Chapter 126: THE TRUTH
Chapter 126: THE TRUTH
Astrid walked into her mother’s room, her heart heavy with worry. She was met with a sight that made her blood run cold.
Her mother was now connected to an oxygen tank, her chest rising and falling with each labored breath.
Astrid’s eyes welled up with tears as she remembered the conversation she had with her mother just a few minutes ago. She had seemed fine then, but now...
Astrid sat beside her mother, taking her hand in hers. She pondered the reason for her family’s past, wondering why her father had never lived with her mother.
She rested her head on her mother’s shoulder, trying to stem the flow of tears.
That’s when she noticed a slight movement from her mother. Her eyes fluttered open, and she smiled gently at Astrid.
"Mum," Astrid whispered, her voice trembling with emotion. She wrapped her arms tightly around her mother, holding her close.
"I am so sorry, Mum. I shouldn’t have left you, knowing how crazy he can be." she let out as she disengaged.
Elizabeth smiled weakly, her eyes filled with love and concern for her daughter, she pulled off the oxygen as Astrid was left in worry.
"Mum no," she whispered but Elizabeth shook her head.
"I am fine," she answered.
She gestured for Astrid to come closer, and Astrid pulled her into a tight hug. Tears streamed down Astrid’s face as she held her mother close.
Just then, the door burst open, and Becky rushed in, holding a sheaf of documents.
"Lizzy, I have finally talked to some doctors abroad, and they are ready to help. They think they can save you," Becky exclaimed, still staring at the documents in her hand.
When she finally looked up, her eyes met Astrid’s shocked gaze.
"Oh my... I didn’t..." Becky’s words trailed off as Julian touched her arm, gesturing for her to stop talking.
Astrid’s eyes narrowed, her mind racing with questions. "Mum, is there something wrong that I don’t know about?" she asked, her voice laced with concern.
Lizzy looked down, a sad expression on her face. Astrid’s curiosity was piqued.
"Mum, how come you are close with the Logans?" she asked, recalling the conversation she had with Becky earlier.
Elizabeth’s eyes snapped up, a mixture of surprise and fear flashing across her face. "What are you talking about, Astrid?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly.
Astrid’s eyes locked onto her mother’s, her mind racing with possibilities. What secrets was her mother hiding? And what did the Logans have to do with it?
" Mom, I didn’t talk about it because I don’t want to stress you out regarding this, but...." Her eyes darted between them.
"I can tell you all understand what I am talking about," Elizabeth sunk in her breath as she pulled Astrid closer to her.
"She’s my best friend, the one I had always talked about," Astrid stared at her for a while.
Her mum had always explained how she left her best friend without saying goodbye. She always told her how she regretted doing it and if she could turn back time she would listen to her then.
Astrid glanced at Becky, she had always termed her to be a very nice lady but not to the extent of already getting at her mum after what her mum had done.
"Wow, it’s nice to meet you.." Astrid left with a big smile, but Astrid kept getting that weird feeling.
If her mum knew her bestie was Becky why hadn’t her mum gone to her, she shouldn’t have gone back to being friends with her a long time ago why now?
"No wonder I have always had that loving spirit toward you the first time I set my eyes on you," Becky affirmed.
"We have also always promised to get our kids married to one another, guess the universe listened to our prayers," Astrid let out a small smile but that wasn’t changing her mind from what Becky had said the moment she walked in here.
"Mum, then what about traveling out?" The smile disappeared from their faces this time as they exchanged glances.
"Were you about to leave me again?" she asked further and she felt heartbroken at this.
"My sweet girl, it isn’t that way... I... I..."
"Something is wrong with you right?" Astrid interrupted her mum and Elizabeth shut her mouth at this.
"I knew it," she cried out.
"My sweet girl, I promise I didn’t want to bother you anymore," Astrid looked to the other side.
"Have I ever complained to you that I didn’t want you anymore, that I am tired of taking care of you?" Astrid cried out this time and Becky felt like it was the time they should give them a bit of space.
She gestured for her son and husband to leave, now leaving the mother and daughter alone.
My sweet girl, you are not but I am.." Astrid glanced at her mum, with shock.
"I am tired of living in this painful world, seeing my daughter worry about her sick mum when she should be taking care of herself,"
"Mum, I am fine," Astrid argued.
"I am exhausted with the way you have spent every of your life savings to help,"
"You even agreed to get married to the one the bastard arranged for you, what if you never entered the wrong hall?" Astrid sighed seeing someone had told her mum how it all transpired.
"Mum, careful you...." Elizabeth shook her head, "My sweet girl... You need to live your life now and stop getting worried about me," Astrid shook her head.
"Mum... no... I won’t, I can’t live without you. If you are going to travel out to get well then I am going to be in support of it," she grabbed her mum’s hands as she caressed it.
"I don’t want to lose you," she whispered and Elizabeth could only smile painfully.
Her mind flashed back to what had caused her attack a few minutes ago as her husband’s words sank into her head.
"I hated that little beast you brought to the world, have you forgotten how we met?" Josh spat angrily and more tears flowed freely from Elizabeth.
"Remember, we are only together to get her to have a father? I never loved you, would never,"
"Josh, she answers your last name, please you can’t do it, don’t tell her she would be heartbroken for life, I don’t have much time to spend with her anymore," she pleaded.
"I don’t care, she is a thorn in my neck, it’s better discarding shit pieces now than."
"Josh!" she screamed in pain, "If you never wanted her you bastard should have allowed me to be with my daughter from the beginning." She cried
Josh burst out laughing at this, "You refused to give me the blueprint I yearn for so much, why would it be possible to just let her go?"
"Josh, you bastard!" Elizabeth spat, her eyes blazing with anger. Josh scoffed, his face twisted in a cruel smile as he bent down beside her.
"Hand me the blueprint that made me keep you alive for months," he sneered.
Elizabeth swallowed hard, "Never," she whispered, her voice trembling. "I destroyed it already."
Josh’s face turned red with rage, and he lunged at Elizabeth, his hands grasping for her. But just as he was about to grab her, Elizabeth’s breath caught in her throat, and she clutched at her chest.
Her eyes fluttered closed, and she gasped in pain recalling that moment again.
Her hands instinctively went to comfort her crying daughter. Astrid’s tears streamed down her face as she clung to her mother, her small body shaking with sobs.
"My sweet girl," Elizabeth whispered, her voice weak but determined. "I will fight till the end to make sure you go back to your real father. I can no longer let you be with the Daniels anymore." she thought.
