Chapter 285: PAYBACK

TWO WEEKS LATER

Mattie’s eyes were all swollen, her skin pale as she shivered in cold even when there was none.

She sat on the couch in her room, staring blankly into space. It had been two weeks since the incident, and she had been confined to the house, cut off from the outside world.

No one had come to visit her, no one had checked in on her, only the maid assigned to her to give her food. She was alone, and the isolation was suffocating her.

She looked down at her hands, and they were shaking. She felt weak, vulnerable, and scared.

She had been throwing up constantly, and her body ached all over. She recoiled her hands in fear, as she grabbed her chest, feeling like she was having a heart attack.

"Anybody out there?" she called out but there was no response, her voice was becoming weak.

"Hello!" she called out and then Paige walked in with her lunch. She turned about to leave and Mattie’s eyes lit up with hope, and she quickly grabbed Paige’s hands, holding onto them tightly.

"Please," Mattie begged, her voice shaking with fear, Paige glanced at her shocked the first time she saw her this humble.

"You have to help me. I don’t know what’s going on. I’ve been feeling so sick, and I am scared. I need to go to the hospital."

Paige’s expression softened, and she looked at Mattie with fake concern.

"Ma’am, but I can’t." Paige let out.

Mattie’s eyes pleaded with Paige. "Please, I need to see a doctor. I have been feeling so sick. I promise I will be back before anyone knows. I just need to know what’s wrong with me."

Paige shook her head, her expression firm. "I am sorry, Ma’am. The boss was clear that you were not to leave the mansion. I could get in trouble if I let you go."

Mattie’s face fell, but she refused to give up. She grabbed Paige’s hands, her grip tight. "Please, and no one will ever know, I will pay you triple of your salary just allow me to go treat myself."

Paige looked at Mattie, her expression softening. She saw the desperation in Mattie’s eyes and knew she couldn’t deny her. "Okay, ma’am I will help you. But you have to promise me that you will come back as soon as you’re done."

Mattie’s face lit up with relief. "I promise. Thank you so much. I owe you one."

Paige smiled and nodded. "Just be careful, I don’t want anything to happen to you." Paige asserted

Mattie nodded and quickly made her way to the door. Paige led her out of the house, making sure that no one saw them. Luckily, Zach was not at home, so it was easy for them to slip out unnoticed.

The moment Mattie got out of the mansion, she ran to her car and drove out of the driveway. A big smile settled on Paige’s face as she pulled out her phone.

"Hello.." came in Astrid’s weak voice.

"Ma’am, she has finally gone out, I guess she is going to the hospital to check on her about her health." Aatrid paused on the side for a while

"Good, I will take it from here." Astrid hung up immediately.

*********

Mattie sat confidently in front of Tonia, a small, mischievous smile playing on her lips. She had gone to the hospital for a checkup and decided to reach out to her mum.

Tonia, taken aback by Mattie’s sudden visit, Mattie stared at Toni with a smirk seeing weak Tonia.

"Why are you here?" Tonia asked gruffly, her eyes narrowing slightly.

Mattie’s smile faltered for a moment, and she looked fake hurt. "I came to visit you, Mother," she answered. "I was expecting such a warm welcome. Guess the cell room is messing with you"

Tonia’s expression remained unreadable, but she leaned forward slightly, her eyes locked on Mattie’s.

"You look sick yourself, has everything been going well with you?" Tonia asked, retorted.

Mattie’s eyes flashed with anger, and she leaned forward, her little smile disappeared already.

"If you are going to make jokes about me, Mother, perhaps you should remember where you are. You’re not exactly in a position to be throwing stones."

Tonia’s eyes never left Mattie’s, but she nodded slightly, as she smiled.

"But, I don’t think you will stay out for long, I am pretty sure you will join me soon here." Mattie rolled her eyes nonchalantly at this.

"Well, I know you are the cause of Elizabeth’s death?"

Mattie’s hands laned closer to Tonia having a teasing look. "But there’s no way you can prove that to the world and have me locked up in here."

Tonia’s smile grew wider, and she leaned back in her chair, still having that calm smile plastered on her face. "We will see about that,"

"Well, I won’t because I am leaving the country today," she announced, Tonia’s eyes widened in shock, and she leaned forward, her voice urgent.

"How did you manage that?" she demanded.

Mattie’s smile grew wider, and she leaned back in her chair, a look of triumph on her face.

"Money can buy a lot of things, Mother," she answered, "Including loyalty."

"Wow... you know how to ah the game better than me," Mattie clapped her hands, "A reward for myself," he answered.

"Aren’t you worried about where I get the money from?" Tonia’s face creased immediately.

"You’re safe? Remember I am the only one who knows the password to it," Tonia slammed the desk in anger and Mattie laughed out loud.

"Astrid I promise you won’t get far before Astrid catches her. Astrid is more sly than you think."

Mattie replied, "But I am leaving right from here. I just thought she shouldn’t leave without greeting my mom first."

Tonia bit her lips at this as she watched the girl she took care of from Babsy, how did she turn on her?

"It’s my karma for being evil towards my sister. I must be facing It now, not only did I raise the wrong child but I raised my daughter killer."

Mattie stood from her chair, "Well, it’s good you know that already because I never planned to tell you."

Tonia nodded, wiping the little tears slipping from her eyes, "Fine... I would happily accept this punishment, but I want you to know I gave you a little gift."

Mattie stared at her, wondering what she was talking about. Tonia smiled and said, "You should go check yourself into the hospital. Aren’t you feeling anything weird in your body?"

Mattie was shocked. "What’s it about? What is in my body" she asked.

Tonia smiled. "Well the man you slept with... how did you think she knew exactly where you were in the morning?"

Mattie stomped the table in shock. "You were behind it?" Tonia cackled at this.

"You are smart, but I feel you should relax and listen to the whole story."

Mattie’s hands were beginning to fidget,

"Not just one or two slept with you... or maybe they are four..." Tonia trailed off now staring back at Mattie.

"You witch!" Mattie yelled but Tonia gestured for her to shut her mouth.

"Well, that is just a little reveal, because this is where my gifts come in." She paused, staring at Mattie’s reaction before she finally dropped the bombshell.

"Well, I found out that three of the men who had spent their lively moment with you had a retroviral virus."

Mattie’s eyes widened, not able to hold it in again, her knees weak and she fell to the ground.

Tonia stood up from her chair, smiling. "At first, I felt guilty for hurting you that way, but after knowing the real you, I am giving you this as payback for killing my daughter."

With that, Tonia walked off, leaving Mattie on the ground.
