"You’re angry at me?" I said noticing the way he had tightened his fist

"I’m not angry at you," Carlos answered, making sure not to break his calm demeanor

"Then what are you angry at?" I inquired

"The world, I hate it built, I hate the way it works," he answered, his voice filled with an emotion I haven’t ever seen or heard or seen him express

"That’s just the world, Carlos, it’s not fair, it isn’t something we can change."

"Why not?, you are the Alpha, there’s no one with higher authority than you in the pack, so how can’t you change anything?"

"I’m not a prophet, I can’t fix a problem that has been there from the beginning of our existence"

"Don’t say that, ’cause you’ve never tried." He countered and I was left speechless, I couldn’t think of anything else to say in my defense, cause he was right, I had never tried to change it

"I know you don’t treat us like that, but that’s just you, not your people." Carlos continued, every word laced with pain and frustration

"I don’t — I didn’t." Before I could find words he interrupted

"It’s hard to fix a problem you don’t want to see."

"Don’t say that."

"Treatment, opportunity, they have privilege but we’re the same race so why is there a difference just cause they can transform."

"I wasn’t the one who created the system, I met it when I came and I’ve been trying to better it as much as I can but it’s not easy."

"You fixed every problem we had with outsiders while the inside tore itself apart."

"You may not know it but you treat us differently too.", my face twisted with confusion

"How?"

"The border incident, when you were sending men, tell me which rank made up the bulk of the forces." I was about to defend myself when I remembered

"90 percent low ranks and the remaining 10 percent high ranks with low stats," I answered quietly

"You were looking for dispensable forces and you picked low ranks, maybe you didn’t do it on purpose but that means it’s a bigger problem, you hold their lives in higher regard than ours and that’s a real fucking problem."

"It’s the truth, Damon, we are only on the same foot when it’s time to fight and die, that’s the only time we are seen as equal members of the pack but once that’s done it goes back to the way it’s always been."

"I’m sorry Carlos, I really didn’t know." I apologized

"I think you did, you never asked me why those wolves were chasing me, you never asked me what my parents did wrong and I know why you didn’t because you know the answer."

"I don’t." I immediately denied

"You were scared to hear the answer was nothing, you were scared to ask cause you didn’t wanna hear that my parents were killed simply for being low ranks and I get that, you don’t want to see your pack under that light so you pretend you’re blind."

"That’s a lie," I said under my breath

"And I respect you, ’cause when this pack was on its last legs you made it back into one of the greatest in the world, all by yourself." I remained silent

"When you saved me I thought, there’s a guy who wouldn’t let it slide, then you did, you let it slide over and over and over and over again."

"I didn’t."

"You did, look at Daniel, right in front of you he insults your people and you don’t do shit about it"

"Stop"

"No! I’m sick of low ranks being treated like trash when we have the same blood running through our veins!" He shouted and I’d heard enough

"Enough!!" I shouted angrily and he stopped

"I know I’ve failed you, but I’m still your alpha" I reminded, he shook his head gently

"I’ll always be loyal to you but I can’t be the beta to an Alpha who disregards his own people" Carlos as I took a step back "Serving you was an honor," he said then turned around and walked out of the office. I sat there dumbfounded by the interaction I just had with Carlos, as much as it hurt to admit, he was right, I had closed my eyes so I wouldn’t see the problems that were brewing inside the pack. I focused too much on the issues occurring outside and neglected the inside. I took a deep breath as I opened up the files again and looked through them Daniel was right, they were all incredibly impressive but I couldn’t make a decision based on just this so I stepped out of my office and headed down to Floor Zero.

The students were so focused on their training that they failed to notice my presence

"Alpha." the instructor at the balcony greeted me with a small bow, as he walked towards me

"Instructor," I said, returning his courtesy

"Are you looking for something?" He asked

"I would like the files on all your students, and I would like it now," I said, he nodded and immediately left my sight to go get them, it took him a few moments before he finally came back with the files, I looked at the folders and looked at the number of students, they didn’t match up

"These aren’t all of them."

"Yes, these are just the files for the high ranks," he answered me with a smile

’Fuckkkkkkkkkk!!" I thought, never had someone been proven right so fast

"Why didn’t you bring the files on the low ranks?"

"Emmm, the advisor only ever asked for—" he was answering, his voice a scared tremble when I interrupted

"Who am I?" I asked, he looked confused

"The, The— The Alpha."

"So I’m not the advisor," I asked

"You are not," he confirmed, the tremble increasing

"So follow my orders not his, Now!" I ordered and he immediately scurried away

’what fuck Daniel?’ I asked myself, frustrated by how fast they had proved him right.

It didn’t take long before the instructor came back with the rest of the files, I took them from him and drew him close

"If I hear the word of this kind of behavior again, you will no longer be an instructor" I warned

"Yes Alpha," he said with a persistent nod then I let go of him and he ran back down to his students.

Back at my office, I had looked through all the files and I honestly didn’t know what to feel. The average low ranks by far surpassed the average high-rank students and they were only three high ranks ahead of the two top low ranks, Carlos was right, Daniel hadn’t even given them a chance, I knew I couldn’t fix all of the problems that plagued my pack but I could at least start with this. The new members of the high guard would consist of Three high ranks and Two low ranks.
