Chapter 316: Confusion

She might not have seen her sister for a year now, but that doesn’t mean her appearance will change immediately for her to not recognize her sister. So seeing her from the crowd was a sudden surprise...and in the middle of the execution of their parents no less.

The one who looked like her sister wears a hooded cloak, hiding a bit of her face, but Elaina can still see her face and she cannot be wrong on this one. That is her sister, no doubt about it.

Elaina felt the urge to shout and call her sister but she also realized that is not an ideal way to reveal herself in the crowd. So instead of calling her out, Elaina went herself and waded through the crowd and tried to reach her sister in the process.

The two sisters, Elaina and Selena might be sisters by blood but the two barely have any sort of sisterly bond from one another. In fact, for Elaina, it is more like she only has one sibling and that is Troy, her older brother. It might sound like some kind of petty sibling jealousy but Elaina just never felt the feeling that Selena is her sister. It was like she was just a random nobody who happened to be born from the same mother. She is more of a stranger to her than to Julia who is not even blood-related to her.

Selena is the main reason why she is no longer the empress and as to why her marriage with the Emperor has been broken so she is a bit apprehensive about meeting her right now due to the circumstances, Elaina decides to swallow all her pride and decides that she will confront her sister as to why she is here and why she is not doing anything to help out their parents escape the death penalty. After all, she is now the lover of his former husband and she holds most of her authority now. So why wasn’t that the main case?

She didn’t waste her time and tried to get close to the woman she saw. She might be wrong but she can’t afford to waste the opportunity of confronting her in case she is indeed her sister.

However, wading through the crowd proved to be harder than expected. The crowd is not so easy to navigate through and some are not even happy being touched by others and would yell as Elaina pushes through. She didn’t care if they get angry as long as she gets to where her sister was currently standing. However, as she got closer to her, the hooded figure of her sister started leaving and Elaina is starting to lose sight of her.

"W-wait!" Elaina tried her best to fight through the crowd and get closer to her sister...only to end up getting carried with the crowd, preventing her from getting close.

Despite Elaina’s efforts, she failed in the process and she couldn’t get close to the figure before she disappeared through the crowd. When Elaina managed to escape from the crowd, she no longer had any idea where that person was currently now. She disappears before she can even get close and loses sight of her in the process. Elaina managed to escape the crowd eventually but it was pointless after seeing her gone.

"Damn it!"

The execution wrapped without any fuss and the executed prisoners were confirmed by the coroner to be dead one by one. However, they didn’t remove their bodies and let them remain to make an example to the people that doing crimes might eventually result to that scene.

As for Elaina, she left the site after confirming the death of her parents. The secretary of the King even recognized her in the process and gave her the death certificates of the two who both died in the gallows. Despite her reluctancy to accept the death certificate, Elaina decided to accept it so that she can hand them to both Rakkan and Liliana. After all, since both of them are dead, Elaina does not need to care about them anymore.

The ride back home remained the same peaceful and mundane experience. However, Elaina is filled with confusion in her mind right now.

"Why is my sister here in Darcero Kingdom? Just what is her goal for being in here? Did she really just come to the kingdom to witness the execution of our parents? I don’t think she was that sadistic to openly watch the execution of our parents nor she have any deep hatred for her to do so. Ugh...I don’t understand anymore..."

There is also the possibility that Elaina just have gotten it all wrong and that woman she saw earlier was not even Selena at all but someone else who happened to have the same features as her. There are only a few possibilities but Elaina felt her head will ache further if she decided to continue thinking about it. She will discuss this matter with her brother once she got back home instead."

On the other hand, while Elaina has returned home, the person that she was desperately trying to meet earlier just arrived at the inn that she was currently staying in. Removing the cloak she was wearing and putting it on the coat hanger, she sat down on her chair and chuckled.

"Two obstacles finally removed. How I hate them for being annoying pricks. They might be my parents but they are too useless and even when they are trying to be useful for once, they ended up with too many screwups. Hah...good riddance I guess. At least, once this is over, I will inherit their business in the process. Considering their huge property in the market, that will allow me to also control the market...that would work nicely for me to dominate the Luminiera Kingdom soon enough. If Alfred becomes useless, it will all depend on my work to ensure that things would do well."

Contrary to Elaina’s expectations, it seems she is indeed not able to understand Selena at all. Not only did she fail to know her reasons, she didn’t even have an idea that the deaths of their parents and the reasoning of their odd movements the past few weeks are due to the manipulation of Selena back when she begged for them to cause some chaos. It was her orders that made the two old couple to jump straight to their death, just to fulfill the orders that their youngest wanted.

Elaina might not know this in a very long time but perhaps in the future, Elaina might find her Sister the manipulator that ruined their family in the long run.

But even so, it seems that fate is still doing some work and it seems that not only Selena will be affected by this, but also Elaina who wouldn’t think much of the incident. Right now, things are just not looking great at the moment.

"Are you sure about what you have seen so far, Elaina?" Troy asked as he continued chewing on the bread that Elaina brought from the bakery like a child stuffing his face full.

"Ugh...brother. Chew the food properly before talking and don’t talk when your mouth is full. Do you want to risk yourself from choking? Anyways, I saw what I saw, Brother. And I might be wrong, but that face I saw is surely the face of Julia. It might be a year and a few weeks already since I last saw her, but I don’t think I got things wrong."

Troy scratches his head as he swallows what he is chewing before looking at her seriously. "Do you have any reason for her to be here? What about guards and whatnot? Considering that she is the new lover of the emperor, there is no way he would just leave out the future empress to remain unguarded without any guards or soldiers escorting her."

"It is possible that the guards are just not with her and they are just either waiting in the dark or they are just waiting outside the crowd!" Elaina insisted.

"Ah, whatever. Whether she is here or not is not our concern. Perhaps she visited now that the ban has been lifted and decided to check out on the execution. You know Selena, Elaina. She might be a bit devious at times but she isn’t this crafty."

Elaina shook her head in objection. "No way, brother. You don’t know how other people can convince others that they are what they show in the public. With how she can manipulate things, it seems that she might already have everything planned out to the very beginning!"

"It doesn’t matter now. You didn’t meet her right? Just drop it and instead focus on the situation. Still didn’t expect that those two would end up in the gallows eventually. With how many f*ck ups they did to our live, they are just now suffering from all of it."

Elaina signed. She pulls out the death certificate of the two for her to show it to Troy when something fell on the floor. A white envelope. And to the address on whom it will be sent off, it seems that it was from her deceased father.
