Chapter 62: Antivenom

The doctors soon came over, and Doman was immediately attended to, with Patricia staying to watch the procedure the whole time. At a point, she got frustrated seeing them treat it with no urgency, but knowing how risky a venom removal was, she knew they were trying their best.

Any little mistake or delay could kill him. Venom moves fast, it could find its way to his heart or, even worse, his brain.

"Miss Patricia, were you able to identify the snake? The doctors need a better view of the type of snake they are dealing with," Kay, who was now standing beside Patricia, inquired, causing her to utter a silent "oh," looking away as she frantically searched her memory for the type of snake it was. Not all snake venoms were capable of causing migraines or affecting the body system, which narrowed it down to five types of snakes she could think of now.

It was a small snake with bright colors, and if its effects resembled those of a neurotoxic venom, then maybe... mamba? No, wait...a coral snake!

Turning to face Kay with widened eyes, she revealed, "It was a coral snake!" Her voice came out louder than she thought.

"Thank you," Kay said, returning to the side of the doctors, who were already searching for the antivenom they would use.

Relieved a little bit, Patricia chewed on her finger as she watched the doctors scramble around, causing her worry to grow. It had been over fifteen minutes since she told them which snake it was, why were they still looking for the antivenom?

"How far is it from here?" She heard the lead doctor ask, observing how restless they all looked.

Impatient, Patricia walked up to the lead doctor and questioned, "What is the hold-up for? He should be treated now," her voice raised a little, not out of anger, but out of worry.

"Who are you?" The doctor asked, sizing her from head to toe, clearly judging her. But she could care less about what he thought and demanded, "Tell me what is going on right now!" Her voice was now completely raised.

"She is a very important guest to him. Answer her," Kay butted in before the doctor could respond, causing him to swallow the words he was about to say.

"Ermm... the antivenom currently available is being withheld by the owner unless a specialized doctor comes for it himself. And right now, it’s not guaranteed he would give it out even if I went there, and I need to be here," the doctor divulged, causing Patricia to frown, irritated at the fact that treating a patient was now a gamble for most doctors.

"Did you tell him who needs the antivenom?" Patricia asked. Roman might be a private person, but his influence was strong in the city.

"No. Disclosing his current situation to the public will only bring trouble. He prefers handling personal affairs very discreetly," Kay interrupted, causing Patricia to sigh, frustrated. She could understand his point of view, and as much as she wanted to dispute that fact, she knew how crazy the public was. Letting the world know about his current situation might even kill him faster than the venom.

"Do we have any other options?" Patricia asked, ready to break into that hospital and steal the antivenom if that was all it took.

"We have antivenom ready in our hospital, but even if he could last till we get there, the ride might trigger the venom that we have managed to stabilize, and there’s no telling that he would survive it," the doctor revealed, causing Patricia to be speechless, dropping her gaze to the now unconscious Roman. The only reason he was in that state was because of her, and she would hate herself if he died because of her.

"How far is the drive?" She inquired, causing the doctor to stare back at her in disbelief, hesitating as he watched her like she was crazy.

"How many minutes’ drive?!" She repeated, this time yelling, causing the doctors to flinch.

"Forty minutes max, thirty minutes if the driver is fast. We can risk it, but we need to manage his respiratory system, which means we need to continue pumping oxygen for forty minutes non-stop," the doctor divulged, and she exhaled deeply, turning to face Kay.

"You will drive. And fast. We are going to the hospital," she ordered, before turning to face the doctor. "I will pump the oxygen for as long as you want. Move him."

Everyone stared at her, taken aback by her determination. Even Kay was stunned. And if Roman weren’t in that state, he would actually have the time to admire her properly.

Now on their way to the hospital, Patricia remained beside Roman, pumping the oxygen like her life depended on it. She had always thought there would never be a situation where she was unable to save a patient...until now. As knowledgeable as she was, she still couldn’t save those who were close to her in crucial times. She felt useless at that point and wasn’t proud of being a doctor. If all she could do was stand by, then maybe she wasn’t a real doctor yet.

The doctor sitting beside her offered to take control, but she insisted, saying it was too risky to switch hands, especially now that he needed the oxygen the most. At one point, they all felt bad for her, but seeing how she wasn’t even tired or bothered, they could only just watch as she kept on struggling.

"Are we almost there yet?" Patricia asked through the window that partitioned the ambulance.

"In a bit," Kay, who was behind the wheel, responded, and Patricia took a breath, telling herself everything was going to be alright.

Finally, they got to the hospital, and Patricia straddled Roman on the bed that wheeled him in, not even shaking a bit as she continued pumping the oxygen.

"Connect the patient to a ventilator," the lead doctor ordered, and they carried out every one of his instructions, relieving Patricia, who stood by the side, watching them prepare him for the antivenom.

Kay, who stood by the door, directed his gaze to Patricia, his eyes going low, landing on her hands, which were shaking and looked swollen. He took a step forward to talk to her, but she also took a step forward, her gaze intently fixed on Roman, which made him halt. Nothing he said could convince her to take care of herself right now. And it wasn’t like she was in an emergency state, she would be fine.

Roman was safely treated, and everything went back to normal. The tension in the room became more friendly when the lead doctor announced he was no longer in danger.

"Good work, everyone," the lead doctor said, causing them all to sigh in relief. "Williams, check up on him at intervals," he added, turning to face one of his underlings.

"That won’t be necessary. I will do that," Patricia cut in, and they all turned to face her, confused.

"She’s a doctor here. Dr. Patricia, the assistant surgeon who worked alongside Dr. Roman during the heart transplant," Kay announced when he saw their confusion, and they all looked stunned, taking a good look at Patricia.

"She was the one?" One of the doctors muttered, eyes widened as he darted his gaze over her.

When they heard of a miracle doctor, they were all taken aback and couldn’t wait to see who it was, only to be told she was no longer working in the cardiology department when they went looking for her. They tried to ask around, but it was like no one wanted her to be known, so no one divulged any information.

"I see. Then I will leave the rest in your hands," the lead doctor said, then removed his gloves and began walking toward the door, halting when he reached her side.

Dropping his hand on her shoulder, he patted it twice and said, "You are a good doctor." Then smiled briefly before leaving the ward. The remaining doctors followed a few seconds later, leaving Kay and Patricia alone.

"Your hands are shaking," Kay pointed out once they were alone, and she looked down at them, scoffing but in an amused manner. For some reason, as hurtful as her hands were right now, she felt even more strength and courage since becoming a doctor. This was the farthest she had ever gone for a patient. And if she hadn’t done it, she wouldn’t have known how far she could go.

"I am fine. I would be the one laying on that bed, probably dead, if it wasn’t for him," she said, then walked up to him, staring down at his unconscious form on the bed.

"I need to go back to inform the others on the yacht about the situation before they start worrying. Is there anything you need before I leave?" Kay asked.

Turning to face him, she remembered something and said, "My mother. We can’t leave her on the yacht alone with my family."

"Oh, we won’t be going back to the yacht anymore. I will bring back Miss Zara and your mum safely. About your mum...where would you like her to stay?" He asked.

"Can you please find her a hotel until Roman wakes? I will find her an apartment afterwards," she answered, and he nodded in response.

Patricia suddenly felt lightheaded, dropping her hands to her forehead as she tried to shake off the dizziness, but not a few seconds later, she fell to the ground.

"Miss Patricia!"
