Chapter 63: Real self

Back at the yacht, those who had gone for the game hunting were back, but with worried and anxious faces.

Zara kept pacing as she worried about her best friend, who was now declared missing. Though some of the elders who stayed behind on the yacht said they heard many footsteps going in and out earlier, they couldn’t say exactly what had happened.

"Why would you let her leave alone?!" Zara yelled, storming toward Syres, but was held back by Silas, who quickly stepped in to keep a distance between them.

"She’s not on that island, that I can say for sure. We searched around for two hours and found no traces of her or him," Jude, Syres’ assistant, relayed, only worsening their concerns.

"What about Kay? Did you see him?" Silas asked.

"No. He never followed us to the island, and he wasn’t on the yacht either," Jude replied, and Zara hissed in frustration.

"Wait! Isn’t that Roman’s assistant?" Cornell said suddenly, staring at something on the other side of the yacht, prompting everyone to scurry toward him to see what he was referring to.

"It is him!" Zara exclaimed, still not entirely relieved, but more assured knowing that Kay would likely have answers, unlike Syres’ useless assistant.

"Let’s hope he has answers," Silas muttered.

"Oh, I know he will," Zara responded, a smile tugging at her lips but for some reason, it felt like a threat to Silas. The way she was so confident he would have answers made it seem like she knew Kay more than she let on.

A few minutes later, Kay came aboard, and they all stared at him, waiting for him to approach.

"Where are you coming from, and where the hell are Roman and Patricia?!" Zara asked confidently, her arms folded across her chest.

"I am coming from the hospital, where they both are." He answered, prompting Zara to drop her arms and step forward, demanding, "Tell me what happened this instant! Who got injured? Why are they at the hospital?" Bombarding him with questions. f.r(e)e\webn.ovel.co\m

"Roman got bit while trying to scare off a snake that was about to attack Miss Patricia. We couldn’t get the antivenom, so he had to be transferred to the hospital before things got worse." Kay explained everything, causing everyone to gasp except Syres, who didn’t look shocked or calm. His reaction was mixed, but mostly filled with anger that his plan hadn’t worked.

"Oh my God. Is he okay?" Zara asked.

"Yes. Fortunately, Miss Patricia did everything she could to keep him breathing. I came here to bring you back, or you can stay longer if you want but they won’t be returning to the yacht. That’s the end of their vacation," he added.

"You bet I want to go home," Zara said as she walked past him, already heading inside the yacht to get her things.

"That’s probably just an excuse for him to leave the yacht. It’s not like he even attends the vacation every year," Cornell muttered and walked away, clicking his tongue as he found the whole situation too dramatic.

Ignoring him, Silas stepped forward and asked, "How is he now?"

"He’s stabilized, but he hasn’t woken up yet. You will have to take over for him until he’s back," Kay replied, and Silas exhaled.

"Let me see him first," he said.

...

Back at the hospital, it was already nearing evening. Patricia was now unconscious after being given some shots to strengthen her. The doctors said she had lingering injuries on her back that had weakened her body, otherwise, she shouldn’t have fainted just from pumping oxygen for thirty minutes. Though told to get more rest, she disobeyed their orders and returned to Roman’s side the moment the nurses left her.

Watching him now inhale and exhale without the ventilator made her feel satisfied. At least now, she knew all he needed to do was wake up.

She stared at his strand of red hair, intrigued, and leaned closer, raising her brows at it. She had always wondered if it was natural or dyed but what were the odds of being born with a streak of red hair?

Raising her hand, she reached toward his head, about to touch the red strand when a voice startled her.

"It’s not natural."

She jumped back, her heart skipping a beat.

Gasping, she dropped her gaze to him and said, "You are awake!"

The door creaked open, and Patricia turned to face it, her gaze landing on Silas, who entered first, followed by Kay, some doctors, and lastly Zara, whose eyes widened the moment she spotted Patricia.

"Pat!" Zara called out, pulling a sad face as she rushed forward and dragged her into a tight hug.

"I am fine. Stop making it look like I was the one hospitalized," Patricia scolded, embarrassed, but Zara didn’t care and kept hugging her.

"Dr. Roman, how do you feel now?" The lead doctor who treated him asked, and Roman sat up.

"Well, I am awake, which is fast. Does that count?" Roman replied, making the doctor laugh.

"You definitely are better now, but we can’t discharge you just yet. We need to monitor you overnight, the venom is a sneaky bastard," the doctor said, and Roman nodded, his gaze dropping to the snakebite on his arm.

"Was it a Coral snake?" Roman asked, removing his eyes from the bite and looking at the doctor.

"Yes. Wow, I have only heard of the intelligence of the Don of Doctors, witnessing it firsthand is amazing. How did you figure it out so quickly?" The doctor asked, clearly impressed.

"Well, I am sure you don’t want to know," Silas cut in, smiling firmly as though trying to dismiss the subject. Thankfully, the doctor got the hint and simply smiled it off, moving to check Roman’s vitals.

While the doctor, Silas, Kay, and Roman engaged in conversation, Zara and Patricia were deep in discussion in one corner of the room.

Amidst the whole scenario, Roman and Patricia’s gazes found each other, silent, raw, needy...as if they were two kids fighting over candy. Only the candy in this case, was them. Patricia’s heart raced, and when the realization hit her, she quickly averted her gaze and lowered her head, overwhelmed by what she was feeling at that moment.

Roman’s gaze lingered a little longer before returning to his group.

After the doctor confirmed everything looked fine and left, Roman noticed it was already dark and instructed, "Take her home," drawing Patricia’s attention.

"No. I will stay. The doctor said..." she began, but he cut her off.

"That wasn’t a suggestion. It was an instruction from a doctor to his underling. You resume work tomorrow."

Silence fell over the room.

Their gazes remained locked. No words, just a spark everyone in the room could feel. Still, they waited to see how Patricia would respond.

"Right. You are fine now. You are back to your real self," she said, her tone cold as she walked out of the ward, Zara following closely behind.

"You shouldn’t have been that harsh. I heard she fainted but refused to rest just so she could stay by your side. She saved your life, brother," Silas said, walking over to the water jug and pouring himself a glass.

"That’s exactly why I sent her home," Roman replied, getting out of bed and turning to Kay. "Where’s my phone?"

"Couldn’t you have said it nicely?" Silas shook his head but got no response. Turning to Roman, he found him staring back with a blank expression, which made him clear his throat and sip his water.

"Were you able to find him?" Roman asked Kay as he scrolled through his phone.

Kay shook his head. "No. Every trail we tried to follow was completely erased."

"He couldn’t have done that alone unless he had a backup. Have they been able to hack into his phone?" Roman asked with a sigh.

"Whoever is backing him must be extremely wealthy. The phone he’s using was custom-made specifically for his missions, it is not like any random phone out there. But we are getting close to tracing its origin," Kay explained and pulled something from his suit, handing it over to Roman.

Roman examined the oddly designed phone in his hands, inspecting both the front and back.

"Boss, do you also have that same person in mind?" Kay asked, as if reading Roman’s thoughts but was silenced with a single side glance.

"Keep investigating," Roman said, handing the phone back. Kay took it and walked out of the ward.

"You really dragged me back to the city for one of your investigations?" Silas asked. "I should have known something was up when you said we would be attending this year’s vacation. I almost believed my brother had finally fallen in love and was thinking about his wife for once."

"Yes," Roman replied, completely remorseless.
