Chapter 297: THE SITE TROUBLE

Astrid was still busy inspecting the construction site, her eyes scanning the area as Samuel pointed out some problems.

She was deep in conversation with him when Maddy rushed towards her, handing her the phone. "You have a call," she said, her voice urgent.

Astrid took the phone, placing it on her ear as she continued to point out issues with the construction.

"Hello," she let out her attention and was diverted as she noticed a man standing at the top of the building, wearing a mask. Her eyes narrowed, her heart skipped a beat, and just immediately she heard her name being called.

"Astrid left that place!" Samuel and Maddy called out in unison, pushing her away just as a big plank fell to the ground.

Astrid looked up, her eyes wide with fear, as she grabbed her head, but that strange man was not there anymore.

And then, a voice came from the phone, making her blood run cold. "Bitch!" Mattie’s voice spat.

She stumbled backward, her eyes fixed on the phone as if it were a snake that had bitten her. She checked the contact, her mind racing with questions. How did Mattie get her number?

"You shouldn’t worry, I am not out yet...but I will be. And when I am, you should better be ready. Because I’m going to kill you."

Astrid’s eyes flashed with anger, but she kept her cool. "How did you get my number?" she asked, her voice steady.

Mattie’s laughter was like a cold breeze on a winter night. "Leave that for a better discussion. Just hand over my hospital report now, or you might not live for long."

Astrid smirked at this, "What makes you think I have your report?" she asked.

Mattie’s voice trembled with rage. "Fuck it, give me my report! I am so sick right now, the station isn’t giving me the choice to take another test or even believe my words because of you."

Astrid gestured for Maddy and Samuel to stay back, her eyes fixed on the phone. "How about I tell you about the report over the phone?" she asked, her voice sweet.

"Tell me!" she yelled.

But Astrid had other plans in mind, "Oh, so you don’t know...not even Julian knows... I am so spoiled now that even Julian minds his tone with me."

"Hey! I don’t care about that! Give it to me me.." but her words were interrupted.

Astrid said "adios" and hung up, her heart still racing from the conversation.

She placed her hands on her chest, recalling the incident that had just occurred.

She couldn’t let Mattie know about her illness now. Otherwise, she would want to escape by all means and would even result in attacking her, knowing she might not have much time left.

Just as she was about to call Julian, his call came in. "What happened?" he asked, worriedly.

Astrid was stunned, glancing at Samuel and Maddy, but none of them had heard her phone call, so they just gave her a blank stare. "Julian, I..." she started to say.

"Get in the car, now," Julian interrupted, his voice firm. "I am on my way."

Astrid rolled her eyes, "Julian, I’m fine..." she started to say.

But Julian cut her off. "Don’t argue with me, Astrid. Get in the car. Samuel can proceed with the inspection."

Astrid’s eyes flashed with annoyance, but she knew better than to argue with Julian when he was in this mood.

Just as she was about to turn away, her eyes met with a weird face. She turned on the camera, taking a picture of the man. Astrid sent the picture to Julian, still on call with him.

"Research this man," she told Julian, her voice urgent.

Julian’s voice was firm. "I can hardly get his face well," he replied, already checking the picture she sent.

"Maybe I should Get closer to him.." she announced but before she could move, guards filled the zone instantly, cars pulling up in front of the building. It was Julian, dashing towards her immediately.

Everyone was stunned, watching as Julian pulled Astrid towards him, his eyes scanning her face.

"What the heck? How did you get here that quick?" she asked and he stared at her blankly.

"I was close by for a meeting," he answered just then three men came forward.

"Go investigate if the incident was intentional or a mistake," he instructed

"It was intentional," Astrid answered instead, "Mattie had called me at the same time, indicating this attack was from her."

Julian’s eyes narrowed, his face expressionless. "It seems Mattie has someone helping her from outside," he said, his voice low.

Astrid nodded in agreement. "But I don’t get how much connection she must have to still make that person do what she wants."

Julian’s face was a mask of calm, but Astrid could see the tension in his body. He was angry, and he was going to get to the bottom of this.

"We will investigate," Julian said, his voice firm. "And we will find out who’s helping Mattie."

"Do your job, detectives..."

"On it sir," they let out as they walked into the site, Julain pulled off Astrid’s helmet.

"Maddy... Samuel... I am sorry but I won’t be able to complete the job with you." she told them and they smiled.

"It’s fine, we will finish up." Maddy let out and Astrid was pulled into the car.

As they got into the car, Astrid bid farewell to Maddy and Samuel, waving at them through the window. The car drove off, leaving the construction site behind.

Astrid turned to Julian, "Mattie called because of her report," she divulged.

Julian’s eyebrows furrowed in confusion, he stared at her. "What report?"

Astrid’s eyes narrowed, her jaw clenched. "The report Maren got for me," she explained. "I found out that Mattie went for her test results before getting arrested, so I went to get it."

"Why?" he asked, still confused.

"I ordered Paige to give her some drugs, adding them to her food to mess with her brain."

Julian’s eyes widened as he stared at his wife, his face expressionless. "Why didn’t you tell me about this?"

Astrid’s shoulders shrugged nonchalantly, "I knew you wouldn’t be happy," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I don’t want that report to be with Mattie, but at the same time,"

Julian’s eyes narrowed, his face twisted in anger. "What does the file contain?" he asked, s

Astrid’s eyes dropped, "I found out that Mattie contracted a rare viral disease...and she’s pregnant."

Julian’s eyes widened, his face pale. "How could you not tell me?" he yelled, his voice echoing through the car. "You’re playing with her life, Astrid."

Astrid’s eyes flashed with anger, her jaw clenched. "I wanted her to feel the pain I felt," she retorted.

Julian’s face twisted in annoyance, "Would you be okay if you heard that Mattie died?" He asked, "For goodness sake, you will feel guilty for the rest of your life if something happens to her."

Astrid’s eyes flickered as her lips curled into a smirk. "I know that would be your reaction," she said, "That’s why I never told you in the first place."

"You’re not just playing with Mattie’s life, Astrid, you are playing with the life of an innocent child. This isn’t revenge, it’s inhumane."

Astrid turned to him in annoyance, "I don’t care," she fired back," She killed my mother. I have the right to do everything for my revenge."

"This isn’t about revenge, Astrid," his voice dropped this time so as not to hurt her feelings. "This is about your humanity."

"Larry, stop the car!" Astrid yelled but Larry was confused if to do or just continue driving.

"What do you want to do now?" Julian asked, "Get so far away from you! Because you are annoying me!"

"Stop the car," Julian let out and Larry looked at him in surprise, but he quickly pulled over.

Astrid looked at Julian in confusion, her eyes narrowing. "Yo..." he opened the car door and Astrid grabbed his hands.

"Where are you going?" she asked.

Julian’s face was expressionless, "I need to sort out the mess you’ve created, it would bounce back if I am not fast with it." He said, "What? It..".

"Astrid, you can’t just act without telling me things, it would hurt your career in the future... Once I clear this mess we will talk about how you won’t take action without letting me know."

"Ju... I am so.." But Julian was already out of the car, slamming the door behind him.

Astrid felt bad at this, she was so driven but in rage, she didn’t think about actions before taking them. "Drive me home," she instructed and Larry took a deep breath, his eyes flashing with concern.

"Astrid, he would take care of it... you don’t have to be worried." Astrid nodded as she looked out the window.

But as they turned a corner, a car collided with theirs, sending Astrid’s heart racing. Larry quickly stepped on the brake and stopped the car, "Fuck!" he growled and looked back at Astrid in concern.

"Are you okay ma’am ?" he asked worriedly and Astrid nodded, her eyes wide with fear. "I’m fine, what was that about?"

Larry looked forward, his eyes narrowing. Two guys in masks walked out of the other car coming toward them.

Larry’s eyes widened as he tried to reverse but another car stopped behind them.

Astrid looked around fear creeping into her heart, "Larry ... what is going on?"

"Ma’am, this isn’t good."
