Chapter 115: HE CAN NEVER LOVE YOU
"Julian, see she has no right to tell you what to do," Mattie said, tugging on Julian’s arm.
Then Tonia intervened, her expression stern. "I still disapprove of you being with my daughter, but I have no choice but to let her live with you since that’s what she wants."
Tonia stepped closer to Julian, her voice low and warning. "If you ever make her regret this decision, I will make you pay."
Julian sighed and nodded. "I hope she regains her memory soon." he let out, already frustrated, as his gaze lingered in the direction Astrid had walked off.
"You can go home with Mattie. I will stay here with Astrid," Miles moved forward patting Julian’s back as he said it.
Julian’s eyes flashed with annoyance, but he nodded. "Fine. Make sure she’s alright."
Miles, who had been watching, nodded and left, finding his way to where both ladies had gone.
Miles approached Astrid and Maren, who sat outside the scan room, looking anxious.
"Hey, good evening," Miles leg out a bit anxious seeing Maren.
Astrid met his gaze for a moment before looking away. Maren refused to acknowledge him, still hurt from their past. She had planned to cut him off and have nothing to do with him anymore but fate is sure of her karma.
Astrid sighed, her eyes fixed on the door. "They should be done soon."
Miles broke the silence. "Astrid, you’re going to be okay. Don’t worry."
Astrid’s expression remained tense, while Maren’s eyes remained fixed on the floor, avoiding Miles.
Astrid paced anxiously, her feet carrying her back and forth across the hospital floor. She finally returned to the bench, her eyes clouded with worry.
"I am scared," Astrid confessed, her voice barely above a whisper. "I feel like there’s more to that scan. Mum didn’t want me to worry, but she kept mentioning death." Her voice cracked.
Maren placed a reassuring hand on Astrid’s shoulder. "You shouldn’t say crazy things, she will be okay," Maren said firmly, trying to calm Astrid’s fears.
Astrid’s eyes welled up with tears. "I am terrified of losing her this time around Maren, I don’t think I can take it." Her voice trembled.
Maren’s expression softened. She wants to understand the depth of Astrid’s pain, the story behind her desperation to keep her mother alive.
She could only embrace and comfort her by saying soothing words, so as not to get her worried. This time she is calm but still looking dead while Miles only stands there speechless.
Just then, a familiar voice interrupted them, "Miss Maren," a voice called out.
Astrid and Maren turned to face the speaker "Good day, Doctor," Maren replied, her eyes widening in surprise.
It was the same doctor who had helped Maren with her abortion.
"I am doing well, thank you," Maren said quickly, glancing around nervously.
The doctor’s gaze lingered on her, concern etched on her face. "You’re not stressing yourself, are you?" she asked.
Maren shook her head, still looking worried, since Miles was standing beside them.
Astrid then intervened, her voice filled with reassurance. "Promise the doctor she’s doing fine," Astrid said, forcing a smile.
The doctor smiled back. "I need you to be extra careful for future purposes," the doctor added.
They both nodded in understanding, and the doctor left, they both sighed out in relief leaving the confused Miles curious.
Miles is left wondering the reason why she was in the hospital in the first place, "Were you sick?" he asked and she looked up at him, not a nice one but one with an angry glare.
"Yeah, do you have any problem with that?" Miles flickered, his eyes stunned at this.
"I... just care ."
"Well, you don’t need to be, thanks," she replied sassily.
Miles was about to reponse when the door opened and the doctor walked out only for them to jump up from their seat almost immediately.
"Oh my doctor! How is she? She is going to be good right!" Astrid asked all at once.
The doctor sighed staring at them, "Well... we are in the process and still haven’t gotten any effective response but I think it’s better you both leave for now."
Astrid’s voice trembled as she moved closer to the doctor "Leave? I can’t leave. I don’t have the heart to leave my mom here alone, especially after just getting her back."
Dr. Lee grasped Astrid’s shoulders gently. "Mrs. Logan, I think that’s what’s best for you. You will only worry more if you stay."
Astrid shook her head uncertainty on her face. "I promise I will send you every detail of the test results," Dr. Lee added.
"No, I will stay with her." she refused immediately,
Dr. Lee glanced at Miles and Maren, seeking their assistance.
The. Miles stepped forward, his tone softening. "Astrid, don’t worry. Your mom will be fine. You need rest, too. It’s better to leave now and come back tomorrow."
Astrid opened her mouth to protest, but Miles’ gentle smile stopped her.
"Please, Astrid, your mom wouldn’t want to see you sick," he coaxed.
Astrid sighed, defeated. "Fine, I will leave, but only because I don’t want Mom to worry. I will call you every hour to check on her."
Dr Lee nodded in agreement, and they immediately hosed her out As Astrid departed with Miles and Maren, worry still clouded her face.
Dr. Lee watched them leave, then snapped his fingers. Nurses swiftly wheeled Elizabeth out of the room and into her own.
The hospital corridor emptied, leaving only the sound of softly beeping machines.
"The nurses and Dr Lee helped her settle," Elezabeth stretched his hands forward for Dr Lee, to come forward.
Elizabeth’s voice barely above a whisper, "Thank you, Doctor I am really grateful for your help," Dr Lee smiled a bit at this but still worried.
Are you sure Mrs. Logan doesn’t need to know about this? We..." he asked her.
Elizabeth shook her head immediately. "I want to spend my last moments with Astrid filled with smiles, not tears. Please, no more hurting her," Elizabeth pleaded.
Dr. Lee sighed, understanding in his eyes.
"Regarding the DNR form, I think it’s time I signed it. I don’t want any prolonged help if I become unconscious," Elizabeth announced.
"Ma’am," Dr. Lee began.
Elizabeth’s voice remained firm. "It’s time Astrid lived her life without me holding her back."
"Yeah, but without informing her she might get mad,"
"Please, she has been doing this for months, now that I see she has strong people behind her it’s time for her to shine."
Dr. Lee nodded solemnly now, understanding her.
"I will never forget your kindness, Doctor," Elizabeth said.
Her voice cracked as Dr. Lee offered a reassuring smile.
Meanwhile, Astrid, Miles, and Maren enter the living room as they get home.
Astrid noticed Maren sitting snugly on Julian tight as he fed her.
Irritation flashed across Astrid’s face, but she try to hide it now trying to go inside her room.
Maren grasped Astrid’s arm, pulling her back. "He might still love her, but you are his wife," Maren whispered.
Astrid’s eyes narrowed at this as Maren guided Astrid to the dining room not listening to her.
"Maren, you shouldn’t stress yourself, you’re not strong yet," Astrid said, but Marem was determined to get to them.
Miles trailed behind, puzzled by Maren’s behavior and her coldness toward him.
As they entered the dining room, the tension lingered.
Astrid’s emotions churned as Julian’s affection for Mattie stung, she can never make him like her like Mattie.
"Good evening Mattie don’t you think this is disrespectful?" Maren let out as Astrid eyes winded as she pulled Maren’s hand but she refused to let it go.
"Excuse me? Disrespectful, sitting on my fiancé’s leg?" she retorted and Julian’s eyes narrowed as he tried to help Mattie into a chair, but Mattie refused.
"I heard she’s just a sly homewrecker who came into my home, stealing the man I am supposed to marry," Mattie snarled.
Maren smiled sweetly. "I get it. You can continue having your way with...the one who will never love you."
This got Mattie’s face twisted in rage. "You bitch!" She grabbed Maren’s hair, yanking her close.
"You are just jealous, your friend can’t have him" Maren whispered, her eyes flashing.
"Really?"
Mattie’s anger boiled over. She kicked Maren in the abdomen, sending her crashing to the floor.
"Maren!" Astrid screamed, rushing to her side. "What’s wrong? Are you okay?" she asked worriedly.
Maren clutched Astrid’s hands, her face contorted in pain.
"I...I..." Maren struggled to speak, her voice barely audible.
Miles’s face darkened. "What the hell did you do to her?" he shouted at Mattie.
Mattie’s eyes widened, fear creeping in. "I...I didn’t mean to..."
Miles helped Maren sit up, concern etched on his face. "You are bleeding," he said.
Astrid’s eyes locked onto Maren’s, an alarm written across her face.
"Someone explain what’s happening!" Miles demanded.
Astrid’s voice trembled. "She just had an abortion and needs rest. I think she would need the hospital,"
Miles’s face paled, horror dawning on her. "What?" They all yelled as they stared in shock.
