After Surviving the Apocalypse, I Built a City in Another World -
Chapter 1433: Terran Animal Shelter
Chapter 1433: Terran Animal Shelter
The group now headed towards the animal shelter, which was built on one of the parks.
Most of them were cats and dogs, for some reason. It was really a mystery for a while until the animal experts (they built their own group without Althea having to formalize it) studied hard for the past couple of months.
Before, they knew that mixed breeds had higher chances of survival than pure breeds, simply because their genes were more varied than pure breeds, which had quite a bit of inbreeding involved.
After studying the ones they had, the experts came up with a theory.
The first one was regarding large animals like elephants, giraffes, hippos, and so on. At first, they just thought that if some of those transferred, they might’ve just been targeted by monsters here due to their sizes.
However, now that they had more understanding about how their bodies changed even back in Terran, they came to realize it must’ve something to do with aether too.
Getting improved by the system seemed to have a requirement. Other than genetics, it seemed like mass also played a factor. Perhaps the aether injected into bodies simply wasn’t enough to transform the massive bodies of those animals, so they perished along with most of the critters,
The medium-sized animals seemed to have the most chances of survival from the initial transformations. However, so far, there were only a few wild animals that were there.
Other than snow, there were three pandas, another female wolf, two coyotes, three deers, and two bears (one black and one brown).
However, it seemed that intelligence had also been increased in these creatures. As soon as they realized they were in a safe place, their aggressiveness became controlled, and the citizens didn’t have to use their pre-prepared tranquilizer darts.
The running theory was that the animals, now in a completely different world, saw Terran humans as ’brethren’ because they came from the same planet.
Anyway, this park had become a zoo of sorts, and many people came by to see and feed them. Adorably, their enclosures (which were much bigger than how they were in Terran zoos) could be opened as long as they rang a bell, and the groundkeeper would open it for them.
The groundkeeper was actually a guard assigned there, and he/she would then send an aether letter to inform the others that a wild animal would be on the loose.
So far, none of the wild animals hurt anyone unprovoked, and the cases where they did were allowed to pass simply because the victims deserved getting bitten.
They were mostly arrogant aborigines who didn’t see them as ’wild and dangerous’ animals, but there were also a few Terrans who wanted to feel powerful by ’taking down a bear’ or something like that.
After the first couple of weeks, though, fortunately, no more cases happened and everyone was properly warned before approaching them.
Eventually, it developed into the current state, where people would come to admire and pet the animals.
Even the aborigines who had seen the stuffed animal versions were fascinated seeing them in actual life.
At this time, they became mascots as well. They didn’t go hungry either because there’d always be someone buying food for them. Of course, no adult would allow their kids to play with the un-partnered wild animals on their own, so there would always be an adult whenever the kids played in this area.
Speaking of that, there were no battle pets among them.
There were a few people who tried to befriend the animals in an attempt to turn them into battle pets, but they weren’t really interested yet. Dog (the person) even placed his hand on their mouths to get them to bite and bond, though they just spat his hand out in disgust.
It was a very popular story.
Of course, there was the concern of illnesses like rabies at first, so there weren’t many who were as brave as Dog in the early days of the zoo. Amazingly, when the doctors checked the animals, they didn’t have signs of rabies or anything infectious at all. One had to know all of these were mixed breeds, likely street animals.
Like how the humans’ illnesses were fixed, it seemed to have the same effect on the animals. In time, the zoo became more and more popular, with several hopeful souls passing by every few days, making this park one of the liveliest places in Alterra.
This was the sight that Lola, Yona, and the babies came to.
"Waoooo..." Baby Meatball mumbled, excitedly running forward. However, he was stopped by the tether and could only go so far. The baby turned to his nanny with beaded eyes, making everyone’s hearts soften.
"Let’s go see the cats and dogs first," Yona said, leading the party to the domesticated animal section, which was completely open for cats, dogs, and the like. "Shouldn’t we go and look at what Bianca and the others were working on?"
Soon, they saw a labyrinth-like wooden structure that was like a small fortress. There were towering ramps and platforms, and underneath them were various animal houses of different sizes.
On the upper floor, there were a lot of bridges and the like for the cats, and there were also smaller houses there. There were also plenty of toys for them there and other things to fill up their time.
The babies were fascinated and immediately toddled towards the area, and Yona and Lola finally took off their tethers.
As they watched over the kids (who were now with other playmates), they couldn’t help but look at the long queue at the side.
"It looks like there are still many attempts today," Lola said, an amused smile gracing her face. Yana chuckled.
"Well, who wouldn’t want their own battle pets?"
Every day, there was a line here of hopeful folks hoping to bond with Terran animals. At this, the two old women could only smile.
Hopefully, after so long, there would be new bonds today!
