Mattie paced back and forth in her room, her nails bitten to the quick as she anxiously awaited the clock striking 12 am. Her eyes never leave the clock, her mind still can’t wrap around who would know her secret aside from Stephan.

The mysterious message she had received earlier had put her on edge, and she couldn’t shake off the feeling of unease that had settled in the pit of her stomach. She had to find ways to get the location of the message but it was all futile.

As she paced, she felt a wave of nausea wash over her, and she rushed to the bathroom, throwing up the contents of her stomach.

She leaned against the cool tile, feeling miserable and frustrated. Why was this happening now, when she was so close to achieving her goal? Her hands were on her stomach.

"For goodness sake, you don’t come through the father you were supposed to, now you won’t make me feel at ease?"

Despite her physical discomfort, Mattie’s mind was racing with excitement and worry.

Her mother had told her that the ceremony would take place in just two days, and she was eager to finalize the arrangements.

What made her so pissed is that she had been trying to reach Julian for days now and Astrid is the one with his phone anytime she calls. He wasn’t responding to her calls or messages.

She wanted them to have a heart-to-heart talk but all he does is avoid her, she takes a deep breath at her crazy ways of life, all this is because of the butch Astrid she thought.

Just then, her phone buzzed, and she rushed to pick it up, hoping against hope that it was the mysterious caller on the other end.

But her heart sank as she saw that it was just a spam message. She bit her fingers repeatedly, feeling irritated and helpless.

The hours ticked by at a glacial pace, and Mattie found herself growing more and more agitated.

She couldn’t concentrate on anything, and her mind was a jumble of worries and fears. Why was this person contacting her? What did they want? These questions kept ringing in her head.

Finally, the clock struck noon, and Mattie’s phone rang, shrill and insistent. She picked it up quickly, her heart racing with anticipation and fear.

"Hello?" she said, trying to keep her voice steady.

There was a pause on the other end of the line, and for a moment, Mattie wondered if she had imagined the whole thing. But then a low, male unfamiliar voice spoke up, sending shivers down her spine.

Mattie’s eagerness could be noticed, and the voice on the other end of the line noticed it, proceeding with a wicked smile. "Do you miss me, Mattie?" the voice teased.

Mattie’s fury was instant. "You think this is a joke?" she spat. "You’re trying to ruin my life, and you think it’s funny?"

The voice broke into laughter, the sound sending shivers down Mattie’s spine. "Oh, Mattie, you are so predictable," the voice said, still chuckling.

Mattie’s anger boiled over. "Tell me what you know, or I will track you down and make your life miserable," she threatened.

The voice’s laughter stopped, and for a moment, there was silence. Then, the voice spoke up, its tone dripping with malice. "Mattie? That’s how you want to play the game? Then proceed."

Mattie’s hand clenched around the phone, her nails biting into her palm. She took a deep breath, trying to calm herself down. "Please," she said, her voice gentle, pleading. "Tell me what you know."

The voice’s tone turned mocking seeing how she finally mellowed, just what she wanted from her.

"Oh, Mattie, I know all about your little secret. You’re having a private wedding with Julian in two days, but the reason you’re marrying him isn’t even Julian. So, why are you trying to force this pregnancy on him?"

Mattie scoffed. "Because Julian belongs to me," she said, her voice firm. "I am not going to leave him for anyone, not even Astrid."

The voice’s response was like a slap in the face. "What if Julian knows that the child doesn’t belong to him?"

Mattie laughed out loud, a cold, mirthless sound. "Julian had his doubts, but he still accepted the pregnancy. That shouldn’t be a surprise to him at all."

Astrid’s fist clenched around the phone as she heard Mattie’s words. She was annoyed, but she couldn’t show it. Not yet.

"Mattie," Astrid said, her voice dripping with malice. "You think you are so clever, but you are not. You are just a pawn in a much bigger game."

Mattie’s laughter was like music to Astrid’s ears. "You can’t scare me," Mattie said, her voice confident.

"We will see about that," she said. "Is Mattie trying to get a powerful husband because she knows her mother isn’t her real mother?"

Mattie’s eyes widened in shock, and she burst out laughing, weirdly her heart began to rise continuously.

"You are crazy," she said, but Astrid could hear the doubt in her voice.

Astrid smirked. "Go do a DNA test to confirm what I am talking about," she said, and with that, she hung up the phone.

Mattie was left speechless, the words ringing in her head like a bell she stared at her phone.

She felt dizzy and quickly found her way to the bed, sitting down heavily. Her hands moved to her tummy, and she felt frustrated, and trapped.

Mattie’s guilt and shock overwhelmed her, and she let out a blood-curdling scream.

"No! No! No!" She kept muttering as she began throwing everything on her nightstand to the ground, including her night lamp.

The room plunged into darkness, and Mattie’s ragged breathing was the only sound.

"This can’t be happening.." she whispered to herself and the door burst open.

Tonia rushed inside, followed by Zach, who flipped the light switch, bathing the room in a warm glow. Tonia hurried to Mattie’s side, concern etched on her face.

"Mattie, what’s wrong?" Tonia asked, her voice soft and soothing.

Zach, on the other hand, looked annoyed, his eyes scanning the room with disgust, he was getting tired of her constant irritated behavior.

"What’s going on here?" he demanded.

Mattie tried to speak, but all that came out were sobs. She couldn’t catch her breath, and her body shook with uncontrollable tremors. Tonia wrapped her arms around Mattie, holding her close.

"Shh, Mattie, it’s okay," Tonia whispered, stroking Mattie’s hair. "You are safe. Just breathe... think about the baby"

Zach’s expression turned from annoyance to anger. "I am tired of this mother-daughter stress," he snapped. "The next time you destroy anything in my house, you will pay for it."

"Zach! Why are you being so cold to your daughter? You can see she is going through some kind of phase." Mattie let out in shock, she got that she still didn’t win his full heart but not expecting him to go back to his previous behavior after getting to know Astrid.

"I don’t care, if she can’t, if she can’t hold in her anger she should get out of my house!" He turned to leave, but not before muttering under his breath.

"I can’t wait for her to get married and get the heck out of my mansion. She’s too spoiled, and I regret ever letting you do your things for her."

Mattie’s eyes widened in shock, and for the first time, she felt a pang of fear. The words echoed in her mind,

"Your mother is not your real mother." She felt like her whole world was crumbling around her.

Tonia helped Mattie to the bed, gently guiding her to lie down. She pulled the covers over Mattie’s trembling body and sat beside her, stroking her hair.

"Shh, Mattie, it’s okay," Tonia repeated. "Just rest... I don’t want to bore you with the reason for your actions, so we will talk tomorrow when you are stable."

As Tonia’s soothing voice washed over her, Mattie’s sobs slowly subsided, replaced by ragged breathing. Tonia continued to stroke her hair, her touch calming Mattie’s frazzled nerves.

After a few minutes, Mattie’s eyelids grew heavy, and she felt herself drifting off to sleep. Tonia smiled, relief etched on her face.

"Sleep tight, Mattie," Tonia whispered, before leaning over to kiss Mattie’s forehead.

As Tonia stood up to leave, Mattie’s eyes flickered open, and she reached out, grasping Tonia’s hand.

"Thank you, Mum, I love " Mattie whispered, her voice barely audible.

Tonia smiled and squeezed Mattie’s hand. "I love you too my sweetheart." She placed a kiss on Mattie’s head.

"We will clean this up tomorrow,"

As Tonia walked out of the room, Mattie’s eyes locked onto the hair she had obtained from Tonia earlier.

Fear crept into her heart, and she knew she had to do the DNA test. She couldn’t stay in the dark anymore, she needed to prove that caller wrong, her mum loved her till the moon so she was sure she was her real mum.
