Chapter 29: Chapter 29- Deserved Opportunity
DANIEL~
I stared at the framed picture of her that sat on the desk, she looked so beautiful, with her blonde hair that flowed down her shoulders like a golden stream, brown eyes that always sparkled no matter what she was feeling, and a smile that would make roses blush.
"Where did you go?" I mumbled to myself as I picked up the picture, I gently traced my fingers over her face and closed my eyes to remind myself of her. I put down the frame and looked around the office, I was glad Damon hadn’t had the time to worry about her space if not this place would have most likely been cleared of everything that belonged to her. I could still smell her perfume in the air, it felt like she was still right behind her desk smiling at me with those perfect lips of hers.
"I miss you Lorelei—" I said and saw a shadow emerge from the door, my head immediately snapped in the direction of the entity and I saw Carlos standing there with his eyes fixed on me.
"What are you doing here?" He asked as he stepped into the office, I scrambled for an excuse then remembered, I don’t need one.
"None of your business," I said rudely as I began walking out of the room but was stopped by Carlos who tightly held my wrist as I walked past him.
"Let go of me," I growled but he didn’t respond, instead he just locked his eyes dead on mine.
"Let me—"
"Shut up." he interrupted.
"What?"
"The beta asked you a question," he said again, his voice filled with authority.
"Fuck you, you low-rank piece of shit." I spat but my reaction only served to tighten his grip on my wrist.
"Watch your tone, I have no reservations about ending your life Daniel." He warned, I felt the hairs at the back of my neck rise with anger.
"You really threaten a shifter?" I asked with amused disbelief.
"Try me."
"Alright," I said with a wide grin, I had been looking for an excuse to kill this garbage and he had just made the mistake of presenting it to me, With my strength I pulled my arm away from his grasp and pushed him away then taking advantage of the gap I had created I switched into my partial transformation. Partial transformation allowed a werewolf to transform into a humanoid wolf, serving as a bridge between the human and the wolf, even though it didn’t allow us to use our full power, it still boosted us to an unimaginable level, I stood at the door, my 7-foot tall beast blocking the entrance with blood lusted eyes locked on Carlos who stood at the other side of the room.
"Die!" I howled and rushed towards him, with my clawed hands I swung at him but he easily leaped into the air and then did something my mind couldn’t register fast enough before I found myself with my back on the ground and a knife on my neck.
"Concede." he calmly said pressing the blade to my throat, I could feel my blood trickling down my throat.
"I concede," I said, as much as it hurt my ego to concede it’d hurt more if my life ended right now, hearing my words he removed his knife from my neck and stood up, I didn’t know what was worse the defeat or the absolute look of superiority he had. Damon had said that his skill was unmatched but I always thought it was an exaggeration now that I’ve seen it firsthand it made me realize what kind of beast he was. He began walking away from me but I couldn’t let him go without asking.
"Are you gonna tell Damon?"
"I’m not the kind of man to slander another simply because I dislike him."
"That doesn’t answer my question, I’m sorry but I need a straight answer."
"Even though he doesn’t like some of the things you say he puts up with it, he needs you and as far as you’re serving my alpha we’re on the same team." He replied and continued walking away then stopped at the end of the hall.
"Were you involved with the Luna?"
"I— I’d never do that," I answered.
"ok," he said and walked away from me, I let out a breath of relief, never have I been so thankful for someone’s lack of interest.
Below the ground floor of the headquarters was Floor zero which served as a training ground for enforcers, as I stepped out of the elevator I could immediately smell the sweat and blood in the air before I began hearing the tired noises of teenagers sparing, the screams, the grunts and the occasional crash on the metal floor, Some of them were gifted and the others would most likely be disappointing only serving to add numbers to our forces, As I stood at the gallery above them watching down on them one immediately spotted me and froze.
"Advisor!" He shouted and immediately they all went on their knees, instructors and students alike, I liked this feeling.
"Stand. Don’t mind me, you all can carry on with your training." I said loudly and they cheered as they resumed their activities, once every three months I would come down here and pick out 5 of the best students and take them to the high guard of the pack, also known as ’the will of the Alpha’ where their training would be intensified drawing out every little bit of potential they had and right now I had just spotted the next five members of the high guard.
I placed the five files on top of Damon’s table and watched as he looked through them before passing them to Carlos.
"Why are there no low ranks?" he asked after looking through all five files.
"They simply didn’t cut it," I answered with a smile.
"You’re telling me not even one low rank stood out?"
"No, I’m telling you I was looking for the best, and low ranks weren’t the best," I stated.
"I don’t believe that not even one of those low-rank boys had what it took to be a high guard."
"High ranks are stronger than low ranks it’s a fact," I said definitely.
"Well I heard a high rank and a low rank fought today and the low rank won, it was embarrassing how easy it was to win" Carlos reminded me, I stepped back before I spoke again.
"I get you’re skeptical but don’t question my judgement"
"Why won’t I!, it’s obviously flawed."
"You don’t speak to me that way." I reminded angrily.
"Why won’t I!, when you go down there do you even look at anyone who isn’t a high rank?" Carlos asked with annoyance.
"Of course I do they don’t measure up!"
"Of course, they don’t when the eyes that determine that are biased!!" He shouted back.
"Both of you enough!" Damon shouted as he slammed his fist into the table, we both got quiet as our eyes focused on him.
"Be honest Carlos, do you think this one he placed in front of me isn’t good enough?"
"I don’t think that"
"But you don’t like that there are no low ranks"
"They are all members of the pack who wanna serve and make something from the shit they were dealt, so I don’t think it’s fair that you take that away from them, that they aren’t even given the chance," Carlos explained, Damon turned his eyes to me.
"Daniel from today It’ll be you and Carlos who go down to floor zero, you’ll pick two candidates and he’ll pick two then you both will bring one more each and I take one or them to complete the five, do you understand?"
"Yes," I replied hesitantly.
"Is that ok?" He asked Carlos.
"It is Alpha." Carlos bowed and then stood up straight.
"Can I speak to Carlos alone?" Damon asked and I immediately took the hint and left the room.
