Chapter 405: Chapter 405 Finally Remembered
Wu Peng is Huang Yingya’s cousin, and Li Hengze guessed he must know something.
Wu Peng is also one of Yun City’s rich kids. His family has a billiard room, and he often invites his friends over to play pool.
When Li Hengze arrived, several friends couldn’t help but poke fun at him.
"I really feel like Ah Ze has gotten more flamboyant recently. He never used to wear tight clothes, but now that he’s lost weight, he’s showing off his body at every chance."
"Right? Before he even stepped through the door, I could already smell that distinct scent of hormones he’s deliberately emanating."
"Nowadays, he’s like some alpha wolf in a pack, hahahaha."
Li Hengze didn’t stay upset for long after being teased. He quickly turned the tables and fired back: "You’re just jealous, jealous of my fantastic physique."
"Fine, fine, we’re jealous. To stop us from being jealous, maybe next time you could wear something proper."
Li Hengze grabbed a cue stick and joined in the fun.
After playing for a while, he sidled up to Wu Peng and said, "I ran into your cousin again tonight, but I find it odd. Every time she sees me, she looks at me like I owe her a ton of money and blames me for not remembering her. But no matter how hard I think, I really can’t figure out where I’ve met her."
Wu Peng had no clue about this either. He said, "You mean Yingya, right? She lived abroad for a long time, so logically she shouldn’t know you. Could it be you ran into her while vacationing overseas? Didn’t you live in Europe for two months during high school with your mom?"
"Yeah, it was just one summer. Besides, that was ages ago—who could remember anything from back then?"
"True. You went to the UK, and Yingya lived in Germany. But Yingya loves traveling; maybe she met you in the UK. Think about it—was there something memorable that happened back then? Did you meet any girls around Yingya’s age? She’s two or three years younger than you, so back then she would’ve been a middle schooler."
Li Hengze thought long and hard about that summer vacation but still couldn’t pinpoint anything significant.
He said, "I remember the place I stayed didn’t have many people. I was bored to death and often went to a lakeside where lots of people were kayaking. I was pretty mischievous back then and liked to kayak alone, though I didn’t dare go to the deeper water—just paddled briefly near the shore."
Wu Peng said, "My cousin used to love kayaking too. You might’ve met. Think harder—did you get particularly close to any little girl?"
Li Hengze mulled it over again for quite a while and finally said, "I remember most of the kayakers were fair-skinned, blue-eyed, blonde foreigners. Oh, right! There were two Hua Country girls. One of them even spoke Chinese, so I hung out with her more."
"Could she have been Yingya?"
Initially, Li Hengze couldn’t recall anything, but once the floodgates of his memories opened, they began pouring out in droves.
"I remember that girl didn’t think much of me at first. But there was one time her kayak got a hole and almost sank in the middle of the lake. I noticed and paddled frantically to save her."
Wu Peng got a bit excited at this point as well, saying, "I think my cousin mentioned once that she almost sunk while kayaking in the UK but was saved by someone. That could’ve been you!"
Li Hengze was first delighted but then puzzled, saying, "If that’s true, I should be her lifesaver. Why does she still dislike me so much?"
Wu Peng thought this over and conceded it made sense. He asked, "Did you ever try to lord it over her about saving her life or force her to do something she didn’t want to because of that?"
Li Hengze flicked Wu Peng’s head. "How could I? Do I seem like that kind of person? After saving her, I realized kayaking was pretty dangerous, so I almost stopped going to that place entirely afterward."
Wu Peng: "..."
He wasn’t sure whether to call him clever or dense.
Li Hengze didn’t feel like playing pool anymore. He sat off to the side and took out his phone to message Huang Yingya on WeChat: "Did you kayak in the UK once? Did I save you back then?"
Huang Yingya responded quickly: Yes.
Just one word?
Li Hengze immediately sent a laughing emoji: I couldn’t remember at all at first. It was Wu Peng who reminded me, and then I remembered. Seriously, though, since you knew, why didn’t you tell me earlier? Made me guess for ages.
Huang Yingya sent back a little girl’s "speechless" emoji.
Li Hengze couldn’t figure out what she was thinking, so he continued: Are you annoyed that I didn’t recognize you and feel I didn’t keep you in mind? Honestly, I don’t think it’s a big deal—I was just a high school junior back then. Forgetting people is pretty normal.
To his surprise, Huang Yingya seriously continued the conversation: Why did you suddenly stop kayaking back then?
Li Hengze: After seeing you almost drown, how could I dare keep going? I was so fat and not great at swimming. If I sank, wouldn’t my mom cry her eyes out?
Huang Yingya sent another "speechless" emoji before asking: How does someone like you manage to find a wife?
Li Hengze: Didn’t I get divorced? Sigh, stop reminding me—I already know I suck at talking, my personality’s unlikable, no wonder I got divorced.
Huang Yingya didn’t reply right away. Half an hour later, she sent him a message: Where are you? Want to go grab a drink?
Li Hengze glanced at the time. It was still early, so he agreed: Sure, where?
At your bar.
When Wu Peng and the others saw Li Hengze leaving so quickly, they were beside themselves. "You’ve only been here how long? And now you’re leaving again?"
Li Hengze didn’t mention he was going to see Huang Yingya. He didn’t want them to misunderstand and risk tarnishing her reputation, so he said, "There’s a workout buddy I’m meeting up with for a quick chat."
"Always fitness—your obsession is borderline crazy!"
Li Hengze chuckled and grabbed one of Wu Peng’s shirts: "Let me borrow this for a couple of days."
"Hey, that’s Armani; it’s expensive."
"I’ll transfer you the money later."
Li Hengze dashed off to his bar.
Huang Yingya was already there. She had changed into a black outfit—black shirt, black trousers—and paired it with golden heels, giving her an impressively sharp appearance.
She was exactly the "cool older woman" type that Li Hengze liked.
Hurriedly, he walked over, sat down across from her, and laughed nervously, "You got here so early. Don’t girls usually show up half an hour late for dates?"
Huang Yingya glanced up at him, "You think this is a date?"
Li Hengze: "...Meeting with a friend still counts as a date, doesn’t it?"
"And why can girls show up late by thirty minutes?"
"Well... isn’t that just conventional wisdom? Haha."
