taunt me?" Dapper suddenly said, silencing them for a moment. Then, with a smirk, he continued, "Just wait, you two are getting pregnant real soon!" f|ree(w)ebn\o.vel.com

{Haaa~ I can’t wait to get knocked up and carry my baby.}

{Me too~}

Dapper resigned himself as they continued talking. Once the conversation turned to babies, there was no turning back. That’s all they would talk about until the end of the day.

While chatting with his wives, Dapper drifted off to sleep. On the other end, Belinda and Ruth’s soft snoring echoed through the phone.

---

The next morning, Dapper was jolted awake by a loud siren blaring just outside his dorm. He shot up with a jerk, Mana surging wildly through his body as his heart thudded rapidly in his chest. The shrill siren brought back memories of his past life, when he was around this age, trained in a mercenary camp to become a ruthless killer.

He heard loud, hurried footsteps storming down the dorm stairs, snapping him from his daze. With a tired sigh, he quickly dressed and splashed water on his face, preparing for whatever madness was coming next.

He stepped out of the room and joined the rest of the first-year students. The siren was still blaring loudly, and they were all heading toward a summoning ground not far from the dormitories. Dapper wasn’t sure how or why the first-years knew that was their destination, but he followed them regardless.

He tried to spot Shinro and Riley in the crowd, but for some reason, he couldn’t find either of them. It even felt like there were way more first-years than he originally thought, making him wonder if another batch had been enlisted apart from the ones from yesterday.

Soon, they arrived at a massive summoning ground and were greeted by the sight of a burly, towering man. Up close, he looked almost like a giant, easily over seven feet tall, with fingers thicker than an average man’s wrist. His face was covered in a thick brown beard, and one of his eyes was hidden behind an eye patch, which made his expression unreadable. He wore a blue beret and matching blue uniform, the signature outfit of the military elites.

His one visible eye scanned the students, and suddenly, he flashed a grin. Upon seeing his teeth, several students at the front nearly wet themselves, including Dapper. The man’s teeth were jagged and sharp like a monster’s, each one oversized and inhuman.

"My name is Digos, a proud teacher of the military academy and one of the strongest elite soldiers of the empire!" Digos boomed, his chest puffed as his deep voice echoed through the crowd.

’Why do most of the teachers’ names start with D?’ Dapper thought to himself, still glancing around the crowd for Riley and Shinro with no luck.

"I want to congratulate everyone here for being enlisted into the military academy! From this point on, every one of you is guaranteed to graduate as elites! However..." Digos paused, his gaze turning sharp. "While being an elite sounds glorious, there are ranks within the elite. Those who graduate in flying colors will be recognized by the empire and honored at the ceremony. Those who fail to meet the standard will graduate without honors, barely ranked above foot soldiers. All you’ll have is the uniform to brag about!"

"If you don’t want to be that kind of loser, then prove yourself worthy! Show us that you deserve to be called an elite soldier!!" Digos roared, and the crowd roared back, clapping and shouting in approval.

"This morning, we begin with an endurance test. Just a warm-up to show that more awaits. There’s a reason we are called elite soldiers," Digos said with a smirk. Then suddenly, the atmosphere shifted as the air rippled and dog-like monsters began falling out of thin air behind him.

Their numbers multiplied rapidly, growing into the hundreds. The monsters were pitch black, with jagged, oversized teeth that barely fit in their mouths. Slimy drool spilled from their jaws, and they emitted a foul stench that caused several students to gag and nearly vomit.

"These are Rank–1 Hellhounds. You might think they’re low-level monsters, but these bastards are fast as hell and trust me, you don’t want to get bitten by one," Digos said with a wicked grin stretching across his face. "Here’s the catch; all of you will run down that road leading to the Campus. It’s about two miles long. While running, these monsters will chase you. You’re not allowed to kill them, and they’re also not allowed to kill you. However, if one or more of them catches you... you’ll get bitten. And trust me, even a bite from a low-level hellhound will make you wish you were dead."

"Also," Digos continued, holding up a shiny object, "the first person to finish the race gets a reward. This," he said, raising a silver flute, "is a monster gear crafted from the core of a Rank-3 Hellhound. It allows the user to summon Rank-1 or even Rank-2 hellhounds depending on the Mana you pour into it. Whoever wins this race gets the flute." He put it away and lit a cigarette casually.

Everyone’s eyes lit up at once, the gleam of greed and desire spreading through the crowd.

’I need to win this,’ Dapper thought, his eyes narrowed with determination. ’That flute can summon and even control Rank-2 Hellhounds depending on the user’s Mana pool. It’s too valuable to pass up. Besides, I don’t want to get bitten.’

"The race begins now!" Digos bellowed, blowing his whistle. Instantly, the students sprang into action, sprinting down the road toward the Campus. Dapper glanced back, there was no movement from the hounds yet. It was a head start.

But just as expected, seconds later, the dogs lunged forward, chasing after the students. Dapper turned his head to see them blitzing forward, far faster than expected, catching up within moments. Screams and cries rang through the air as some students were pinned down and bitten.

Seeing the chaos unfold, Dapper stopped looking back and focused ahead, running at full speed. In this world, even average people could clock around fifty miles per hour, a feat unheard of in his previous life. Luckily, he’d raised his agility stat before coming to the academy. Now, he could run over a hundred miles per hour. Yet, even that wasn’t enough. The hellhounds were still closing in, tearing down those behind him.

’Shit. Shit. Why is one running right beside me?!’ Dapper thought as he noticed a hellhound keeping pace, baring its fangs at him.

"The rule says we can’t kill you. But nobody said we can’t beat the shit out of you!" Dapper roared, spinning around mid-run and slamming his leg into the hellhound. It rolled across the ground, howling.

Unfortunately, that only made things worse. The others turned their attention toward him.

’Fuck. The Campus is right ahead, but now I’ve got these bastards gunning for me,’ Dapper thought as the buildings came into view. Only around forty students were ahead of him. At his current pace, there was no way he could overtake them.

Suddenly, a smirk appeared on his face. "Sorry, guys. I need that flute." Then Dapper activated his skill—Sprint.

In an instant, he shot forward like a bullet, bypassing dozens of students with explosive speed. Even though the skill only lasted five seconds, it was enough, he was at the very front. He could already see the Campus gate.

But just as he was about to cross, a white-haired boy blurred past him like a streak of lightning, dust whipping up behind him. All Dapper saw was the smug grin on the boy’s face before he vanished ahead.

Shock coursed through Dapper’s entire body.
