Alpha's Rejected Mate Returns as Queen -
Chapter 746: The Barrier
Chapter 746: The Barrier
Yarin's POV:
Regarding the potential future, Mom was well aware and educated us accordingly.
"I know many nobles and Alphas talk behind my back, calling me foolish, saying that I'm destroying the foundation. When all the Alphas disappear, the next in line will be the Oromalivira Family.
"But they don't understand that this is the way to survive. Clinging to centralized power is like clutching a fragile piece of driftwood in the ocean. Since you know that the waves will eventually capsize you, why turn a blind eye to the massive ship beside you?
"Our family can't always be the ones in power. Countless historical stories have already proven the transferability of power.
"So I think we need to prepare for the future starting now. When the time comes, at least our family will have options become a symbol or step down and retire. These are good ways to preserve the Oromalivira Family's thousand-year honor, transitioning from nobles to royals. Then, we can proudly say that we've lived up to the goddess, our ancestors, and the werewolf pack."
The first time I heard all this, there was no doubt I was shocked. In my mind, the royal family was just the royal family. How could it be overturned? How could it disappear? The only things that could shake us were conspiracies and a lack of heirs.
However, Mom's words made me realize that those ancient royal families that vanished due to conspiracies or a lack of heirs were at best losers in power struggles. They lost power, but the power didn't disappear. It was waiting for the next ruler to take the reins.
But what do we do when power truly disappeared one day? Without conspiracies or a lack of heirs, we would be standing there alone, looking around in bewilderment, searching in vain. But lost power never returns.
When that time comes, we will discover that we didn't possess power; power possessed us. It's fair and impartial, riding the currents. Eventually, it will pass into someone else's hands with the tides of time.
But discovering the true essence of power after it was gone would be too late. The Oromalivira Family would truly be powerless then, destined to be the first blood sacrificed to the new era.
What Mom was doing was avoiding that outcome. The Spring Rain Pack was her first step, but she hadn't thought so far ahead then. She had been considering centralizing royal power. Now looking back, it was clear that all signs were there. Even if there were thoughts of deviation, actions ultimately lead toward the preordained future.
In any case, back to Sivir Academy.
After the morning opening ceremony, classes began in the afternoon. It wasn't really formal classes, just a chance for students and teachers to get to know each other. Older students from the volunteer team led the newcomers around the school facilities and helped boarders find their dorms. Heller and I were day students, so we didn't have to deal with dormitory matters. During this time, I noticed Cynthia had been silent all along. I asked, "What's wrong? Do you really want to come to school too? Then tell Mom and Dad you don't want homeschooling. Sivir Academy is great, and they trust it. They'll agree."
But Cynthia just said, "No, actually, I'm not that interested in school. I still prefer staying at home. I haven't even gone to the Silver Moon Pack."
I had wanted to hang out with Eden for a while, but he disappeared after the opening ceremony. Maybe he didn't like the noisy environment and returned to the classroom early. Beside me, Heller was looking somewhat forlornly at the roofs emerging from the trees not far away. That was the dormitory for the middle school section of Sivir Academy.
His eyes had mostly recovered, but he wasn't happy about being unable to board. Yet, due to the foolish things we did in the Silver Moon Pack, Mom hadn't allowed us to be out of her sight.
In truth, even if there hadn't been the incident of 'running away from home', we still wouldn't have been eligible to board. Heller's eyes were sometimes good, sometimes bad, and I had my own entanglements with demons. We were like time bombs at school, a danger to both the school and ourselves.
After the school tour, there wasn't much else to do in the afternoon. Classrooms were left for students to interact freely. The new students were nervously and curiously chatting with those around them. This made Heller and me stand out even more starkly in our empty surroundings.
There were also some noble offspring in the class. Aside from politely and somewhat nervously greeting us-hardly even conversing-no one dared to approach us.
Yes, they didn't dare. The class division was clearly exposed. As the pinnacle of the werewolf pack, Heller and I seemed so out of place in the classroom.
"This is a bit different from what I expected..." Heller seemed a bit disheartened.
Originally, he didn't like interacting with strangers, and his anticipation of campus life came from a positive impression of primary school. At that time, a group of little kids didn't understand the distinction between commoners and nobles, and they didn't care about that when playing together.
Due to this, he mustered up the courage to look forward to high school. But the current situation completely drained the courage he had painstakingly accumulated. He quietly told me, "Maybe we should be homeschooled like Cynthia."
