Chapter 256: BREAKFAST WITH FRIENDS
Astrid woke up to the warmth of Julian’s body beside her. She snuggled deeper into his arms, feeling so comfortable being this close to him.
She glanced up at him to see him still sleeping, peacefully. She grinned widely, seeing the wish she prayed for was finally coming to pass.
"Am I that handsome to admire, that you forgot how to breathe?" Her eyes fluttered open in shock as she swallowed and then Julian opened his eyes.
"Finally awake," he whispered, his voice husky with sleep. "I missed you," he added.
Astrid eyes lit up at this, "You’re the one who went out to skew things and sedate me, and now you miss me?" she teased.
Julian chuckled, embracing her tightly. "I wasn’t used to seeing you sleep during the day while I went about my business," he admitted.
Astrid scrunched up her face, her expression serious. "Whatever you did, I hope it wasn’t something that would put Mattie through pain."
Julian’s expression turned somber, and he remained silent for a moment before asking, "Are you hungry?"
"Why don’t I trust this look? You helped Mattie right?" she asked, already having that irritating look.
"Fine you got me there, you said you wanted to be the one to put her through pain, if we are not fast enough she would be dead."
Astrid does not want to push his words and get herself annoyed because of him.
"Don’t care," she mumbled and he nodded.
Just then her stomach growled, reminding her she was hungry. "I want what you cook, only that can I forgive you for helping her," she said, her eyes sparkling with mischief.
Julian smiled, nodding his head in agreement. "I will go cook while you have your bath."
Astrid grumbled, not feeling like getting out of bed. "I don’t feel like it," she said, folding her arms across her chest.
Julian chuckled, sitting beside her, as he helped her sit but she still snuggled into his chat enjoying the warmth.
"Should I do it for you? But you’ll eat late," he teased.
Astrid glared at him, "Nope, go cook now, I will have my bath," she let out.
Julian placed a gentle kiss on her forehead. "Now you are talking," he whispered, before getting up and leaving the room.
Astrid watched him walk, a smile still playing on her lips. She turned her attention to her phone.
The moment she turned it on, worried messages from her grandfather and Maren filled the phone. She sighed, reading through the messages. Then she texted her granddad.
"Granddad... I am doing well now, and hope to see you soon. Love you." she sent. She was about to drop her phone when a new message popped up from an unknown contact.
"Hi, Astrid... I don’t know how to go about this, but can we please see?" the message read.
Astrid’s curiosity was piqued, and she texted back, asking who it was. The response came quickly like he had been waiting for the chance. "It’s Zach."
Astrid’s hand went cold, now aware of who he was, the man everyone now claimed to be her father.
She took a deep breath, trying to process her emotions, guess he finally found out.
"Alright," she replied, her fingers trembling slightly, "I will be expecting... your message when you are ready." Zach sent and she could only stare at her phone.
Just then, a notification popped up on her phone. It was an article about Mattie not being a real Adam. Astrid’s eyes widened as she read through the article, her mouth dropping open in shock.
Astrid’s eyes scanned the comments section, filled with hate comments and messages of outrage.
Mattie’s followers had drastically reduced, and her social media pages were filled with vile comments and messages.
Astrid even saw how the press had swam in on Mattie embracing her more, and then a smirk played on her lips, satisfied with what she was seeing.
She finally knew how it felt to be bullied, Astrid thought, a sense of satisfaction washing over her.
********
Astrid walked into the living room, only to see Maren and Miles busy arranging breakfast on the dining table.
The absence of the maids was noticeable, guess he sent them to leave for today.
Just then Astrid’s eyes met Maren’s as she approached her, "Oh my goodness how are you doing dear?" Maren asked as they shared a warm embrace, Maren gently brushed Astrid’s hair aside.
Astrid nodded, trying to manage a smile. "I am trying to manage," she replied.
"Hey Astrid, finally you are out of your room," Miles announced, joining the warm hug.
Julian emerged from the kitchen, a plate in hand, his eyes narrowed as he noticed Miles’ closeness to Astrid.
Miles, sensing Julian’s unease, pulled away, "Hey asshole she is my sister remember?" Julian only gives a blank expression.
"If you ever act like a jerk, she can report you to me," Miles said with a grin now looking back at Astrid.
"Astrid, it’s nice knowing you are my sister now. I will find a way to make up for the time we haven’t spent together since we were kids."
Astrid nodded in agreement, her eyes sparkling with delight. "Julian has always been a jerk and would always support Mattie," she said, moving closer to him as she pulled his arms.
"You are going to teach him some lessons won’t you?" Julian let out a deep chuckle.
"Of course, I am ready to face any punishment that would be given by you, love." Astrid Gould only blushed at this.
Just then Maren cleared her throat, drawing everyone’s attention. Astrid grinned at this and let Miles go.
"Hey I have my man, you don’t have to make things that obvious." Astrid teased but the look on Maren meant something else.
"Mattie is my sister," she finally dropped the bomb, leaving the whole room silent for a few minutes.
"What?"Julian finally broke the silence.
Maren took a deep breath before continuing. "I kind of had my doubts in the past, but since she had her parents I never really cared too much until now."
Astrid’s eyes narrowed. "Is your father Landon?" she asked, her voice firm.
Maren nodded, her eyes welling up with tears. "Yeah... he was my father, but I denounced him. He’s always been an asshole and would abuse me."
Miles immediately moved to comfort Maren, helping her sit down and wrapping his arms around her. Astrid sat down beside them, her eyes filled with concern.
Maren took another deep breath before continuing. "My mother... Well, I know nothing about her. I was abandoned as a kid and have always lived with my dad. He would always get into trouble and take his anger out on me when he got home."
Astrid’s eyes widened in shock, relating to everything she had faced in the past, she never knew Maren grew up in that kind of a family.
"I got my cunning ways from him, yes I lived with a cunning man so I could be like him," she said.
"Not able to take more abuse from him, I ran away from him when I had managed to save enough money to enroll myself in fashion school... Then I used my cunning ways to get into the social ladder." She took a deep breath.
"Even though it was a bad influence on me, it still helped a bit... I never expected him to show his face again and cause issues for everyone again."
Astrid’s eyes filled with tears as she listened to Maren’s story. She moved closer to Maren, embracing her tightly.
"I understand your feelings, Maren," Astrid said, her voice filled with emotion. "You don’t have to worry about it. You are the same to me, the one I love and care about."
Astrid’s phone rang, breaking their embrace. She picked up the call, her smile fading as she listened to the voice on the other end.
"Mr. Jerkins?" Astrid called, her voice hesitant.
"Young Miss, I have some bad news," Mr. Jerkins said, his voice somber. "Your grandfather just had a heart attack. He’s been rushed to the hospital."
Astrid’s eyes widened in shock, and she felt like her world had been turned upside down.
