Chapter 286: CLEAN UP
Mattie’s legs felt like jelly as she stumbled out of Tonia’s cell room, still reeling from the shocking news.
She couldn’t believe Tonia, someone she cared for and trusted as a mother, could be so cruel. How could she do such a thing? She tricked her and made her think Lamdon was the one behind the men she thought took advantage of her.
But it was all set up by Tonia, making five men sleep with her, age was too drunk to even know what had happened to her that night.
As she walked outside, Mattie’s mind racing with thoughts of the men she had slept with and the retroviral virus, she quickly dialed the doctor’s number. Only then she recalled how the doctor had reacted when she told him her symptoms.
She bit her fingernails as waited for him to respond, "Hello," the doctor said.
"When will the test results be ready?" she asked, trying to keep her voice steady.
The doctor replied, "In a few days, ma’am."
Mattie’s anxiety spiked. "Can you make it fast? I will pay double."
The doctor agreed, and Mattie hung up, feeling a sense of desperation wash over her.
"No, I won’t contact it... it was just once," she whispered to herself.
Just then, her phone rang, she picked up in a rush and only then did she know It was Astrid.
Mattie was about to hang up when Astrid stopped her, "Relax, Mattie," Astrid said, "It seems this might be the last call you make before you lose access to every freedom you have ever had."
Mattie’s confusion turned to alarm. "What are you talking about?"
Astrid’s laughter sent chills down Mattie’s spine. "Enjoy the little gift I sent you."
Mattie’s phone beeped, indicating an incoming message. She clicked on it, and her eyes widened in horror. The video of her killing Astrid’s mother, and her high school mate, was posted online.
Mattie’s world crumbled around her. She fell to the ground, her phone slipping from her fingers.
"No... No... No.." she mumbled staring at her phone, "This can’t be... " she let out, and Just then, police sirens blared outside. Officers stormed out of the station, surrounding Mattie. "Mattie, you’re under arrest for the murder of Sarah Johnson and Elizabeth Gilbert."
Mattie’s eyes darted wildly as she tried to refuse, but the officers were too strong. They handcuffed her and dragged her away, throwing her into the back of the police station.

Astrid gently dabbed at her husband’s face, wiping away the beads of sweat that had formed on his brow.
Two weeks had passed since the incident, and Julian still lay motionless, his eyes closed as if in deep slumber.
Astrid’s eyes welled up with tears as she gazed at his peaceful face, her heart aching with every passing day wondering when he would stand up and embrace her again like he used to do.
Just then, Maren burst into the hospital room, her voice loud and boisterous.
Astrid’s head snapped up, her eyes narrowing as she glared at Maren. "Shh, not so loud," Astrid whispered, her voice trembling.
Maren’s face fell as she apologized, her eyes darting to Julian’s still form.
"I am so sorry, Astrid. I brought some food for you, though you might be hungry." Astrid shook her head, her eyes clouding over. "I don’t feel like eating, Maren. But thank you."
Maren’s face creased with concern as she set the food down on the bedside table.
"Astrid, you need to take care of yourself. I made sure to get all your favorites. I have asked Miles to go round the city for this." but Astrid ignored not looking at her way.
"Astrid, you have been cooped up in this hospital room for days, barely eating or sleeping." Astrid’s gaze drifted back to Julian, her eyes filling with tears.
Before Maren could continue, Becky walked into the room, a look of delight laced on her face.
"Astrid, I have some news," Becky announced, "Mattie’s been arrested. The evidence you released was enough to put her behind bars."
Astrid’s head jerked up, her eyes locking onto Becky’s. For a moment, she forgot about her grief, forgot about Julian’s still form beside her.
As the news sank in, Astrid felt a wave of exhaustion wash over her. Her plan worked, she was able to puff Mattie behind bars.
She slumped forward, her elbows on her knees, her head in her hands.
Becky rushed to her side, embracing Astrid’s frail form. "Oh, Astrid, I’m so sorry. I know this can’t bring back what’s been lost, but maybe it can bring some closure." Astrid’s body shook with sobs, not only was she crying for her husband but for her late mother. She finally arrested the one who had killed her mother.
As she cried, Becky stroked her hair, whispering words of comfort in her ear. "You need to take care of yourself, Astrid. Julian would want that. He’d want you to be strong, to keep going." Astrid’s sobs slowed, her breathing ragged as she lifted her head.
Becky’s eyes met hers, filled with compassion and concern, but something else was bothering her.
"Astrid, sweetie, when was the last time you bathed? You’re starting to... stink." Becky’s words were gentle, but Astrid felt a sting of embarrassment.
She looked down at herself, realizing that she had indeed neglected her personal hygiene.
Julian had always been meticulous about cleanliness, and the thought of him waking up to find her in this state was unbearable. Astrid’s eyes snapped up to Becky’s.
"I need to go home," Astrid announced, "I need to take a bath, to feel human again." Becky glanced at Marena and she nodded, helping Astrid to her feet immediately.
"Maren, can you take Astrid home? Help her get settled and have a warm bath?" Maren nodded, slipping her arm around Astrid’s waist.
"Mum... please take care of him." Becky smiled at this, "Of course my love I would." he replied.
Maren helped Astrid out and inside the car as she drove off the hospital premises.
Astrid stepped into her home which now looks cold, she was used to walking inside with her husband or going inside with the thought that her husband was inside.
Maren followed closely behind, a file clutched in her hand. Astrid’s eyes narrowed slightly as she turned to Maren. "What’s that?" she asked.
Maren hesitated for a moment before holding out the file. "It’s the test results Mattie had done before... before she was arrested. Miles had given it to me for keepsake"
Astrid’s eyes snapped to the file, her hand reaching out to snatch it from Maren’s grip.
"Hey.. We might.." Before her word trailed Ashe Astrid pulled it open, her eyes scanned the pages, her expression unreadable.
Then, a slow smile spread across her face, her eyes gleaming with satisfaction.
"This is interesting news," Astrid murmured, her voice dripping with triumph. "Paige did her job well."
