Chapter 263: BITING MORE THAN YOU CAN CHEWeck
Astrid quickly through the crowded, dimly lit corridors of the cartel’s hideout, her eyes scanning the sea of faces for any sign of Mattie. She wants to let her go that way, she needs to know what those files were for.
The air was thick with the smell of smoke and sweat, Astrid’s heart pounded in her chest as she pushed through the throngs of people, her senses on high alert.
As she walked, the din of hushed conversations and muffled footsteps enveloped her, making it difficult to focus.
Astrid’s phone rang, shrill and insistent, but she ignored it, her attention fixed on finding Mattie.
Her stomach churned with anxiety, and a wave of nausea washed over her as she dodged a group of rough-looking men.
Astrid’s breath came in short gasps, and her palms grew slick with sweat. She felt like she was being swallowed whole by the cartel’s dark, oppressive world. She shouldn’t be here, she is sure Julain will almost go crazy knowing she is in this kind of place.
Just when she thought she’d never find Mattie, Astrid spotted her, hurrying toward the same location where she had met Landon earlier.
Astrid’s heart skipped a beat as she quickly followed, her eyes locked onto Mattie’s retreating.
She knew she couldn’t approach Mattie and she couldn’t continue tagging along with her so she needed a plan B.
As she closed in, Astrid pulled out the sound records she had given her, a small, innocuous-looking device that would allow her to monitor Mattie’s movements and also listen to whatever things she would be saying.
Astrid covered her face with a small as she walked so fast, to meet Mattie that she numbed into her.
"Sorry," Astrid muttered, as Mattie’s bag fell to the ground, "Oh my... I am so sorry." She apologized again as she swiftly slipped the device into her bag.
Mattie didn’t seem to notice, already annoyed at the way she was constantly getting bumped into.
She snatched the bag from Astrid, "Get out!" she yelled as she found her way to her destination, not suspicious at all of Astrid’s movements.
Astrid, on the other hand, throws their hands up in victory at how she had managed to plant the device without arousing Mattie’s suspicion.
Finally, Astrid got out of the crowded place and reached the safety of her car, where she pulled out her phone and waited. It didn’t take long for Mattie to make her move.
She got into her car with a huge smile, knowing it was a success.
"Landon..." Mattie’s scratchy voice came through the phone, and Astrid’s lips curled into a triumphant smirk. She had done it.
"The last time I checked, a daughter isn’t supposed to call her father by her name." Landon retorted and Astrid heard Mattie scoff and wanted to be ready for conversation like that.
"I am only accepting to work with you because I need to destroy Astrid," she told him.
"So you get the document Which can ruin Zach?" Landon asked and Astrid’s eyes narrowed, trying to grasp the meaning of their words.
"These are the files you wanted, they contain property," she paused for a while before she proceeded.
"Everything he ever owned, you gaining possession of these could destroy him."
Astrid gasped at this, "What the fuck?" she growled, about to step out of the car, Julian’s car appeared before her car making her freeze.
"Ju... Julian.." she called in shock, as she watched him alight from his car, the look on his face showed he wasn’t happy at all.
But how did he find out her location? She thought. "You see why I call you dumb?" Landon’s voice rang out from her phone, gaining back Astrid’s attention.
"This still proves he owns it, if you want to get his property to be mine and destroy him, you will have him sign a file of transfer." Just then Astrid’s car door opened.
"What the fuck Astrid?" Julain bellowed but Astrid placed her finger on his lip shutting him up, so he would listen.
"I will send you the necessary files, you just have to make Zach sign them... and then this won’t be his anymore." Julian stared at Astrid confused but still couldn’t say a word.
"What would you gain from giving me the possession of Zach just like that," Landon asked again.
"Heard, you are a night shadow... kill without a trace, then you will need to do the same for me, have Astrid killed, and out of Julian’s Life." Julian’s eyes narrowed upon hearing this.
"I will comfort Julain during his grieving period and then make him fall for me again," Julain hands trembled in anger.
"Kill Astrid?" Landon’s voice repeated and Astrid’s ears perked up.
"Well I just made a deal with her," he paused and a scratch sound was heard before he talked again.
"She is also useful to me, but I will only work for any of you who proves yourself right. After all, she was supposed to be my daughter." Julian, not able to listen to this anymore, snatched Astrid’s phone from her.
He pulled her out of the car and Larry came forward, "Drive this home," he ordered.
"Hey... I am still listening to that." Astrid let out trying to reach for her phone.
Julian ignored her instead and pulled her along with him, before anyone could see them both he shoved her into his car and he also got in the driver’s seat.
"Put on your seat belt," he ordered and before she could control herself he drove out of the vicinity.
His fist was tight against the steering wheel as he drove so fast, "Julian.. you know I hate fast driving, slow down." she grumbled.
"Julian..." she called him again and then he slowed down now, but she could still feel his anger.
"Hey, he threatened me with my grandad, okay... I had no choice but to honor his call." Julian didn’t say anything, his eyes focused on the road.
"Julian..." she called this time making a puppy face, placing her palm on his thigh, "I had no other choice."
Just then, he slammed on the brakes, making a screeching sound that echoed through the air.
Astrid wasn’t expecting it, and the sudden stop propelled her forward. But Julian was quick to react, placing his hand on the dashboard, to stop her head from hitting it.
Astrid’s heart racing, she looked up at Julian, her eyes wide with surprise. "What’s wrong with you?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly.
Julian’s jaw clenched in a mixture of anger and concern. "Are you asking what the fuck is wrong after you went to make a deal with a killer?"
Astrid swallowed hard seeing he was furious, "Don’t yell at me." she muttered under her breath but he heard Julian take a deep breath doing everything in him not to lose it.
"Three-strike cartel? Astrid? The fuck! You know how scared I was seeing your location says you were here." Astrid lip-pouted as she leaned closer to him.
"You care that much about me?" she asked with a teasing smile but he wasn’t having it instead he pulled her forward.
"Henceforth you move with guards, you wouldn’t be living anywhere without my order,"
"But.".
"No buts Astrid, you are biting more than you can chew these days."
