Accidentally Married to the Big Shot -
Chapter 406: There Are House Rules?
Chapter 406: Chapter 406: There Are House Rules?
Huang Yingya picked up the bottle of wine, took a sip, then set the wine glass down and asked lightly, "You seem very experienced. Does your experience represent the behavior of every woman?"
"This... this sounds like boxing or something, haha." Li Hengze chuckled awkwardly.
"Are you talking about feminism? If you think so, then maybe. In my mind, if women truly want to gain status in society, they shouldn’t cling to melodrama. Whatever men can do, women should be able to do too. You can’t be late just because you’re a woman."
Li Hengze responded again with a dry chuckle and then called the waiter over.
The waiter, seeing the boss present, seemed to instantly understand. "Boss, do you want me to serve the one you usually like?"
"Yes, serve it. Give the lady a cup as well."
"Alright, boss."
Li Hengze continued discussing the topic they had chatted about previously on WeChat and said, "I truly didn’t remember that we met when we were so young. So, by that logic, I was your savior, wasn’t I?"
"Oh? You’re looking for some kind of repayment?" Huang Yingya remarked coolly.
Li Hengze cracked a joke that he thought was very amusing: "In TV dramas, usually the repayment is lifelong devotion, hahaha."
Huang Yingya glared at him, and he quickly shut his mouth and tactically drank his wine.
But soon, Huang Yingya spoke again, "If I were willing to repay you with lifelong devotion, would you marry me?"
Li Hengze spat his wine out right in front of Huang Yingya, spraying it all over her face.
She took a deep breath and barely managed to resist the urge to hit him.
Li Hengze hurriedly grabbed a napkin to wipe her face, but he just wiped blindly. Huang Yingya had come out wearing makeup, and now her eyeliner was smudged, forming raccoon eyes.
Li Hengze couldn’t hold back and let out two chuckles, but as soon as he noticed Huang Yingya’s rising anger, he immediately stifled his laughter.
"S-sorry, I really didn’t mean to. I spat the wine because I heard you say you’d marry me. Honestly, it’s your fault for making such a big joke!"
Huang Yingya finally couldn’t hold back. She shouted, "So, are you willing to marry me or not? Back then, by the lake, I already fell in love with you, but then you disappeared! After painstakingly finding out who you were, it turned out you were engaged. Now, I’ve waited until you’ve divorced. I’m giving you a chance!"
Li Hengze: "..."
...
After getting married, Liang Zhanbai moved into a newly purchased house.
His parents moved in with him as well. They held traditional values and believed that since their son was married, he had a duty to support his parents, so living together was a necessity.
Of course, they were demanding toward their daughter-in-law as well.
Since his previous two girlfriends broke up with him due to family reasons, Zhan Bai’s parents had prepared a document titled "Liang Family Rules" for Xiao Li right from the start, outlining strict requirements she had to follow.
Xiao Li took the document and glanced at it, immediately feeling a surge of anger.
She finally understood why Xiao Fen and Dr. Dang never married Zhan Bai. Dealing with in-laws like this—who could tolerate it?
Still, Xiao Li managed to suppress her temper.
Xiao Li’s full name was Li Sisi. She was 26 years old, originally from Yun City. Her family conditions were average. She grew up in a narrow lane within an urban village, with many siblings. She was stuck in the middle—older siblings above her, younger ones below—always overlooked, which made her adept at reading people’s expressions since childhood.
When her parents couldn’t pay attention to her, she spent her time playing in the lane and wandering around the neighborhood, becoming knowledgeable about social etiquette and gossip. She was keenly aware of who was doing what.
Upon seeing the Liang Family Rules, she merely smiled and said to Mr. and Mrs. Liang, "Dad, Mom, your rules are great! As a daughter-in-law, I should be frugal, respect my in-laws, and take good care of my husband. Don’t worry, I’ll definitely follow through."
Mr. Liang sighed and said, "It’s only because you seem so sensible that I agreed to let you marry into our family. You and Zhan Bai work at the same hospital, so you must know that his former girlfriends were way better than you in terms of conditions. Marrying you is really a compromise for our son."
Li Sisi laughed and said, "Exactly, Zhan Bai has such great qualities—I’ve been dreaming of marrying him. Rest assured, I’ll prepare dinner immediately. My cooking skills are top-notch."
Li Sisi opened the refrigerator only to find it empty—apart from a few apples and the drinks Zhan Bai usually liked, there weren’t any groceries.
"Hmm, no groceries?"
Mrs. Liang said, "Right, there aren’t any. Zhan Bai mentioned that after marriage, he’d give you part of his salary for groceries, so it’s your responsibility to buy food moving forward. We won’t buy it anymore."
Mrs. Liang mostly felt resentful. Having raised her son with great effort, now that he was married, his money for household expenses was going to his wife. As his mother, she’d never even touched his money.
Li Sisi didn’t get annoyed either. Instead, she enthusiastically grabbed a basket and went out to buy groceries.
Zhan Bai had bought a second-hand apartment near the hospital in a well-established neighborhood. There were nearby supermarkets, schools, and even a small farmers’ market where she could buy vegetables.
After returning with groceries, she saw many women in the small garden downstairs walking their kids. She went over to chat with them for a bit while picking vegetables.
The women noticed her—a young girl who had just bought groceries and was now picking vegetables—so they struck up a conversation. "How much did you pay per pound for the edamame?"
Li Sisi replied cheerfully, "3.2 yuan per pound. I bought it from an elderly man at the market—it was a bit cheaper than the supermarket, about 1 yuan less."
"Oh, is that elderly man still there? I want to buy some too."
"I’m not sure if he’s still there. When I went, there were a lot of people. He might have sold out by now. Auntie, if you’d like, I can give you some from what I bought. I can’t finish it all anyway."
Li Sisi warmly handed some edamame to the woman she was chatting with. When others saw this, they wanted some too, so she gave out handfuls to everyone around. Some used bags to hold them, some used plastic bags, and others directly stuffed them into their kids’ backpacks.
After distributing the edamame, the women thanked her and asked, "You live in Building One, right?"
Li Sisi replied generously, "Building Four, 703."
"Oh, so you’re new here? We haven’t seen you before."
"Yes, I just married into the neighborhood two days ago. My husband bought the apartment here."
One of the women asked, "You’re already buying groceries and cooking after just getting married?"
Li Sisi smiled bashfully and said, "My husband’s family has house rules. All cooking, food preparation, and chores must be done by the daughter-in-law—my in-laws can’t lift a finger. Otherwise, it would be considered unfilial. I’m afraid my husband won’t want me if I don’t follow the rules."
"Really? House rules? What kind of family is this?"
