Chapter 520: The Eerie Presence

Gastone shut his eyes tightly as he heard what Draco had questioned. He had thought about it, too, but it all ended with him prioritizing Lucia’s goals and ambitions.

"This is for the best. I want Lucia to be happy, and she deserves everything she has dreamed of," Gastone replied with a small smile.

"Ah, I can really see that you’re starting to accept the reality you have created," Draco shook his head. He wanted to push Gastone to change his mind and pursue Lucia, but he knew only Gastone could decide on that. "Well, If you need anything, I’m here."

Draco stood up and smiled at Gastone before leaving.

Gastone stared at Draco’s back as he left the door. Their conversation had weighed on his heart, and it had made his mind more chaotic.

"This is for the best," Gastone muttered, looking down on his hands. Then, a drop of tear fell, surprising him.

Gastone reached toward his cheeks and wiped the tears away. Knowing he unconsciously cried made him mad, and he threw away several pillows to vent his rage and frustration.

"Gastone... this is for the best. Forget Lucia and her existence," Gastone talked to himself as he stared at the ceiling. He collapsed on the bed, and his thoughts played in his mind.

The memories of the night Lucia looked at him before answering Daniel’s proposal were sketched in his mind, engraving them forever.

"I should stroll around," Gastone muttered before sitting up. He looked around his room and sighed deeply, remembering that Rosina and Draco told him they’d always be there for him. "They’re still good to me after what had happened in the past."

Gastone stood up, picked up his robe, and left his room. He wanted to explore the house that they had made for him. It was an average size, and he wanted to see if there was something that could distract him from his thoughts about Lucia.

"I hope there’s a library here," Gastone muttered while opening the doors when he saw one. When he reached the last door, he was surprised to see a vast room full of books and a table at the center.

"This looks like an office," Gastone chuckled, remembering he had the same room design before. He was about to enter when his stomach growled. "I just ate..."

Gastone sighed as he closed the door and went downstairs to look for something to fill his stomach. He saw the kitchen and pantry full of needed groceries and materials, and he was delighted about it.

However, Gastone noticed the silent atmosphere. He was the only one in the house and felt a shiver in his skin, but he shrugged it off. He was fine without a servant to serve him.

Gastone started picking out the ingredients and began cooking when he felt a presence behind him. It was eerie that it made his skin crawl. He grabbed the nearby knife and swiftly turned around, seeing a woman sitting by the table with a smile on her face.

"I meant no harm," the woman stated, looking at the knife from Gastone’s hand.

"Who are you?" Gastone stated defensively. His eyes squinted as he stared at the familiar woman, but he couldn’t remember where he saw her.

"Oh, you don’t remember me?" the woman gasped, covering her mouth while acting in disbelief.

"What are you doing in my house?" Gastone asked, gritting his teeth and stepping back to create more distance between them. He was being cautious since he didn’t feel the woman’s presence upon entering the same room as he was in.

Gastone knew some wolves in the realm were still against him and wanted to kill him. He didn’t want to take any chances of being killed by one of them.

"I’m hurt you don’t recognize me, but it’s okay. Maybe we don’t spend more time together anyway," the woman stated, chuckling. She hopped down the table and walked closer to Gastone.

"Stay back," Gastone warned, raising the knife against the woman.

"Oh wow," the woman shook her head and raised both hands to show he was harmless. "See, I’m just a vulnerable woman."

"Who are you?" Gastone asked cautiously. He hates people who came up to him and acted like they knew him so well.

The woman acted hurt. "I’m Vanda, Rosina’s friend," she answered sweetly.

Gastone’s brows furrowed and noticed Vanda didn’t use a title to address Rosina. "Vanda? I’m not familiar with you," he replied, still in a defensive stance.

"Ah... that’s too bad, but you can ask Rosina directly. In the meantime, I’ll go for now. I’ll be back when you confirm my identity," Vanda smiled teasingly and began walking away.

"And why would I do that?" Gastone asked, irritated.

Vanda paused mid-step, turning her head slightly toward Gastone, her smile growing enigmatic. "Because curiosity will get the better of you, Gastone," she said softly, her voice carrying an undertone of amusement. "And because deep down, you want answers to questions you haven’t even thought to ask yet."

Vanda’s cryptic words further unsettled Gastone, but before he could reply, she turned the corner and disappeared into the shadows. Gastone lowered the knife slowly, his mind spinning.

’Vanda... Rosina’s friend? Has Rosina never mentioned her before, or did I forget about it?’ Gastone thought in confusion. He tried to clear his mind as he continued preparing his food, but he couldn’t focus since he wanted to know who Vanda was and if she was relevant in his life.

The encounter left a sour taste in Gastone’s mouth, but something about Vanda’s demeanor— her familiarity, her playful confidence— struck him as peculiar.

"F^ck this!" Gastone cursed as he slammed the knife down and took a deep breath to calm himself. "I need to go to the Palace," he continued.

Gastone quickly finished cooking, though his appetite was diminished. He placed his food safely on the counter and covered it with a plate to reserve for later when he returned. He planned to speak to Rosina as soon as possible.
