Chapter 349: Language Barrier

Chapter 349: Language Barrier

By the time Elaina arrived on the backyard, the others are already there, the witch, Julia, Curaj, and her two children accompanied by Zaza and Shardu.

"You arrived, Sis. The mermaid has finally awakened," Julia said as she makes way on the pond and the mermaid was revealed to her.

The mermaid seems confused on where she is. Considering that she was still a child and similar to the age of her twins, the mermaid is not sure what is happening. But one thing is certain. She is scared.

"She looks confused and scared. Probably because she is in a new environment. I would be confused too if I was in her position," the witch said.

"What are we going to do about her? We already asked her a few questions but it seems that she does not understand human language and it seems that her vocabulary of words is still nonexistent," Princess Margaux scratches her head.

"Pretty normal. Since humans and mermaids are said to age similarly, that must mean she is just the same age as our twins here. Unlike our twins here with one capable of speaking fluently and one that is still learning, hers have barely started," Julia said as she crouched and approach the kid. The mermaid kid quickly tried its best to go to a corner of the pool, scared by the stares of the strangers.

Elaina is still not sure what to do but then, Arthur who looks sad with the mermaid started to shout.

"GO AWAY!"

This shocked everyone and not sure what to do. Elaina tried to approach him when Adelaide stopped her.

"Mom, can you and everyone else move out for a bit? It seems that was what Arthur meant. It seems he understood what the mermaid is feeling. Please tell everyone to come back a bit later. We will talk to her for a bit."

Once Elaina understood the situation, Elaina smiled and pat the shoulders of her twins. "Alright. I am not the best in terms of this matter, so if you two wanted to do so, then go ahead. I will tell the others to keep our distance for the time being."

After saying that, Elaina explained it to the others and they soon understood what is happening. They then left and with Elaina’s final look at the two, she nodded at them before she also left, leaving behind the twins to handle the mermaid’s predicament.

...

...

...

Adelaide sighed in relief when her mother and the others left. It’s not like she didn’t want them to come by, its just that because of them suddenly swarming together, the mermaid is scared. They are not bad, but for the mermaid who is in a new environment, she will be totally overwhelmed and she will be fearing for her life.

Thankfully, Arthur who is still not too fluent in speaking spoke out and in turn, allowed Adelaide to explain it properly.

With the adults gone, she looked at the mermaid who is visibly calm now with the reduction of people around. The only problem that they are facing now is none other than the communication barrier. Adelaide knows various languages since back in her past life, she have to learn various languages to be able to communicate to various races and people who speak other languages. It was a very useful knowledge she has that seems to still work today. However, for the first time, she is stuck on something.

She has not encountered the language that the mermaid is currently speaking. She speaks...but it is unknown language that in her ears, it sounded gibberish. Even her brain that tries to auto translate the language properly couldn’t even translate it and make it something she can understand.

But then, it seems that she didn’t need to learn it. Her twin who is still not that good at speaking the normal language seems to understand her. The way he speaks at her even in his broken sentences, it was like he was responding to her words and not just blindly talking.

"Arthur, don’t tell me you can understand what she was saying?"

Arthur turned to look at her and nodded innocently.

"Really? How?" For Adelaide, she was not expecting this.

"I don’t know. Words...not that hard...me understand it well."

Adelaide scratches her head. Is it possible perhaps? She is not sure but she decided to speak using an elvish language. One that Arthur still have not learned about and one that she is very confident and fluent about.

"Can you understand my words then?" Adelaide asked but this time, in Elvish language. The ways she spoke it would sound gibberish to other people but for those who understands the language will not think that she was speaking an alien language.

And like what she was expecting, Arthur nods. "Yeah!"

She has suspicion on what was going on but Adelaide finally have an idea on what was Arthur doing and why he can understand what the mermaid was saying. She wasn’t certain just yet but she suspects that Arthur has the ability to translate foreign language and translate it to the main language that Arthur knows and uses the most. She heard of this ability before but it was considered pretty rare and even back in her past life, she only read records and various documents telling them about this ability and how someone who had this kind of ability will not have any troubles communicating with other people. They even said that even those who have this ability, if they are capable enough can also convert their regular language to the language of the people who is not able to understand their language. A true translator.

"What is she saying?" Adelaide asked.

"She says, scared, wanted to go home, and find mom. But mom is here just now?" Arthur looked behind where their mother left.

"She meant her mother, not our mother. And she was scared because of what happened earlier?"

Arthur shakes his head. "No. She said that bad people came, stabby stab daddy, and mother telling to run away."

Based on his broken words, Adelaide is slowly understanding what she was just saying to Arthur which he then began to translate and tell the full translation using his own words.

"Bad people came in...stabby stab means someone attacked and stab the mermaid’s father. As a result of the chaos, her mother pushed her to run away before the enemy will come and attack her as well. I see. I think I got a good idea on what is happening to her right now."

Adelaide then turn to Arthur and asked him. "Arthur, can she understand you?"

Arthur simply shook his head. It seems that Arthur is still not proficient in the auto-translation ability he had. If he still can’t convey his words to her in her own language, then that means his ability has yet to blossom and he only got the regular ability for now. But if he practices this ability more, it won’t take time for Arthur to actually master things.

With this in mind, she decided to tell her mother about this. She have heard good things about her mother and how she is quite open to anything. The only problem is that she is quite busy and her time with them is limited. Still, even with her time being limited with them, she still likes that she shows that she cares for her children. She doesn’t feel alienated at all when her mother comes. It’s not just because her mind is essentially an adult but because she still liked that even with her busy schedule, she finds the time to take care of her kids. Even if she is tired, she still makes sure that she gets enough bonding time with her kids even if it is short time.

And right now, since she has a good idea about this, Adelaide came up of a decision.

"Alright. I think I will have to tell my mother about this. As well as my secret as a reincarnator."

If she knows this, Elaina will surely understand. If she can fully accept her fast maturation, she will also understood why.

...

...

...

Elaina is still curious as to what the kids are currently talking with the mermaid when her daughter, Adelaide comes to her.

"Mom. Can we talk?"

Elaina smiles and pat her back. "Sure. Come here. Why you look so serious?"

Adelaide is still nervous but she nods and started talking. "Mom, I think it is time for you to know about my current secret. I planned to keep it hidden right now, but I think there was no point hiding it anyway."

"Secret?" Elaina frowned. She is also a bit surprised on how Adelaide talks like a regular adult.

"Yes. I have a very big secret. I don’t know if you will understand, but as you can see...I still remember my past life. Every single memory I have is present in my mind right now. I am what you might call a reincarnator."
