Chapter 350: Revealing Secrets
"Come again?" Elaina felt like she was hearing wrong and thought that what Adelaide was saying did not register completely in her mind.
"I said I am a reincarnator. Someone who lived in the past, died, and has been reborn to a new individual...but I retained my memories of the past life. That’s me," Adelaide explained.
"Wait, wait, wait. Are you saying that my daughter remembers her past life and you are born once again?"
"Yes. You might say that I am older than you, Mom. However, I don’t care about ages right now because you are still my mother and that doesn’t change a thing."
"But...why are you telling me this?" Elaina asked. She still can’t believe that her daughter has a hidden past like that.
"It’s about your son and my twin."
"Wait, wait...don’t tell me he is also a reincarnator?!" Elaina tried to guess first.
Adelaide chuckled. "Hahaha, if Arthur was actually a reincarnator, both of us would be speaking more fluently than before. Though, I can’t say Arthur is normal. My sibling is quite talented to the point that I have to reveal my identity as a reincarnator just so I can give you context on how he is this talented."
Elaina at first was a bit bewildered by the revelation. But she is open-minded on various things and since it is her daughter she is currently speaking with, she decided to believe her. And it seems that she does have a more adult demeanor than she thought she would be. She is still the same daughter she knows...but is more mature and her behavior is something that she would only be seeing once Adelaide has grown up to be a teenager. But seeing it while she is still barely 2 years old? That is something else.
"I know it is hard to believe Mother, but I hope you understand. And no, if you think I will be leaving because I remembered my past life, don’t worry about it. My past life is so distant in the past that I should start anew and enjoy my new life instead of clinging to what happened in the past. Treat me like your daughter as you always have."
"Well, can you blame me? Revealing yourself to accurately remember your past is something that I only read in the records, but to hear it from you directly, is something I wouldn’t expect to know."
"I agree. But Mom, aren’t you curious about my past? About who I am and what are my deeds?"
Elaina shook her head. "You might be someone of great stature back then, but I don’t really care if you don’t share it with me or not. It doesn’t change the fact that you are still my daughter. Of course, if you want me to call you by your old name, I can also-"
"N-no. Don’t do that. I would rather have my new name now than my old name. I like my new name now, compared to before. Ahem...so anyways, I revealed my status as a reincarnator to reveal the peculiarities of my twin sibling."
"You said he isn’t a reincarnator but he is peculiar?" Elaina frowned.
"Yes. Although it would look like he is peculiar to other people who do not understand him, I hope that you won’t treat him like a weirdo. He has great talents that I recognize back in my past life. I don’t know if people still recognize the talents my brother has but in case these talents have faded over time, I would like to explain things right now."
True. There are indeed various things that have been forgotten over time. Dozens or even thousands of things have become forgotten relics of the past and most records that one can find those things are from things like old books that existed during those times, detailing those old stuff that are forgotten. So, if those old things manifest again in the new world, it would just end up like they have discovered something new when it was actually just a forgotten thing that has been rediscovered.
"Alright, let’s hear it. I hope that it wasn’t too weird that would drastically change his life like becoming a hero or something. I still wanted him to grow a normal life just like a normal kid."
"It’s nothing major that would change his life, Mom. But would be very helpful in the future especially if my brother wanted to become a businessman or something. As you can see, Arthur can Auto-Translate."
"Auto-translate? You mean transcribing a language and converting it to a language that everyone can understand?"
Adelaide nodded. "Yes. He has this built in his mind right now. All language that he hears will be automatically translated into his mind, allowing him to understand what he is talking about. I don’t understand what the mermaid was saying because she speaks a language I am not able to understand but for Arthur, he understands her completely and was able to understand a few of her words. But since the ability is still currently only possible in one way at the moment, only Arthur can understand her and the mermaid will remain oblivious. I didn’t know he had this talent but I decided to test him by speaking a language I know in my past life and confirmed that it was indeed a case."
"Wait, you said "for now", does that mean it can improve?"
"Yes. If the person with this talent becomes more adept, he or she can use this to also converse with that person using his own language but once he speaks, the language of the person he is currently speaking with will be applied, allowing the two to speak naturally to one another. See what I mean?"
Elaina nodded in agreement. She has encountered people who don’t understand their language especially those who have a different race, which results in problems and a need for a translator just so one can understand one another. If Arthur develops that in the future, he will have no problem talking with others even if he didn’t learn the language himself. He can use his talent and speak with others easily. It might not be related to combat skills, but a talent like this can stop wars. Good communication can also lead to good and friendly talk without misunderstanding one another. And for Arthur to have that, no wonder even Adelaide decided to talk about her secret so that she could easily discuss this matter with her.
"Ade, are you going to tell the others about this secret of yours? Or is it just me for now?" Elaina asked.
"Can we keep it between us for now, Mom?" Adelaide pleaded and then Elaina responded with a smile.
"That’s good to know. It’s best to keep your identity a secret for now, even with Julia, the Witch herself, or the others. Maybe you can tell your brother, but I guess he is still too young to understand. Anyways, the less people know that you remember your past life, the better it is."
Elaina then hugged Adelaide. "Just tell me if you have any problems alright? Even if you have revealed yourself as someone who should be technically older than me, doesn’t change the fact that you are still my daughter. So don’t worry and rely on your mother more if you need it."
The words from Elaina’s mouth are something that Adelaide has not heard in her entire life, not even in her past life. For someone who grew up in a household that does not care for their children, she is blessed to be born to a caring mother. And even when she revealed her true nature, she didn’t flinch or even doubt her. Instead, she remained the same and didn’t think of her as some weird child.
And so, that day, even though she is still a small child, she will dedicate her current life to her mother and make sure she will remain happy and safe.
...
...
...
Elaina and Adelaide continued to talk for a while, discussing what Arthur understood from the mermaid’s words. This allowed Elaina to gain an understanding of the situation and piece a few clues on why the mermaid was wounded before and why she was left to die on the ocean. In short, the mermaid would not be safe even if she were returned to the ocean. If her parents were actually killed by someone and she witnessed it before she fled, that must mean that the survival of her parents is slim.
So the only logical way for the mermaid is to remain here and adapt to human life. However, the mermaid is a different species than a human, one, she has a tail, and two, that tail cannot be converted into legs in any way shape, or form which will result in the third problem which is the limited areas she can remain.
"Mom, are you going to adopt her?" Adelaide asked.
"Actually, I don’t like the sound of adopting her. We still didn’t know if her parents survived so I don’t want to take her in just because I pity her but I will apply as her guardian instead. That way, once she grows old and she now understands her circumstances and she does not like to treat me as her mother, then she will not have any problems leaving. Our only problem is how to hide the fact that she is a mermaid? Her tail is too inconspicuous to just hide."
"I see. I have a suggestion, Mother. A way that will help her transition to become a human without fully transforming into a real human and allowing her to return to a mermaid anytime she wants. But Mom has to help me as I am still incapable with this body of mine and things might have changed by then."
Elaina’s eyes lit up, if that is the case, then perhaps there is still hope for the mermaid to live normally.
