Chapter 699: The Flower's Rejection

Yarin's POV:

Unknowingly, I was stunned.

"Yarin? Yarin?" Lily waved her hand in front of me in confusion.

I suddenly came back to my senses and coughed uncomfortably. I lowered my head and whispered, "Sorry, I was distracted. I... I didn't sleep well last night."

Lily looked understanding and said indifferently, "It was nothing. It was indeed a tiring night. I was wondering why you were so quiet today. It turns out that you're tired. Go back and have a good rest. You're leaving tomorrow. Take advantage of today to recuperate."

I shook my head and realized that this might be my last chance, so I made up my mind and said, "It's okay. I'm not sleepy. I want to stay with you for a while longer. Lily, I have something to tell you..."

"Go back and rest, Yarin," Lily gently interrupted me. She looked straight into my eyes, so sincere and clear, as if she could easily see through the deepest secret I hid in my heart, making me panic.

"We still have many opportunities to chat in the future. Didn't we agree? You're still young, and your body is still growing. It's time for you to rest. Don't worry about me. There are so many doctors and nurses here. Go back quickly."

I heard a sense of rejection in her words. Although every word was soft, it was a gentle and irresistible answer.

But I hadn't said anything yet.

I looked at Lily, and Lily looked at me. Suddenly, I realized that the girl in front of me was very different from the one I knew when we first met.

She pushed away the sharp needles all over her body and no longer bared her sharp teeth at me. The coldness that rejected people thousands of miles away was unknowingly replaced by closeness. The layer of ice between us had long melted, but there seemed to be no way to take another step forward.

She stood at the other end of the road, smiling and shaking her head.

All right, I understood that.

I was not a very qualified actor. Even I couldn't bear to watch my lousy acting skills. So why should I be surprised that Lily saw through my thoughts?

My sudden and violent feelings to her were probably just a child's monologue.

She rejected me in such a gentle way, which was already very considerate of my face.

When I was young, my grandfather taught me that if a lady rejected you, you should not continue to pester her. That was not love; it was selfishness. This old duke, who had always abided by etiquette, was a man of integrity. I admired him very much and agreed with his teachings.

So, in the end, I swallowed the words I hadn't had the time to say and only said, "I'm going back now. See you in the evening. Lily, perhaps you'd like to have supper with Heller and me?" "Of course." This time, she didn't refuse.

I returned to my room in a daze. I threw myself onto the bed and hugged the pillow in a quiet trance.

"What happened? You look like you've lost your soul." Even Heller, who was temporarily blind, sensed that something was wrong with me. "If you had just returned from Lily's place, you would have asked me to replay your conversation excitedly. Why aren't you saying anything today?"

I turned over and said, "I was rejected."

"... What happened?"

"Rejected. Lily rejected me."

Heller immediately jumped onto my bed and asked urgently, "What? So you confessed to Lily just now? You're too reckless, bro!"

"I didn't, and I didn't have the time to tell her." I buried myself in the blanket and recalled Lily's gentle, firm eyes.

"Lily didn't say anything, but I could read her eyes. Do you understand her eyes? She knew everything but didn't want to embarrass me, so she rejected me silently. Sigh, I said I didn't understand but understood it anyway, just like how she understood me."

Heller was confused. Finally, he comforted me, "At least you won't have any regrets. Besides, you're still friends. Perhaps you should be glad that the words you didn't say didn't change your relationship. Just like the romance dramas Cynthia watched, once a confession is made, no matter how good a friendship they have, they would never be able to return to the past."

"That's true." I smiled bitterly.

At least we were friends.

Seeing that I was uninterested, Heller started changing the topic, "Do you know what I just heard? Her mother found many companies with connections with the Lily of the Valley. Her mother was so angry that she asked Francis to choose a new partner for trading with Jasper. There's a Mr. Carl on the new list of candidates. Guess who he is?"

"Who is it?"

"He's Denise's father. Do you remember Denise? On the day of the Moonlight Festival, she was on the same float as us."

A doll-like blonde girl came to mind. "I remember now. That day, you were going to play with someone. I gave her one of your badges, but many things happened afterward, so it was left unsettled."
