Chapter 82: Chapter 82- Colleagues
ZARAH~
7, 8, 9, 10, 11. The hours were passing like minutes as I stared at the door, Since the moment he walked in he had remained confined in the office, and no one came in. I had tried calling him numerous times yesterday but they had kept going straight to voicemail.
I let out a deep breath as I rehearsed the words that I had practiced.
"Micheal I—" Before the words could leave my mouth the door of his office opened up, my head turned to its direction and he stepped out the scene made my heart sink, his skin looked slightly pale, and his blue eyes didn’t look as vibrant and worst of all his smile was nowhere.
He turned to me, emotion lost in his gaze
"Di—" He stopped as if unable to fully say the word "Come into my office." He ordered, his tone held no hint of kinship and was the dictionary definition of professional. I took in a deep breath as I rose and walked into the office.
"Take a seat." He said, his eyes avoiding mine as they remained fixed on the screen of his computer.
"Micheal."
"Mr. Micheal." He corrected respectfully as he typed something into his computer.
"Miss?" He dragged on.
"Zarah," I answered, and the words felt heavy as they left my mouth.
"Miss Zarah, I wanted to speak to you about—"
"I’m sorry Micheal."
"You don’t need to be Miss Zarah. You have no obligation to me and I none to you."
"We’re friends Micheal."
"Mr." He corrected again, I ground my teeth but obliged anyway.
"We’re friends, Mr Micheal."
"Hmmmmm, I don’t recall a moment when we were friends Miss Zarah." He replied but as it got to my name his words became choked as if he was forcing himself to say them.
"Don’t, please don’t call me that."
"It’s your name, Dina Meyers was a game you played, a facade, she wasn’t real so why should I pretend that any relationship I had with her was." He said but his tone wasn’t as blank as before.
"Yes, Dina Meyers wasn’t my real name but that’s where it all stops Micheal," I explained as I held onto his hands, he looked at my hand then back at me.
"I can’t trust that, I can’t trust you. There can’t be a relationship without trust but you don’t need trust to work with someone." He said as he pulled his hands away from mine and turned back to the computer screen.
"About your promotion—"
"Is this gonna affect it?" I interrupted with a question that I only realized was stupid when it left my mouth.
"What?" He asked me with an insulted look on his face "The fuck do you mean by that." He growled, And for the first time since I met him, there was anger in his eyes.
"I didn’t mean it like that." I nervously said.
"Then how the fuck did you mean it?" He asked angrily.
"I—" I couldn’t think of anything to say.
"You think I’m the kind of guy that would ruin something for someone, you think I’m the kind of guy who would ruin someone’s life because they felt betrayed!"
"Micheal—"
"No! save whatever you wanna say for someone who wants to hear it." He said, his voice calmer than it was a few seconds ago "You have a meeting with the shareholders tomorrow that’ll decide whether or not you get the promotion."
"Micheal."
"I suggest you get to work on whatever it is you’re going to say." He said then passed a file to me, I was hesitant but I took it from his hands.
"Look through that, master each page, the meeting tomorrow is gonna be like an interview so prepare. You can leave." He dismissed and turned back to his system. I knew Micheal, he rarely used the laptop that was on his desk but today he couldn’t keep his eyes off it.
"I know you’re angry at me Michael, I know it feels like I’ve been lying to you but—"
"It’s not that Di—, it’s not that Zarah." He said, "Maybe you had your reasons, maybe it was a good reason but I can’t help but think what else is a lie, What else have you been lying to me about, You told me Elliott’s father was dead." He said, my eyes widened as I remembered the conversation.
’Where is his father.’ Micheal asked as he held Elliott.
’Dead, car accident." I lied without a hint of hesitation.
I winced inwardly as I remembered that conversation 3 years ago, the first time I brought Elliott to work because I couldn’t find a babysitter, he didn’t make it a problem, he didn’t tell me to take the day off to find one, he was perfectly ok he gave me his office for the day so if Elliott cried he wouldn’t disturb my coworkers.
"I believed you even when I saw Damon the first time and he called you the mother of his child, I thought he was just a disgruntled ex trying to force his way back into your life. But yesterday I saw that the resemblance was unmistakable, that he is Elliott’s father."
"I didn’t tell you because—"
"Don’t, I don’t wanna hear any more lies. You can leave." He said, as he rolled his chair and faced the walls, I knew anything I said now would fall on deaf ears, I just lost the one person who truly cared about me, and worst of all I had no one to blame but myself.
Slowly I stood up from the chair and began entering the office but as I reached the door I felt a cold shiver run through me as I realized what walking out right now would mean, the end, we would be nothing more than colleagues, I turned around to face him and he was still facing the wall.
"I am sorry Micheal." I apologized before I hesitantly walked out.
