Chapter 106: MAREN’s ANGER
Chapter 106: MAREN’s ANGER
Maren’s eyelids fluttered open, revealing a haze of confusion. She expected Astrid’s concerned face to greet her, but instead, her assistant, Hannette, sat beside her.
"Oh, thank goodness you’re finally awake!" Hannette exclaimed, relief washing over her features. "What were you thinking? You know how worried everyone is?"
Maren’s voice cracked as she spoke. "Everyone?"
Hannette nodded vigorously. "Yes, everyone! I mean, Ma’am Astrid and I. We’ve been frantic with worry."
Maren’s gaze lingered on Hannette before shifting to the hospital room surroundings.
"At least give me some water," Maren requested, her voice laced with desperation.
Hannette sighed, stretching out a bottle of water. "Don’t do that again, okay?"
Maren forced herself to sit up, wincing at the lingering pain. She gulped down the water, savoring the refreshing liquid.
Only after satisfying her thirst did Maren respond to Hannette. "Has Astrid gone home?"
Hannette shrugged. "I don’t know, she texted me using your phone, saying she wouldn’t be able to stay here with you, something urgent came up, and asked me to check up on you."
Maren nodded, understanding.
"Yeah, she’s big on keeping promises," Maren said with a faint smile on her lips.
"What’s the time?" Maren asked.
The attending doctor entered the room. "It’s the next morning, and you are doing great now," she said with a warm smile.
Maren’s gaze snapped to the IV drip in her arm. "Then I need to get to the office. I have an important meeting today."
She attempted to pull out the drip, but the doctor swiftly intervened.
"Whoa, hold on! You’re not going anywhere just yet," She said firmly.
Maren’s gaze faltered as her doctor’s words sank in. "But I have responsibilities," Maren protested, her voice laced with desperation.
This also softened the doctor’s expression. "I understand, but your health comes first. You need rest and recovery time."
Hannette, Maren’s assistant, chimed in. "Ma’am, you need to be careful. You almost lost your life due to the drugs. Now, you need complete bed rest for at least a week. You can’t just go off to meetings."
Maren’s determination began to waver, but she refused to give in. "I am going to bed rest at my house, I don’t want anyone to know about my absence. Please, just let me go."
She pulled out the IV drip, ignoring Hannette’s concerned cry. "Boss, wait!"
"Get me my dress," Maran instructed Hannette standing from the bed not listening to her doctor.
Just as Maren began dressing, the door burst open, and Astrid strode in, looking rough and exhausted.
"Hey, Maren, where are you going?" Astrid asked worriedly.
Maren’s gaze met Astrid’s, her expression stern. "I am sorry I wasn’t here with you, I just..." Astrid’s words trailed off as she took in Maren’s hastily dressed state.
Hannette, Maren’s assistant, rushed in with a new dress. "Here, Ma’am."
And the doctor sighed. "Ma’am Astrid, good morning. I need to advise you about that boss......"
Astrid interrupted her voice firm. "Maren, you are not going anywhere. You need to rest."
Maren’s eyes flashed with resolution. "I have a meeting, Astrid. I must..."
Astrid’s expression turned stern. "If you continue being persistent, I won’t hesitate to call him and tell him everything."
Maren’s resolve crumbled, and she sat back in bed, a hint of pettiness on her face.
Astrid’s gaze never wavered. "You can tell your assistant to handle it all."
Maren glanced at Hannette, who wore a victorious smile.
"Fine," Maren relented. "Reschedule the meeting and inform our client I was admitted to the hospital."
Hannette nodded efficiently. "Right away, Ma’am."
Then the doctor nodded in approval. "We will ensure your recovery, Maren."
Astrid’s expression softened. "I will stay with you, make sure you’re okay."
Maren’s gaze met Astrid’s, a mix of gratitude and frustration swirling within.
The doctor also helped her aced back her drip before leaving the two lads, Astrid on the other hand helped Maren to be sure she was comfortable.
Just then the door pushed open and it was none other than Miles.
"Miles?" Maren called, staring at Astrid who quietly shook her head.
"Maren? Why are you in the hospital?" he asked a bit worried as he strutted toward where she stood.
"That is none of your business, how did you even get into my room" Maren asked and Miles was left speechless.
"But?"
"Butt out of my life and get lost. I don’t want anything to do with you again. Is it that hard to listen?" Maren’s voice was laced with venom.
Miles’s expression faltered, taken aback by Maren’s harsh tone. She had never spoken to him like that before.
For a weird reason, Miles wasn’t happy with this.
"We are friends, can I get..." Miles started.
But Maren cut him off. "Leave, please. I am getting irritated just seeing you."
Miles’s gaze shifted to Astrid, who promptly avoided eye contact.
"Hold on? Did I do something bad? Why are you suddenly acting cold and..." Miles trailed off.
Maren’s anger boiled over. "Miles, you begged me to let you go and stop pursuing you. I am doing that now, so get out and don’t bother me again. Don’t ask any more fcking questions."
Miles’s face contorted in shock.
"Ma..."
"Get out!" Maren’s yell echoed through the room.
Miles breathed deeply, his eyes locking onto Astrid confused, "Alright, guess we will talk some other days," he let out before walking out.
As the door closed, Maren burst into tears. Astrid rushed to her side.
"Oh my," Astrid whispered, cradling Maren’s head on her shoulder. "I am here for you. You can cry on my shoulder. I won’t judge you."
Maren’s tears flowed freely as Astrid held her close.
Astrid understood the depth of Maren’s pain. They had both endured similar pains.
After a while, Maren pulled back from the embrace.
Astrid handed her a tissue. "Here, take your time."
Maren wiped her tears and pulled out her phone.
"What are you doing?" Astrid asked.
Maren’s eyes narrowed. "Blocking his number. I need space."
Astrid nodded in support. "You deserve it." Maren’s fingers flew across the screen, "I am done with him," Maren declared.
Astrid smiled softly. "You’re strong, Maren. You will get through this."
Maren’s gaze met Astrid’s, gratitude shining in her eyes.
"I also need to tell the doctor not to tell him." she let out again texting her doctor already.
When she was done she stared at Astrid, "The two people you should never mess with are Julian and Miles they will go to extra lengths to find out what exactly happened, if they get a hint of this."
I rather die with the truth than to allow them know what is going on with me.
