Chapter 1434: Battle Pets Galore

Some of these people were the soldiers, who were at the back of the line. This was the first time they were trying since the corral was opened up for potential bondings.

They were asked to give chances to the civilians first because they were already plenty strong on their own. It was mostly peer pressure though, and Garan didn’t seem to care as long as they went to Alterrans.

Anyway, now that the morning batch of civilians had seen no success, they were finally trying out their luck!

So far, no one had gotten a battle pet other than Miss Althea, Captain, Gwen, and Ryan. In all those cases, the battle pets were so useful.

Fufi and Snow were awesome fighters and were physically stronger and faster than humans at their level. Ryan and Gwen’s cats were very useful as well, and they were incredibly agile and flexible, able to distract enemies several levels above them.

Most importantly, they were all adorable floofs that healed the soul!

Basically, everyone— at least at some point in their childhoods—had dreamed of owning little monsters who were loyal friends to them.

Games like Bokeemon and Dogimon were so popular because of this!

There were also plenty who still liked this despite growing so old. For example, at this time, there were Luis, Mao, Orz, and a few others lining up.

Mao was one of the few extroverts in this group, and he actually hung around the animal experts before today.

The animals would choose whoever was strong enough but also fit them well.

Miss Althea and Sir Garan’s talents were out of this world. They never said their potential, but everyone could tell they were far superior to normal.

For one, Miss Althea was only level 17, but even without the mana cookies and those overpowered equipment of hers, anyone could tell she had much higher stats than the rest of them!

Gwen was also strong, though they reckoned her case must have a lot to do with survival, and this was something she herself told others whenever they asked. At the time, the cats desperately needed a guardian, especially the pregnant one, so a partnership was made.

So far, Alterrans were not weak but somehow none of them managed to get battle pets. It must’ve been an issue of compatibility as well as enough strength.

Past the initial queue, they would then separate to whichever beast they hoped to contract first. One had to know that they should choose well, because if it was unsuccessful, they had to line up at the back again if they wanted to try with a different animal.

The corrals were still closed, though the prospective bonder would be entering inside. Each animal had their own abode similar to what they had in the wild.

For example, pandas had a small bamboo forest in their area. The bears were given the dense trees to scratch their backs on, the coyotes had a lot of brush and broken ground to slink through and hide in.

This was done not just for the comfort of the animal, but also for the prospective bonder to understand them better, whether through their behavior or their habitats.

For the first batch of soldiers, there were Luis and Mao who’d be trying. They were trying different animals anyway, so they entered at around the same time.

To be honest, Luis wanted a bear (all boys like big critters), though to be honest, he had a feeling it wouldn’t be a fit. In the end... he chose the coyote enclosure.

They were animals who could handle the heat and could handle the chaos often associated with the fire element. He could also see the partnership going on: He would use his fire to create explosive upfront damage, while his partner would agilely attack from behind!

"Choose me! I’m strong!" he said as he entered the enclosure. It was not a small enclosure, and the coyotes were looking guardedly at him. They didn’t attack people in general, though their guardedness probably stemmed from their level differences.

Anyway, he naturally did some research before heading in. It happened that one of his drinking buddies was a veterinarian who knew a lot about wild animals, too.

Coyotes were not pack animals. They moved in loose animal units that still valued autonomy. He could see this with how they moved, and he wondered which one would be for him.

He watched their movements as they circled around him, with his mind deep in thought. He had a maximum of 20 minutes to make a bond, and shorter if the animal blatantly rejected them by making threatening gestures or even attacking.

After a thought, Luis let the fire elements appear around him, but not to attack or intimidate, but to welcome and attract.

Each ember mirrored the coyotes’ movements, as if trying to befriend them. He then calmly sat down as this went on, and he made sure to keep eye contact with whichever coyote was in front of him.

He did find himself being particularly attracted to the biggest one, which seemed to also be the most irritable of the bunch. He should be going for the calmest one, but he felt like he’d mix better with this one.

After about ten minutes of this, the biggest one growled at the others and they stopped moving. It then slowly moved towards Luis, its head slightly down, and Luis grinned, patting its head.

He then used the same hand to offer his hand, which the canine instinctively bit.

[You have successfully created a Bond. Please name your Battle Pet.]

Luis jumped up, excited. "YASSS!"

[You have decided to name your Battle Pet ’Yass’. Confirm? Yes | No]

"..."

Well, he hadn’t really thought about a name yet because he didn’t know exactly which would end up with him, if he’d be able to bond at all.

He almost just shrugged and clicked [Yes], but fortunately, he wasn’t that lazy.

He ended up naming him Wiley, instead, like that cartoon he liked.

With this, Wiley followed closely behind Luis as he left the corral, gaining applause.

He smiled and looked at the corral across, which was the Pandas. He could see Mao pointing at one of the pandas lazing around, munching on bamboo. Obviously, he had been trying to convince the massive ball in the past couple of minutes.

"Come on, man, didn’t we work so well together during the war? You rolled around handsomely!" Mao said, and then he presented his chubby hand with a bamboo.

However, while the panda did take Mao’s bamboo, he was met with the panda’s flabby bum instead.
