Chapter 315: Regrets

The execution grounds will be the capital’s city square, meaning it will take some time for Elaina to reach there. Although she is not really in the mood of wanting to see both of her parents again, she also doesn’t want to part ways with them permanently without making sure that those two will finally see the error in their ways now that they are on death’s door and even though she can guess the real truth, she still wanted to see one last time that her assumptions are wrong.

Thankfully for Elaina, the carriage that she took didn’t take too long to head out and it was a smooth ride after that. Elaina thought that once she went out from the farm, those people that are throwing random sabotage paraphernalia a few days ago would suddenly ambush her but it seems that wasn’t the main case.

Thanks to the speed of the carriage and the road being free from any traffic, Elaina managed to arrive at the location where the two would be executed. Sure, there are lots of people who deserve to have been hanged in this kind of place but compared to the number of innocent people who are hanged in replacement for the real people is something that even her do not like to know.

Even in the distance, Elaina can see the crowd gathering at the venue and even when she is still inside the carriage, she can still feel the pressure and the crowd’s feelings. The crowd seems to be in a tense mode.

When she arrived, there were plenty of people gathered around and even then, the crowd failed to cover the gallows that was now set up for the execution rites. This isn’t her first time seeing a gallows but it seems that she just hated how these things existed.

Despite the tense feeling she could feel from the people, it didn’t stop many of them from taking advantage of the situation and started selling various stuff that would boost their sales while the preparations for the execution were underway.

Elaina made sure to head into the position where she could properly see the execution rites without getting crowded or being obstructed from looking It wasn’t easy but she managed to squeeze through the crowd and arrive at the right spot.

Just as she was settling into her position, a small carriage arrived with an open carriage carrying people who were tied up with rope in their hands and had blindfolds on their eyes and were being gagged. Elaina didn’t expect that it won’t just be a special execution but more of a series of executions. No wonder the gallows have too many noose hanging, there were plenty of people that are going to be judged today. It’s not going to look pretty and everyone in the crowd knows it, based on the looks of their faces.

Looking over at the people who are going to be hanged today, Elaina can tell where her two parents were. After all, of all the prisoners that are going to be executed, the two are the only ones who are moving a lot and are making a lot of noise from the rest of them. Still, to her surprise, one of them remains the same, while the other seems to be begging for his life. Yes, the one who remained the same is Elaina’s mother, Maria, and the one who is begging, and seems to be crying is none other than her father, Victor. Despite being gagged, Elaina can tell that her mother is furious and seems to be ready to demand justice and stuff like that so that she will be removed from this state. Truly, someone who still fails to become a decent human being even on the face of the truth.

On the other hand, her father seems to be in deep repentance and is crying. It seems that he has realized everything and is now crying, deeply regretting everything. Of course, it might also just be crocodile tears and he is acting but whether he is truly repentant or just acting doesn’t matter. His actions cannot be forgiven. He repented too late and now he is reaping what he sowed.

Soon, the people that will be judged are now walking up to the stairs of the gallows and are now being set up to the nooses one by one. They have guards watching over them to ensure that they will not be able to run away or anything. Even if one tries to run, guns will soon take them down and incapacitate them before they will be forcedfully dragged back to the gallows. Why Elaina knows all of this? Because it works the same way back in Luminiera Kingdom where executions are more common compared to Darcero Kingdom that seems to be just doing executions for people who have committed severe crimes.

A guard faces the crowd and pulls out a scroll who then began reading its contents for the people to hear.

"To all our valued citizens, this execution process is being held out after a few decades of no executions done, keeping our cities and towns safe from any problems. But lately, it seems there are people who are taking advantage of the peace and wanted to ensure that they are going to be sowing chaos, problems, and even discord to the masses just to destroy the long-lasting peace we have made."

Hearing this, the crowd is riled up, some are purely shouting, some are shouting various expletive words while some are just riled up and are joining the others who are also hyped up by the speech.

"Today! Witness the criminals who disrupted the everyday peace of the kingdom, and the people responsible for the injuries, and chaos that people experienced these past few years. Although it is not our duty to judge people, we will be doing the work to send these sinners to the God of Judgement and let the gods decide their ultimate fate in the heavens."

"God of Judgement?" Elaina frowned.

The God of Farming who is also watching the situation unfold answered Elaina’s question. "Yes, that God actually existed. The only thing is that, unlike us minor gods, he is one of the gods with the most troublesome work and has been doing most of the work compared to us. Considering that the world constantly has an influx of people dying, the God of Judgement barely has time to take a good rest. After all, it is his duty to determine whether one’s soul is clean or tainted enough to be processed to the Hall of Reincarnation where one’s soul will either be converted to the tormented soul or will be in queue with the other people who will be reincarnated and given a new chance to live."

"That is a thing?" Elaina was surprised.

"Of course. It’s a lot troublesome to think of, but it didn’t really matter too much in the end, especially for us other gods. Thanks to these specific gods, they are doing their work with precise and diligent pace."

She only heard a snippet from the God of Farming but the idea of reincarnation is a bit sudden. So what will happen to her parents after they die, will they be converted into a tormented soul, or will they be in the process for reincarnation? It all depends and honestly, Elaina didn’t want to know much and would rather cut ties with them for good.

While Elaina is speaking with the God of Farming, the speech talking is already concluded which is followed by a loud cheer from the people, raising their hands as the criminals are now stepping into the closed trapdoors that will open to fulfill the executions.

Looking at her mother, she can only sigh while looking at her mother who still seemed to not understand everything and is still struggling despite the blindfold in her eyes still covering her eyesight from the things happening. On the other hand, her father is already shaking in his knees and is afraid of what will be coming for him.

And the guard who was speaking earlier went to the lever near him and stand next to it. He grabbed the handle of it and bowed down, alongside with him, pulling the lever down and opening the trapdoors, causing the people standing on them to plummet and fall, which then helped their nooses to tighten up the hold on their necks. A deafening silence took over as the people on the gallows struggled as they tried their best to shake themselves off from the noose only for the noose to tighten further.

It didn’t take long for them to halt moving, and the people who were once alive earlier has ceased to breathe and that include Elaina’s parents.

Just as Elaina thought everything was over, a person caught Elaina’s eyes for a bit before they disappeared amongst the crowd. She couldn’t be wrong considering people who have blonde hair like her are only a few people, it was none other than her sister, Selena.
