Chapter 127: THE TRUTH 2

Chapter 127: THE TRUTH 2

Mattie paced back and forth in the dimly lit room, her anxiety growing with each passing minute.

It was late at night, and no one had returned from the hospital. She had a bad feeling about this, and she needed to get to the bottom of it quickly.

Just as she was starting to lose hope, her phone rang, shrill in the silence. She snatched it up, her heart racing.

"Hello, Mum," she cried out, her voice trembling.

Tonia was immediately alert to Mattie’s distress in her voice. "What’s wrong, my dear? I told you not to go to him, but you refused. Are you..."

Mattie cut her off, her words tumbling out in a rush. "Your sister is back!" she exclaimed, her voice barely above a whisper.

Tonia’s tone changed from concern to shock. "What? How did you know? You don’t even know her."

Mattie’s eyes darted around the room as if searching for an escape.

"Stephen called, he overheard Aunt Becky and Astrid’s mom talking. They were best friends, and also heard that you are her little sister."

Tonia’s reaction was immediate. She jumped up from her chair, her eyes wide with shock.

Zach, who was sitting nearby, looked up from the papers he was reading, a questioning expression on his face. "Is everything okay?" he asked, his voice low and concerned.

Tonia shook her head, her eyes still fixed on some point in the distance. She ran up the stairs, shutting her bedroom door behind her.

Tonia’s voice was laced with fear as she asked, "How sure are you, Mattie?"

Mattie’s response was immediate. "I am positive, mum. We need to be careful. What if grandfather finds out?" Mattie’s voice trembled at the thought.

Mattie’s anxiety spiked. "What if he does? What will happen?" she added almost in tears.

"He can’t find out, Mattie. We will do everything in our power to keep it a secret." Tonia’s voice was firm. l as she assured Mattie.

"Where are you now?" Tonia asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

"I am at home," she replied almost immediately. "But I am getting worried, mum. They’ve been at the hospital for hours. What if the news is worse than we thought?"

Tonia’s heart sank at the thought. She had been trying not to think about the worst-case scenario, but now it seemed all too possible.

"You don’t have to be worried, daughter, I am going to take care of this." She reassured her daughter.

Even though her mum assured her she was not convinced but decided not to bother her.

"Alright mum," she answered and then they hung up, just then his call came in.

"Stephan, what is going on there, why are they still in the hospital?"

"Nothing, just some issues..." but she interrupted him.

"How about you doing what I asked? Why are you so useless?" she shrieked in frustration.

"Mattie, be calm... they are in the room most times. Do you expect me to just go in there, your request is outrageous, you can come to do so yourself if you think I don’t do anything."Stephan let out and hung up.

"Who are you talking to?" Stephan gr startled and glanced at the door to see Julian standing there with his hand in his pocket.

"Someone you didn’t know," he answered, hoping Julian didn’t hear his conversation.

Julian nodded his head strolling toward his desk as he sat, "Aren’t you going home today?" Julian looked up and shook his head.

"I don’t know, I can’t just tell her to leave her mum, I had barely just managed to convince mum to leave home and come back tomorrow," he explained.

"You look exhausted yourself, maybe you can just go and come tomorrow," Julian glared at him.

"I can’t leave her here,"

"So you like her," Julian breathes deeply, "What the heck is your problem with who I want or like?"

"I don’t like her, and Mattie is someone I consider sister, so tell me who I should fight for," Julian nodded his head in understanding.

"You have a point for that though," he let out and he just shook his head.

"You can take this to calm your nerves, I can’t help but worry about how many meetings you have scheduled for her," he said, stretching a chilled glass cup of juice.

Julian scowled at his friend even though he sounded offensive. It was the truth but he isn’t mad about it.

He collected the glass from his friend now sipping his juice, "You do remember that Mattie is the only one at home right?"

Julian shut his eyes irritated at his friend’s constant reminder, "Stephan.." he grumbled and snorted.

"You don’t have anything to do with her anymore all you care about now is Astrid,"

"Let that go, mother fucker!" Julian slammed his glass on the table, storming out of his office.

"Hey, man, you don’t have to be mad at it... you..." Stephen started to say, but his words trailed off as he saw Tonia walking past them.

"Aunty, you’re here. Why?" Julian asked, but before he could finish, Tonia walked past him, storming into Elizabeth’s room.

Julian and Stephen exchanged a glance before rushing after her. They entered the room to find Tonia embracing Elizabeth, tears streaming down her face.

"You bitch! You know how many years I waited for your return?" Tonia exclaimed, her voice shaking.

Astrid stared at them, confused. Elizabeth smiled weakly, "Never expected you to welcome me this way if you saw me again."

Tonia disengaged from the embrace and began to hit Elizabeth. "Mum," Astrid cried out, trying to intervene, but Julian pulled her away.

"Let me go! She’s hurting my mom!" Astrid cried out but only calmed down when she saw the calm smirk on her mother’s face.

Tonia continued to vent her anger. "You know how long I waited? Father fell sick because of you! Mum is also dead because of you!" she cried out, her words piercing the air.

Astrid tried to process the complex emotions and relationships unfolding before her. "Mum, who is she to you?" she finally asked, her voice laced with confusion.

Elizabeth smiled weakly, gesturing to Tonia. "Astrid, meet your aunt, my sister."

Astrid’s eyes widened in shock. "What? Are you telling me that you’re...?"

Astrid’s words trailed off as she struggled to comprehend the revelation.

"So, Mattie is my cousin?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Tonia’s expression was a mix of anger and resignation, but she forced a smile. "Oh my... yes... definitely, she is your cousin."

Astrid scoffed as she gestured for Julian to let her go "Wow, Mum... you did hide a lot, and it’s about to cause more trouble for me." Elizabeth’s expression was apologetic. "Astrid, I..."

"Mum, I think your sister is here, she should probably take care of you tonight, I need to get my senses back."

"Astrid," she called again but Astrid never turned back and just walked out.

"Ma’am... she is just in shock at the news, she will be back tomorrow, have a nice rest." Julian bowed and she smiled.

A painful smile, and Julian walked out, Stephan also stepped out after bowing, and then Tonia stood from the bed now having an irritation in her look.

"How dare you come back after many years of you promising never to show your face," Tonia’s voice echoed through the room.
