Chapter 357: Chapter 357: Sang Nanfeng’s Tragic Circumstances
"I’m sorry, I had some unforeseen matters today, so I got delayed a bit," Sang Nanfeng said as he bowed in apology, despite being scolded and pointed at, his emotions remained unchanged.
"Don’t you know to leave your house earlier if you have matters to attend to? Always coming in late, I’m docking half a day’s pay," the lady boss did not let him off just because he was good-natured.
These days, employees are just lazy, always trying to dodge work for even a minute, she definitely won’t indulge such behavior!
"You... I was only two minutes late," Sang Nanfeng said, his hands dropping to his sides, unable to resist clenching them into fists.
"What? Isn’t two minutes late still late? Don’t want to work? Then get out! Look at you, all shabby and unkempt, if it wasn’t for my kindness in taking you in, do you think anyone else would want you? I haven’t even complained about you scaring away my customers, that’s all my kindness!"
The lady boss scoffed, her gaze contemptuously sweeping over Sang Nanfeng’s ragged clothes.
His hair was a mess as if it hadn’t been washed in days, it was only because of his strength to carry heavy loads and his willingness to help with serving food during idle times, and since he asked for half the salary others would, that she barely kept him on.
Hearing these words, Sang Nanfeng’s fists unclenched again, he was well aware of how many jobs he had searched for and the humiliation he had gone through.
"Alright, dock half a day, I won’t be late next time."
"That’s more like it, now get moving and work! Don’t you see how busy the kitchen is? Remember to put on a hat and mask, and wash your hands!"
"Understood." Sang Nanfeng bowed his head and went into the kitchen to help, he wasn’t fond of talking and preferred to remain silent whenever possible.
As a result, hardly any of the restaurant staff befriended him, everyone just tried to push their work onto him.
Sang Nanfeng’s tasks ranged from helping clean the ingredients to moving goods and serving food that morning.
His clothes were dusty, and the lady boss often said he wasn’t presentable, only letting him help out when they were really swamped, like now, when every table up to the second floor was filled, and two waiters couldn’t keep up with serving.
"What are you standing there looking at? Go help, can’t you see how many customers are outside?"
"Okay."
Sang Nanfeng wore an apron to cover the dirty marks on his clothes and carried the dishes over.
"Hello, guests, please enjoy your meal."
"Ew, brother, look at his hands, they are filthy," the woman at the table showed a disgusted expression.
"Are you the waiter here? Why are you so grimy like a stinking beggar? What’s going on? Hey, get the boss here now!"
The man immediately slammed the table and rose up, revealing the tattoos on his arms, his eyes fierce.
The commotion caught the attention of the nearby tables, and the originally noisy restaurant fell silent. Everyone looked at their table, noticing the filthy waiter.
"Is he also their waiter? So dirty, and there’s a strange smell coming from him."
"Yeah, how could they hire such a person, it really kills the appetite, I can’t eat my food now."
"I’m not even sure if this food is clean, I wish I hadn’t come here."
The customers’ murmurs reached the lady boss’s ears, startling her.
She immediately came over with an apologetic smile, "Everyone, there has been a misunderstanding; this man is not our waiter, he is just a general helper. I don’t know how he ended up serving food, I will definitely handle him thoroughly later, I’m truly sorry."
"Did you think it was all resolved by just scolding him? What about the dish he served?" the man with a tattooed arm said, face displeased.
"Can I get you a fresh plate?" the proprietress said through gritted teeth, as the restaurant was busy with many customers and settling the matter quickly was crucial.
"Alright, just don’t let that lousy errand boy touch our food again."
"Of course."
The proprietress had just breathed a sigh of relief and was about to head back to the kitchen when another man stood up beside her.
"And what about our table?" he asked.
"Is there a problem with your table?"
"Didn’t you see my daughter running to the restroom multiple times? That errand boy works here; who knows if bacteria from him ended up in our food and caused this."
Hearing this, the proprietress immediately became anxious, "That’s impossible; I never let him go to the kitchen."
"What do you mean, you never let him? Didn’t he just come out serving dishes? Don’t think you can fool me. If you don’t handle this properly, I won’t let your restaurant get away with it. I’m going to file a complaint!"
The man was relentless, criticizing the eatery for employing such unkempt individuals, and he wasn’t about to feel guilty about extorting them.
"I never touched your table’s food," Nanfeng couldn’t help but speak up in defense.
"Who knows if you did or not, being so filthy, you probably lose a lot of bacteria just walking past."
His words caused everyone in the venue to look up, with many murmuring among themselves, and some customers who had just entered promptly turned and left.
Seeing that this troublemaker was affecting her business, the proprietress had no choice but to swallow her pride.
"Sir, how would you like to resolve this? We can talk privately; your shouting is affecting our business."
"You should at least compensate ten thousand yuan, although it’s just diarrhea now, who knows if my daughter might develop complications later."
"That’s way too much!" the proprietress exclaimed, her eyes widening; demanding ten thousand yuan for a stomach upset was utterly ludicrous.
"Not compensating? Alright, then we’ll proceed formally—I’m curious to see if your restaurant can continue to operate!"
"Don’t—please, I’ll pay," the proprietress said through clenched teeth, the trouble brought about by this filthy employee was too much; she could front the cost for now and deduct it from his wages later.
After the proprietress unhappily compensated and the customer left, she took Nanfeng to a small compartment near the kitchen.
"This ten thousand yuan mess is your doing. Starting now, it’ll be deducted from your salary."
"You asked me to help serve the food. I told you I wasn’t very clean, but you insisted on making me, a mover, do it," Nanfeng replied, face grim.
He hadn’t anticipated the proprietress to exploit him like this, let alone force him to pay such a hefty sum.
"Assisting with tasks around the shop is part of your job, isn’t it? And couldn’t you read the situation? For a problematic customer like that, you should have let another waiter handle it," the proprietress snapped, visibly displeased.
"I’m not paying for this. I quit," Nanfeng said without hesitation, removing his apron.
He had always swallowed his pride in this job, but to be asked out of the blue to pay ten thousand yuan to a customer was something he could no longer tolerate.
