Chapter 230: HIDING THE TRUTH FROM HIM
Maren’s hands trembled as she held the file, her mind racing with questions.
How did Miles get her medical report? Did he know about her pregnancy? The seal on the envelope was still intact, which meant Miles might not have seen the contents. But why did he have it in the first place? She was still in a state of shock wondering the possible reasons Miles had asked for this.
She quickly dialed her doctor’s number, her heart pounding in her chest. After a few rings, her doctor picked her up.
"Hello, Doctor Smith’s office," a cheerful voice said.
Maren took a deep breath, trying to calm her nerves. "Doctor, it’s Maren. I need to ask you something."
"Of course, Miss Maren. What’s going on?" her doctor asked, concerned creeping into her voice.
Maren hesitated, unsure of how to phrase her question. "Why is my medical report with Miles?" she asked finally.
There was a pause on the other end of the line. "I...I’m so sorry, Maren. He forced me to give it to him. He threatened to make my life hell if I didn’t comply."
Maren’s eyes widened in shock. She felt a chill run down her spine as she realized the extent of Miles’s actions.
"What? And you didn’t even think of informing me before telling him this?" she asked, already irritated.
"I am sorry Miss Maren but you know in terms of power we dare not mess with either Adams or Logan.."
Just then, the door opened, and Maren quickly hid the file, hanging up the phone immediately, her heart thumping hard.
Luckily, it was only Kayla, the housekeeper. "Oh.." Maren let out in relief, "It’s just you." she stated.
"Miles said he’s busy, so I should let you know that dinner will be served soon," Kayla said, her eyes scanning the room.
Maren swallowed hard, trying to compose herself. "Thank you, Kayla."
As Kayla turned to leave, she noticed Maren fidgeting with the file. "Is everything okay, Maren? You look like you have seen a ghost."
Maren hesitated, unsure of how much to reveal. "I...I just got some unexpected news," she said finally.
Kayla’s expression softened. "I hope you’re not sick, dear."
Maren shook her head, feeling a wave of relief wash over her. "No, it’s not that. But I need to ask you something."
Kayla nodded, her eyes curious. "What is it, dear?"
Maren took a deep breath. "Has Miles seen this file?" she asked, pulling up the files.
Kayla shook her head. "No, dear. It arrived this morning while Miles was at work. So I had just dropped it in his room so he could go through it when he is less busy.".
Maren let out a sigh of relief. She felt a weight lift off her shoulders.
"Kayla, I need to ask you for a favor," Maren said, her eyes locked on the housekeeper’s.
Kayla nodded, her expression curious. "What is it, dear?"
Maren hesitated, unsure of how to phrase her request. "I need you to keep this a secret. Miles can’t know about it."
Kayla’s eyes widened in surprise, one thing they shouldn’t do is mess with him."But why, dear? What’s going on?"
Maren took a deep breath, trying to convince Kayla. "I just need to be the one to tell him, okay? It’s something personal, and I need to handle it myself."
Kayla looked uncertain, her eyes darting back and forth. "But Maren, I hardly keep secrets from Miles. I feel like I am betraying him by keeping this from him."
Maren understood Kayla’s concerns, but she knew she had to convince her, or else her lovey-dovey time would end as soon as possible.
"I know it’s a lot to ask, Kayla, but please. I need to do this. I don’t want to get Miles worried." she lied and Kayla’s expression softened.
Maren knew Miles was only with her because of guilt. If he finds out about this, he will leave her for sure.
"Oh," she hesitated.
Maren nodded, feeling a lump form in her throat. "Please, Kayla. Just keep this between us."
Kayla nodded finally, even though she was still not satisfied with this
"I will keep your secret, Maren. But you have to promise me one thing."
"What’s that?" Maren asked, her eyes locked on Kayla’s.
"You have to tell Miles the truth soon," Maren nodded. "I promise I will, and Thank you, Kayla."
As soon as Kayla left, Maren quickly picked up the file and began to tear it into pieces. She felt a sense of relief wash over her, knowing that she had managed to keep the truth from Miles for now.
But as she looked at the torn pieces of paper, she couldn’t shake off the feeling that she was playing with fire. She knew that keeping this secret from Miles would only lead to more trouble down the line.
And yet, she couldn’t bring herself to tell him the truth now.

Maren walked into the dining room now looking fresh and in Miles’s hoodie and shorts, her eyes scanning the room as she searched for Miles. There she found him walking out of his office, a warm smile on his face.
"Hey," he called out, "I am sorry about the sudden meeting. I hope you’re not mad at me."
Maren shook her head, forcing a smile onto her face. "No, I am fine," she said, her voice a little too bright delighted he had gone for that meeting.
Miles’s eyes narrowed slightly at her behavior, but he didn’t push the issue. Instead, he led her to the dining table, where Kayla was waiting with a warm smile.
As they sat down, Maren caught Kayla’s eye, and they shared a brief, guilty glance. Miles didn’t seem to notice but instead began to dish out Maren’s meal.
"Thank you," Maren said, her voice a little softer now.
As they began to eat, Miles watched her, admiring her beauty, and couldn’t help but wonder how he had got this lady to fall for him. While Maren on the other hand felt a pang of guilt, knowing that she was hiding something from him.
Suddenly, Miles spoke up, "Kayla, did you receive any files from anyone today?"
Maren’s eyes widened in shock, and she coughed, almost choking on her food. Miles quickly handed her a glass of water, his eyes concerned.
"Easy, baby," he said, his voice soothing. "Eat gently."
Maren took a deep breath, trying to calm down. But Miles’s question had left her reeling, hoping he wouldn’t be suspicious.
Then Kayla spoke up, her voice a little too quick. "No, Miles, I didn’t receive any files."
Miles’s eyes flicked to Maren, and he smiled, a small, knowing smile. "Are you sure, Kayla?" he asked again, his gaze not leaving his girl.
Kayla hesitated, her eyes darting to Maren and then back to Miles. "I...I’m sure," she stammered.
Miles’s eyes narrowed slightly, and he turned to Maren. "I think we are done here, I am filled up," Maren announced wanting to get out of this situation as soon as possible.
Miles didn’t bother asking questions and then they both walked back to the bedroom. The moment they got inside Miles’s eyes seemed to bore into her soul.
Maren felt like she was walking on eggshells, waiting for the other shoe to drop. Miles’ eyes moved to his cabinet and the file which he had seen there when he first entered his room was no longer there and he knew his girl had something to do with it.
It wasn’t the first time Maren was playing a mind game with her, he knew she would react this way.
Just then his eyes went to the trash can. He moved there leaving her on edge. "Maren.." he called and she gulped down nervously.
"Did the file on my cabinet pissed you off so much that you need to tear it into pieces?" Maren couldn’t give a response.
"I... I don’t know what you are talking about, I am so tired. Good night." she stuttered finding her way to the bed but Miles’s next word stopped her.
"Are you scared I will find out about your fake pregnancy,"
