Chapter 729: The Shadow of Memories
Chapter 729: The Shadow of Memories
Carolyn's POV:
The lady from the past?
Master Mary's description left me a bit puzzled. Was that a nickname for some kind of evil creature?
The black mist in the crystal bottle remained silent for a while, but soon it became active again. It seemed to give up struggling and roamed at the bottom of the bottle, casting malicious glares at everyone present.
"What is it?" the former king asked.
"It's a creation of memories, Your Majesty. I don't think I can classify her as any known creature. Strictly speaking, she can't even be considered an 'existence.""
The former king wanted her to be clearer.
"Simply put, the owner of these memories has long since died, and as a memory, she should have disappeared with her owner's departure. But if her owner left her before dying or someone extracted her, this bundle of memories could remain in this world as an independent entity.
"Because they are human memories, she retains to some extent the emotions of the original owner, especially the prominent and intense ones, which are more likely to be inherited. But because she lost her owner, these emotions are easily subject to change. Emotions are one of the sources of power, and when emotions become strong enough, they can generate great power or harm. The magical community considers this a taboo, and desecrating the memories of the deceased is absolutely forbidden."
Master Mary knocked on the bottle, and the black mist scattered suddenly, then condensed back together.
"But the lady inside this bottle is no longer just a memory; someone has manipulated her and distorted her power, constructing a false consciousness for her, making her appear like an evil being. However, in reality, she has no life force; an external influence entirely fuels her actions: evil power. From this perspective, she can be seen as an evil creation or an animate prop."
The former king stared at the black mist in the bottle, pondering, "Do you think she might be related to Adele's abnormality?"
"Yes, there's a high probability they are connected," Master Mary said. "Whenever evil power is exposed in the air, the magic detectors will react. But it only warned us today when Adele had her outburst, so it wasn't hovering around this mansion from the beginning.
"I believe she first entered the body of someone who could interact with the outside world, and then during that person's contact with Adele, she infiltrated Adele's body. Considering the peculiarity of this mansion, the unfortunate person she chose is most likely among the prison guards."
Now the prison guards were bewildered. They looked at each other, and finally, one of them stepped forward and said softly, "Today was supposed to be a day for medical checkups, and at noon, I came to measure the prisoners' blood pressure and blood sugar. I think I'm the only one who had direct contact with her in the past three days."
The female prison guard didn't stand out much, but I still recognized her when we entered, she was one of the people holding Adele down, and she had just served me hot tea.
"So, it makes sense," Master Mary said. "She first hid inside you, and then when you examined Adele, she invaded Adele's body. Later, when you caught Adele, she returned to you. Finally, during your contact with Ms. Carolyn, she slipped into her body."
At this point, I raised my hand to ask, "I noticed that you've been using 'she.' Does it have something to do with the identity of the memory's owner?"
Master Mary averted her gaze and looked subtly at my father. "Yes, compared to 'it,' 'she' has more identity reference."
When her gaze met my father's, he looked puzzled in return.
Master Mary lowered her gaze and said, "It's not the right time to discuss this now. Kevin and
I have examined Adele; she'll be brought here soon. As for what's in this bottle, I'm sure Your Majesty will have to investigate her later. We can talk about it then."
She glanced around, clearly hinting that too many people surrounded us.
The former king nodded, indicating for Master Mary to bring Adele. A minute later, Master Mary and Kevin led the dazed woman downstairs.
I didn't know much about Kevin; I only knew that, like Master Mary, the Queen highly trusted him. He seemed a serious, old-fashioned man who didn't care much about social niceties. He said, "Adele has calmed down; as long as she doesn't receive external stimuli, the chance of another episode is very small.
"Her mental world suffered a second injury during this false outburst, and her muscles were damaged under magic pressure. If there's another accident like this, I don't think she will have a chance to experience a third."
Adele sat there silently, indifferent to the diagnosis given by others.
Seeing her like this, my father clenched his fists and asked, "Is it... serious? Is there no chance of recovery?"
Kevin glanced at him, and his gaze said, "I don't want to answer such foolish questions." He said coldly, "Repairing a damaged mental world is very slow. For someone like Adele, there's zero chance of recovery."
Just then, Adele, who had been like a puppet all this time, suddenly leaped up and ran quickly toward the door.
