Chapter 114: DO AS YOU PLEASE
Chapter 114: DO AS YOU PLEASE
Astrid carefully spooned a bite of warm vegetable soup into her mother’s mouth.
Elizabeth savored the flavors, her eyes locked on her daughter smiling warmly at her.
"More?" Astrid asked, grinning from ear to ear.
Elizabeth nodded, and Astrid fed her another spoonful. Astrid so badly wants to share a conversation with her mum and she smiles as she recalls something.
"Mum, do you remember designing our dream house?" Astrid asked, trying to stimulate conversation, and at the same time she tried to imagine just her and her mum living in their dream house with no sort of disturbance from the outside world.
Elizabeth’s gaze drifted, memories flickering across her face, even though it was a few years she spent with her daughter she had always done what she loved in her presence.
She loved her daughter more than her life, she had fought and made Josh manipulate her just for her to get the rights of her daughter but it was to no avail.
No one knows her for her architectural skills, Josh has always been the one to shine. He is the one with power so she couldn’t get her daughter, she was like a nobody.
"The curved lines... the skylights... You loved the atrium."Astrid sang as Elizabeth chuckled.
"Yes!" she whispered, "And you would explain how the natural light would brighten the space?" Elizabeth nodded her head, and then it sadly disappeared.
"But, I couldn’t teach you more about it, and teach that unworthy bastard," Elizabeth said sadly. It was her greatest mistake in life, forgetting to build herself because she loved her ex-husband.
She built him and handed him the company which she had inherited from her parents before their death. She thought he was the best man alive and placed her whole trust in him but he is a monster.
Astrid wasn’t in the mood to be sad, "Mum... I still learned some skills from you, you are here, and you will teach me more,"
Elizabeth nodded her head sadly. "Of course my sweet girl, you would continue my legacy right?"
Astrid nodded her head as she packed the remaining vegetable soup since her mum was done.
"Your husband would be a great help in your life," Astrid halted her actions for a few seconds before proceeding.
"Besides, where is he?" she asked and Astrid smiled, "He had an urgent meeting so he went there." she lied she knew this was wrong but she didn’t want her mum to like him also.
Just then, the door flung open and Maren entered with a basket of fresh fruits.
"Hello, everyone!" Maren announced, setting the basket beside Astrid and embracing her tightly.
"I... didn’t know your mum.." She whispered still in shock, when they disengaged she stared at Elizabeth, "Good evening ma’am." she whispered.
"You are not that strong why stress yourself coming here Maren," Astrid asked recalling she wasn’t feeling well.
"Common, why shouldn’t I be here for you, I am mad you decided to hide this from me," Maren let out with a pouty lip.
"I am sorry, I didn’t want to stress you." Astrid let out truthfully and she smiled back.
"That is what friends are for." she let out.
Elizabeth’s eyes locked onto Maren, her gaze filled with a mix of surprise and curiosity. She turned back to Astrid, her expression unreadable.
She can’t help but ponder on how Maren is embracing her daughter casually.
"How?" Elizabeth asked, her voice laced with curiosity.
"Mum, she’s my friend and also my coach for now," Astrid replied with a warm smile, trying to ease her mother’s concerns.
"It’s nice meeting her, Mum," Astrid continued, her eyes sparkling with affection.
Elizabeth nodded, her eyes now held adoration. "It’s awesome to see someone love my daughter like you do," Elizabeth said, her voice filled with gratitude, her eyes misting.
Maren’s cheeks flushed as she smiled, touched by Elizabeth’s words.
"Thanks, Mum," she let out, and then her eyes locked on the basket she brought with her.
"Thought she might enjoy some fresh fruit," Maren said, gesturing to the basket.
Astrid smiled, selecting a sliced strawberry. "Try this, Mum."
Elizabeth’s eyes lit up as Astrid fed her the strawberry. "Mmm... sweet," Elizabeth whispered, her face relaxing into a smile.
"Thanks a lot, Maren," Elizabeth said, her voice filled with sincerity. "At least my heart is safe knowing you’re backing Astrid."
Astrid’s eyes widened, concern etched on her face. "Mum, you didn’t have to be worried about death or anything,"
Astrid said, her voice trembling. "I promise you’re going to be okay, stop scaring me with your words."
Elizabeth snorted a hint of playfulness in her eyes.
Maren then sat beside Astrid, "I am glad you’re doing better, Mum," Astrid said, her voice filled with emotion. Elizabeth squeezed Astrid’s hand.
"I am glad too, sweetie," Elizabeth replied.
Maren smiled, her eyes shining with warmth. It was the first time she was used to mother and daughter having this beautiful moment.
"We’re in this together," Maren said.
The scene is filled with laughter and love, and they exchange more conversation and Elizabeth gets to know Marem more.
The door opened and then Dr Lee appeared from behind it "Hope I am not distracting anything?"
"Of course not Dr. Lee you can come in, they both let out and he walks inside now staring at Maren.
"Miss Maren didn’t expect you to be here," Maren shook her head, "Well a friend of mine so I need to come greet her."
"Awwn that’s nice at least I get to see you person, not everyone has that chance," Maren smiled at him and then he glanced at Elizabeth.
"Remember we are supposed to do some scans, I think it’s time now." He announced his reason being her and a smile on Astrid’s face disappeared at the mention of scan and then Maren grasped her hands.
"It’s going to be fine," she mouths, "So doctor eh.."
"We will take her out of the room," he explained. "All you have to do is wait for the results, and I promise we will get a good outcome."
Astrid nodded, trying to appear calm, and turned to her mother. "Mum, we’re going to be fine, okay? Just have your scan and be strong for me."
Elizabeth’s frail hand caressed Astrid’s face, sensing her trembling. "You don’t have to be scared, sweetie. I will be alright."
Astrid embraced her mother tightly, holding back tears until the nurses arrived, "I love you." she let out and then she responded to her daughter placing a small kiss on her cheek.
"I love you too my sweet girl," with this the nurse came in and wheels Elizabeth out of the room.
Maren enveloped Astrid in a warm hug. "You’ve been strong this whole time. Just hold on a little longer."
"I am trying," Astrid whispered, her voice cracking, "But scared. What if the cancer comes back?"
Maren’s expression turned concerned. "Cancer?" she asked, surprised.
Astrid nodded, her eyes welling up.
"Don’t worry, Julian will do everything to make her okay," Maren reassured.
The mention of Julian’s name made Astrid uneasy, but she pushed aside her doubts.
"I will place my hope on that, Maren," Astrid said, trying to sound convinced.
Pacing around the room, Astrid suddenly felt an overwhelming urge to be close to her mother.
"Let’s go there. I am scared. I don’t want to be far from her."
Maren nodded without an argument and grasped Astrid’s hands. "I will be here for you."
As they stepped out into the hallway, they met with the family, Astrid wasn’t planning to see them again, not today.
Astrid’s heart sank, and Maren sensed her tension and squeezed her hand reassuringly.
But what hurt her was Julian also being with them, the one behind the wheel.
They all exchange glances for a while before Astrid decides to greet the parent, "Good evening," she lets out, obviously mad.
"Why are you here?" Tonia barked out and Miles stared at his mum stunned.
"She is here for her reason you didn’t have to be mad at her mum," Miles fought back and Astrid’s eyes met with that of Julian.
"Maren!" Mattie called out, feigning her loss of memory as she wheeled closer.
Maren stared at her warily, not responding. "It’s nice to see you again," Mattie continued, her tone stern.
Astrid then whispered to Maren, "She lost her memory."
Maren’s eyebrows shot up in shock. "Oh, it’s nice to see you too," Maren replied coldly, refusing to pretend.
Mattie smirked, noticing the tension.
"If you will excuse us, we need to leave," Maren whispered, turning to leave. But Julian grasped Astrid’s hand, halting her.
"Astrid," he called, his voice low.
Astrid glared at him, her eyes flashing with anger.
"She will be living with us now," Julian announced. " She’s regained her memory."
The room fell silent, all eyes on Astrid.
Astrid’s gaze swept the room, a small chuckle escaping her lips.
"Of course, it’s your house, you can have anyone you want in it without telling me," Astrid said, her voice dripping with sarcasm.
She turned to Julian, her eyes blazing in anger, "Julian, you love Mattie so much, and she’s supposed to be your wife. You have every right to do as you please."
With that, Astrid grasped Maren’s hand, and together they walked away, leaving the stunned group behind.
